Rosenman was a master composer. His scores for East of Eden and Rebel Without a Cause are masterpieces.

That's so sad that James Dean never had the kind of relationship with his father that he wanted and needed.

That is not true. Nowhere but that James Franco movie is that rumor ever been found. If you watch the end credits there is a disclaimer to the truthfulness of the movie. The director even says its a movie, not a true story.

@@RgTripleC absolutely right. I have read many factual James Dean biographies and they all concur that the issue between Dean's parents was that his Mother became pregnant not long after they met. Winton Dean did the honorable thing for the times (1930's) and they married. Both were too young for marriage, let alone parenthood. It's well documented that the marriage was strained and troubled due to these issues. But, Winton Dean never doubted his son's paternity.

Boo hoo. Most people don't have a relationship with their fathers. In some cases it's better off that way. Bunch of dead beat dad's out there who only know how to stick their dicks in holes but can't actually provide for their offspring

Yep, i have heard Dennis Hopper say that in more than one interview. But, he did go there after Dean died. My personal opinion is that Dean 's death is when Dennis Hopper started to go into his alcohol and drug phase. He said " I lost my teacher" He idolized Dean and his death was very traumatic for him. I read a great book "GIANT " by Don Graham. It came out last year. About the making of the film. One quote was, "James Dean wanted to be a Texan for the entire making of the film. Dennis Hopper wanted to be James Dean for the rest of his life. "

Jimmy desperately needed a father figure in his life, or at least some kind of emotional intimacy with other men. Just like he was looking for maternal qualities in females... He would get love and affection wherever he could find it. Most of his relationships were not driven by sexuality, but the constant need of emotional fulfillment.

He meant what he said. Not only is he inconsiderate that James Dean is so young he is also ignorant conscerning the needs of others. He grew up priviledged and his world is all about number one. His story about their parting company he conveniently leaves out that he assumed Dean struck up the friendship for sexual reasons and when James Dean refusedhe went beziek!! Dennis Hopper claimed in a interview that he so much as admitted that after James Dean was killed.

I find Leonard Rosenman very offensive and insulting to James Dean. He fails to mention that if it weren't for Dean introducing him to Elia Kazan and Nicholas Ray, and Dean convincing them to hire him to write music for East of Eden And Rebel without a Cause, Rosenman would not have had a career in Hollywood. An acknowledgment and a Thank You would've been nice, Leonard.

I've heard this view as well from other friends of MR Dean. It was said that he did a lot for MR Rosenman's career at the time introducing him to the right people and so on. It seems that MR Rosenman's rejection of MR Dean was not looked on favorably in certain circles. There are two sides to everything of course. It could be that MR Rosenman just couldn't handle being MR Dean's friend in that way. This was interesting to hear that MR Dean had a deformed joint on his fingers preventing him to play piano as he would've liked. Maybe the result of an old sport's injury? I did hear that he had hurt his hand badly when punching the desk at the police station in Rebel without a cause but from the interview I would gather that the piano lessons were while they were in New York, not in Hollywood.

During the 70's when this interview was done , Peter Lawford's drinking and drug use was escalating . He had been shunned by the Kennedys , Sinatra , and most of the Rat Pack . In fact his career had really deteriorated by then .

Let’s hear all the hate, all the “bad” ,supposedly done by Dean... but I’ll tell you this, over 50 years later we are still enchanted, enthralled, mesmerized by Deans tremendous acting ability, how he could turn in every performance into a masterpiece.... no other actor at the time , possibly Marlon Brando came close to what Dean could do on the movie screen , that “magic” he brought to every role (only 3) , no , Deans star shined so brightly in the heavens for some unknown reason , destiny, stars in the incorrect alignment, say what you will but the genius of James Dean will never fade , his iconic performances will never ever fade, not in this lifetime. We are so very lucky to have the 3 movies he did make to remind us of that huge talent, the greatness , that brilliant star in the heavens that shined so brilliantly , known as James Dean.
