Initially, how could the studio heads have envisioned Marlon Brando in the role of Murphy ultimately played by Jim Garner? Brando was a supremely talented actor, however, by the mid 80s he was morbidly overweight and essentially disinterested in any serious acting assignments. Moreover, there wouldn't have been any chemistry with Sally Field. Garner , with his Oklahoma roots, was perfect for the role. Ritt, his director, had done The Long Hot Summer, Hud and Hombre with Paul Newman and Norma Rae with one of Field's Oscar winning performances.
