This is really magnificent. I had never found a version of the Bach works for solo violin that I felt I could really live with . . . until now. For my taste, he seems to strike an ideal balance of playing expressively, with deep feeling, without falling into an overly romantic, or overly dramatic, interpretation. Needless to say, these works present tremendous challenges for a violinist . . . which James Ehnes has completely mastered. His playing strikes me as "just right." I just discovered him through an interview on the Canadian program, "Q", with Tom Powers. Powers asked Ehnes about how he approaches any work he intends to play; Ehnes said above all he tries to appreciate the genius of the composer, and as much as possible, to get inside of the composer's intention. This is probably a very presumptuous statement on my part, but it seems to me that James Ehnes very deeply appreciates, understands, and conveys the profound spirit of Bach's music -- not to mention the great beauty.
