I loved this interview, very positive and mellow, and lots of little interesting anecdotal bits, like James revealing his piano's name, how his ankles are like yorkshire puddings, how Nicky has nice legs, and bombarding his family's aural patience while learning (or rather, furthering) piano. I love listening to this man, he has a rich, warm voice, and when in his element, has a natural storyteller's cadence. I'm also enjoying The Ultra Vivid Lament, and I hope the new touring goes well!

TUVL is most definitely a 'grower': first listen didn't do it for me but I'm glad I stuck around - the melodies are intricate, playful, polished and very moody. Manics are pulling out all the punches and subtly express their 3 decades in music with this album. I really appreciate how they do not make the music nor the melodies easy for their listeners: this is sophisticated music, for sophisticated listeners. Where you expect a simple transition, or a Western scale, or classic turn arounds, there is none: this is an album made of music to question, to explore, to redefine, to provoke, albeit in an understated way. Moreover, it is a stunningly beautiful statement about loss, grievance, regret, and perhaps even hope. A beautiful record, not overly concerned with breaking the charts, but rather in delighting those with a taste for the fine craft of music. As for JDB: this man is impossibly legendary. I would have exchanged both my limbs to have him as an uncle! I'd settle for a pint or two but alas, he's most likely holed up in a dinghy flat crafting the next masterpiece. Legend.

One of my favourite bands since 1992. So moving in every way- the music, lyrics, defiance, anger, wisdom, longevity, optimism, despair and unyielding humanity in all their work. I listen to a wide range of music and can think of few bands who have maintained such high standards for so long. Always interesting and inspiring to listen to them being interviewed too. The Manics are a reminder that there can be hope in a bleak world. The fact they formed in response to the anger they felt at the defeat of the miners' strike says everything about their integrity. Anthem For A Lost Cause is a beautiful and heart breaking tribute to the cause.

Didn’t Tony Blair try to appeal to the masses from the centre and the manics did not like that either🧐 . What he says makes sense though to gain power in order to make changes

The most commercial stuff you've written. Pretty awful. A bit Elvis Costello and The Attractions here and there. Sort of Armed Forces mostly. Probably listened to Oliver's Army aged 10 lads. In Dorothy or West End Cafe. (Yes I used to live in Blackwood William Street a long time ago. Just a touch older than you. Used to see Richey sitting on the bridge watching fish near the Rock and Fountain aged about 14.) Abba probs listened to your families stuff. Worse still? Abba. But Why? Solo album was fab. This time. Nicky's lyrics are pretty predictable. He's not run dry but he's just repeating stuff he's done before. You hinted you probably won't write like it again. P!ease don't.

@Steffan Hoffmann Oh come on - this band has been running on empty since at least the late 1990's - how the fuck does ANYONE rate their constant run of underachieving albums is beyond me !

@Two Of Substance They’re just another couple of idiots who think every album should be like The Holy Bible
@steffanhoffmann89373 жыл бұрын
@Two Of Substance Fixed agenda? Read it again please. Properly. The latest stuff is commercial Papp. It's bereft of originality. It wreaks of a band that's run out of ideas. Repeating old hat. Lyrically copying it's history. FYI I like them without Richie ....when that was then. However to say they evolved or whatever into their true sound not only insults The Holy Bible....basically his work; but it also shows a lack of empathy. What about Motor Cycle Emptiness? Is that before they're true sound or what? It's probably one of their most popular songs. Futurology was quite good I concede. The last album which was so good 🤫 I can't even remember it's name. Was not. Was that they're evolved sound also? The night before Richie walked out on JDB he played him a song which right now escapes me. JDB said it was a new direction which Richie comically said sounded like The Girl From Ipanema. That tells you something surely? Nos Da.

Terrible album. Didn't like any songs on it.
@beehivecluster74963 жыл бұрын
Seems to have gone down pretty well with most hardcore fans. It’s certainly a “pop” album though, so if a person is only into heavier JFPL type guitar sound or straight ahead rock sound I guess it wouldn’t go down well. Early days, but I’d tentatively put it among the top half of their albums.

You need to work out the difference between you not liking an album and it being terrible. Nothing wrong with not liking something but to say all that musicality of the UVL is terrible is idiotic, maybe you should have bought The Steps record instead.
