Only James Earl Jones could masterfully nail such a powerful statement on the human condition and how evil and destructive we can be. I agree! James Earl Jones nailed it here... but the monologue could've done expounded upon. Here's my expansion on it. Ommadon: You know, Carolinus... I have weapons at my disposal. Weapons which you would not even dare to use. For you see, it is not logic, ethics, and kindness that lead a man onwards. It is not science and curiosity that guide his actions. Instead, it is fear that rules man. It is terror that grips and governs his beating heart. It is this same fear that I'll use to destroy man. By summoning all the dark powers that I command, I shall infest the spirit of man with a fear so great that he'll use his science and logic to destroy himself. Can you imagine the chaos and havoc I can create? I'll turn brother against brother so that all the enemies he sees will be in his own household! I'll have it so that greed and avarice prevails in the minds of men, so that they'll even praise greed itself, and those who fail to hear and heed my words will pay the price forever. I'll teach man how to use his machines to their fullest potential. Slowly but surely, I'll teach him what damage and terror distorted science can give birth to so that he grows to fear the very tool he so happily studies. I'll teach him how to fly like the faeries and birds that he envies. And I'll give him the ultimate answers to every question his science could ever ask... and the world will be free for my magic to rule again!

You see, the other wizards made a critical error. At the end of it all, they chose not to destroy the Red Crown, as it was a part of the very fabric of magic, and they thought it harmless without Omadon. What they failed to realize, is that during this speech, Omadon poured his dark determination into the Red Crown, such that even after its master’s demise, the Red Crown continued to influence man towards self destruction. A few scenes in the movie even hint at this being the case. Now, does that mean defeating Omadon was pointless? No. The Red Crown is powerful and dangerous, but it’s not self-aware, and so it just guides humanity towards a vague doom, rather than a specific one. If Omadon had survived, humanity wouldn’t have made it past WW1.

Looking back at this 30 years later, it's a remarkably fine, literate script. The central concepts are very well expressed, the acting is excellent and even the Rankin/ Bass animation, though a little stiff, is based on elegant conceptual art and good very good today. Plus the story is melancholy, and has many fine high-fantasy themes and sequences that are far superior to nearest contemporary movie, which I suppose was Disney's 'Black Cauldron'
