In this video, I dive into James Cameron's recent comments about 4K Blu-ray reviewers and his rather blunt suggestion that they need to "move out of their mom's basement".

You can watch Netflix on a quite large 4K smartphone and have a 1000 times better experience than what I had back in the day. I had to watch movies on crappy cable over a 15 inch 4:3 CRT TV. The image was blurry. The movie transfer was horrible. You had to sit through commercials and the runtime was different because movies had to be altered for time, and content like nudity and violence.

Here is a thought. When directors remake or restore their movies, do both. Sometimes fans want what they want. They remember want we originally saw (yes George looking at you). Its ok to tinker and make improvements especially as technology gets better. Give us both. I remember when I got both the original unaltered versions of the OT and the special editions on DVD. It was a win-win for everybody. Why can't that happen with 4K? PS: This can apply to director cuts and special editions or extended versions too.

I think your take that we should calm down about things like grain structure is the wrong way of looking at this. What's the point of making something on 4K if not for the minute details that can't be seen on a 1080p disc? What's even the point of the format if not for enthusiast nerds who like staring at pixels? If creators want us to pay 4K prices, they need to give us a 4K experience, and the fact of the matter is that these releases from Cameron are lazy AI-upscales of what seems to be the Blu-Rays.

It’s way more about color consistency and HDR for me than pixels and minute details. That’s the real benefit. It’s very hard to tell the difference between a 4K scan on a Blu-ray Disc and a 4K disc if neither had HDR.

I agree. When I purchase a 4k, throw it on, and see a mess visually, but in 4k: I wonder what the point of the purchase is ? Menus? More clear subtitles? Keep in mind: I can probably stream in ultra HD for either free or cheaply. A purchase should be superior.

I always liked how Cameron's early films always seemed well grounded in his background as a working class joe (a truck driver I think?) Remember the details of the cheap burger joint and robot car factory in The Terminator? Or the forklift work in Aliens? Or the mining folk having a singalong in Abyss? I find I miss grounded details like that in modern sci fi movies - including Cameron's own.

Just Jimmy Cams being Jimmy Cams. They’re his movies and he’s entitled to make them look however he wants them to look, but we are also entitled to criticise those decisions in a fair and nuanced way. That said, I’m dreading the upcoming 4K of The Terminator. Given that it’s a grungy, gritty action thriller set in the dankest parts of LA, you really need a good amount of grain on that sucker.

The color temperature and lighting are completely changed in the aliens 4k. So he's entitled to just undo other people's work on the movie 30 years after the fact? Why because he was there when the movie was made? So was the dude who did the lighting but screw him I guess? The funny thing is if James retain all the grains or most of the grains, there are people who will say he did nothing. Do not buy the release. It is hard to please everyone. He is the director of the movie, he gets the say. If he refused to do anymore remaster in future because of this incident, there will be people complaining him again.

what baffles me the most is that JC isn't seeing what we're all seeing. i mean, i don't HATE the releases, i'm super happy to finally have those movies on blu-ray and 4k. but the problems are there, that's a fact. and they would have been so easy to avoid or at least reduce. i use AI upscalers and image enhancers on video almost every day. and the solution to making it look good is extremely simple. you don't spend a lot of time finding the right AI settings. you just run the video through a program like Topaz to get it really clean (with a definite AI look), and then you simply mix the result with the original. usually 50/50 does the trick, sometimes you take the percentage of the AI-processed video a little higher or a little lower. that way you bring back some of the grain/noise of the original, but you also keep some of the AI enhancement. maybe someone should tell JC about this simple yet effective method 😁

I'm a huge fan of film grain. I remember when I was much younger discovering it in the bridge scene in Temple of Doom when I was watching it on DVD and wondered what it was. That was my very first encounter with it and I thought it looked so nice and majestic. I have been a fan of it ever since. I get very frustrated with the use of DNR and now being a video editor myself, steer well and truely clear of the setting in Resolve. It just simply should not be used under any circumstance when shooting on film.

True Lies surely takes the cake now, though. Also, there was supposed to be a remaster for T2 coming soon, but hearing that, I lost a lot of hope.. :/ Still hope there will be some studio who goes back in the pipeline and gets rid/weakens the DNR and delivers from a proper native 4K 2D master as well (I very much doubt we got native 4K there, looks like a 2K upscale). The extended cut is still not remastered, so that's the reason I hope when working on that at some point, they'll go through the whole thing and hopefully improve upon what we got now.

@@mercatorjubio3804 What? While they may not be actual optical effects, the CGI work was composited onto film and they have done a 4K scan of the 35mm film (negative?). It wasn't just a 2K DI upscale. That said, the UHD BD surely looks like upscaled 2K, but I think it's because sth. went wrong and they used a 2K master for 3D. There is more detail though, despite the DNR, and they _have_ done a new scan..

Cameron absolutely did not "approve" a 4K. He approved a 3D theatrical re-release. Hence all the CGI touchups to a 2K DI. Now from there Lightstorm gave Studio Canal a 4K package upscaled. Lightstorm creative dept. is responsible more than Cameron for that who only approved work done for a theatrical presentation. And for that to be delivered to home video

🙄 This guy is selling 4K blue rays, and the only people who buy these things-at a premium, mind you-are folks that really care about image quality. The whole point of upgrading to 4K is to achieve a superior image quality. So to act like people should stop complaining about that is insane. It’s a visual art form. It's simple, Cameron isn't a film restoration expert, he's a director first and foremost. While I would generally love for the OG director to work on getting these films restored, maybe they are not the best judge of what to and what not to correct in the restoration process.

While collectors can be too critical about grain scrubbing, Cameron's recent 4K releases are a whole other issue with their AI upscaling and grain removal. With some releases we are too touchy about this topic but the True Lies release especially deserves to get publicly trashed. Cameron's recent "restorations" are not the right direction for the medium.

Cameron said people were stupid for getting upset that he basically wiped out grain. Cameron either doesnt realise or doesnt care that people are generally way more upset that he used AI to add fake details, fake HDR, and people look more like synthetic beings than humans. Im not insulted or surprised by his attitude. He seems like a deeply unpleasant person to deal with. Thankfully there are HD versions of these movies still available. Cameron can now return to the sea to continue ripping off Ferngully the Last Rainforest. Ill keep enjoying his older movies, made in collaboration with thousands of artists, and mastered so everything looks theatrical rather than a high frame rate video game.

There is _no_ standard Blu-ray for The Abyss available, but then again, from what I've seen, that one looks pretty good. And while there is _some_ HD version available for True Lies, it's a bootleg and a spanish one at that, which might be hard or expensive to get (haven't personally checked). So it isn't easy to just ignore these releases..

James Cameron IS close-minded. Most of his movies are conflated, boring, re-used tropes that offer nothing new to cinema. T1 & T2 should have been his inspired movies and faded into the background. What a rube.

All I wanted was a Blu-Ray of The Abbys. I don't even have a 4K set-up and I don't care too much about film grain or whatever else people talk about, I just want one of my favorite movies looking better than a 20 year old non anamorphic DVD, and I got that, even if I had to pay the 4K price to get the Blu-Ray.

If you watch Titanic James Cameron was extremely biased against English characters. Irish, Scottish, American and whoever were superior in every way, it was really appalling.

I think people who praise 4K so highly are actually delusional and I don’t mean to say that to be mean but I’ve said this quite a few times most Blu-ray discs look better than 4K. The 2K medium is the best we’ve had. Quentin Tarantino said he even hates high definition. He prefers VHS, there are some transfers as said before that look better than Blu-ray by quite a bit grease is one of them I would say Blade Runner is another one 2001 a space Odyssey maybe Sicario but some people are so in love with the idea. 4K is this profound amazingtransfer when it’s not and actually a lot of 4K transfers look terrible and I won’t even go into detail, but everybody has a different lens that they film with and that’s completely fine. Blu-ray has been the sweet spot.

My brother was a model maker on Titanic and had minimal interaction with Cameron, but if I ask him about his experience the only thing he will say/remember is that Cameron was an $%^(&@. lol

Jimmy CAMMY'S Arrogance that anytime he's cornered by an about face on film quality and preservation of films of the 1980s and 90s.We as fans wanted an enhanced version of these films as they are not a film that was made yesterday 50 years ago.I do understand film grain but by scrubbing from the film does remove the ambiance of the time period. Jimmy Cammy spent years talking about preservation of films then to use a Technology that does help when used correctly but when used incorrectly can alter a film that most have watched an original version for 50 years so we as fans are biased. I get the Blu-ray or dvd Bootleg. But this disdain started with Rian Johnson With The Last Jedi blaming Fans 🙄. Since these Billionaires don't truly interact with the average person and it's gotten worse. The current environment raises the dangers of the person claiming to solve everybody's problems by excluding others. The Terminator 4k is being supervised by Cameron. I noticed one comment on Cameron's statement was from an island country that has no basements 😅😂 I think Cameron acctual lost a friend who was apart of his crew and the Question was to close to the nerve. I still enjoy any version of Star Wars as a movie and I mostly agree with you on everything you said in this video, but saying the changes to the Star Wars Trilogy are "minor" hurt my soul. I get it's the same movie, but some of those changes are huge.

I just movies from the 80s and 90s to look and sound like it. Revisionist transfers that make giant changes to color grading, editing, sound design, and beyond in the interest of making them feel more “modern” just do nothing for me. Movies are a time-capsule of their respective era and when it doesn’t properly represent that technical limitations and quirks of it’s time I’m just taken out of it.

No one in this world has the right to be an asshole! No matter how wealthy or successful you are, you will never have that right! There should be a level of respect between people, and if you don’t understand that, you’re simply weak minded and not raised properly. On the other hand, James Cameron has all the right to do whatever he desires with his movies, but that doesn’t excuses him from lacking respect for his fans that were responsible for his success. Cameron only knows what DNR is. Most of his movies are overlt DNR'd to death which shows alot of film grain. And his movies are overrated. Avatar was CGI ferngully. Only movie he did I liked was terminator and terminator 2. Otherwise everything else Cameron has done it is just meh to ok for me.

This is sad because the recent 4K AI releases actually damaged these historically important and beloved films with serious artifacts. They could’ve just rescanned them with new color correction and that would’ve been enough

I agree that James Cameron has overreacted if he was talking about his average super-fan. But the problem is that most of the people who stand out, and probably the ones he has noticed as well, are much more arrogant and close-minded than he is. How many have accused him of selling out because he got rid of most of the grain in his movies? They can't accept that he disagrees with them. How are they super-fans of his? They are only super-fans of themselves who can't understand that stuff like that is subjective. And if I had been badgered by those kinds of people for years, I would probably react in a similar fashion. Actually, sometimes I have although they weren't talking about my movies. And I can't help but agree with him that people who are fascist about something trivial like film grain really do need a real life with real problems.

He’s overrated. T2 had that horrible kid actor and those cringe scenes where he taught the terminator how to not kill, Aliens had those clowns as marines (wtf was he thinking) and too much with the little girl, Avatars sucked. Titanic was 2 hours too long. If he’s a prick besides… His only decent films were Terminator and Abyss and I’d have to see Abyss again to confirm

Obviously, he has a very big ego, everyone should be able to except constructive criticism without it. We can’t improve. The thing is that he’s probably not understanding that some of his fans would like to see his movies the best way they possibly can. He as the Director should understand that and if want his fans to experience his movies, the best way possible. He needs to understand without his fans he wouldn’t be where he is in life and insulting a portion of his hands is not a good idea. (even if James is right, never insult the fans just say something like hey to me this looks the way I intended it to)
