Coltrane Sax Tribute improvised by James Carter at The Church Of The Advocate, in Philadelphia on the historic evening of John Coltrane’s 90 birthday, Friday, September 23rd, 2016.
This is a performance from a September 2016, six hour Saxophone Tribute to John Coltrane on the night of his birthday. This event was co-produced and hosted by J. Michael Harrison of WRTI radio. It was part of Coltrane At 90: Philadelphia Celebrates John Coltrane, a festival honoring John Coltrane's 90th birthday. The Philadelphia Jazz Project in collaboration with Temple University Libraries, WRTI, PhillyCAM, Jazz Near You and other partners celebrated John Coltrane's 90th Birthday with nine days of FREE events.
These events took place between September 17th to 25th, 2016.
The Saxophone Tribute featured solo, duo, trio, quartet and quintet performances by local, regional, national and international saxophonists, including artists like, Billy Harper, Odean Pope, Sonny Fortune, Greg Osby, Azar Lawrence and many more. There were over 900 people who attended this remarkable musical experience.
