I’m glad he can finally, fully open up about how crappy of an experience JL 2017 was for him and everyone, I’m sure that really soured him on the idea of being heavily-involved with superhero movies full-time. Affleck may have said he doesn’t want to direct a movie for Gunn’s DCU, remember that he also ended up not directing a movie for the old DCEU too, despite being in talks to. I think that based on that, it seems more like he doesn’t want to get stuck directing a big superhero movie again, and instead focus on directing smaller films. He was trying to work on/promote “Live By Night” in 2015-2016, and “The Way Back” in 2019-2020, but all anyone could ask him about was when he would start directing his Batman. I don’t blame him, but I don’t think it’s about James Gunn. I’m excited to see what else he chooses to work on!

I think it’s pretty clear that he just didn’t want to get heavily involved with being Batman again after Josstice League. Cameoing in Aquaman, filming one extra scene for ZSJL, and having 5-minutes of screentime in The Flash are easier asks than dedicating years of your career to directing a whole movie (of which he already stepped down once during the Old DCEU regime). He might’ve seemed/been interested during conversations, and he might’ve changed/made up his mind, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Gunn lied about it. Idk, we’ll have to hear Gunn’s response to better gauge all this, it is still weird.

Considering James is VERY active on Twitter and responding to fans and debunking shit and talking about other shit to an extent (as to not spoil anything), I doubt he lied. That would not be a good look right now. I have full confidence they met, however, I do think James maybe exaggerated and misunderstood Ben's intentions. I think Ben was curious and interested, but I don't think he necessarily WANTED to direct. Gunn lied. Ben and Matt have been exclusively launching their new production company since 2019. Air will be their first featured film. He talked about not wanting to leave home. Since this is precious time with his children growing up. I think Ben been closed the door to directing in the DCU. Jim's tweet was last year. Highly doubt Ben had a meeting with Gunn. He was so in grossed in directing, writing, starring and being the CEO of the new production company. Plus his private life was massively changing last year. Ben's plate was too full. I don't think Gunn was lying but still, it's a bad look overall but for WBD, what else is new? At this point it would be a shock if we went a full month without some type of drama with DCU/WBD. Being a DC fan is like rooting for a sports team with great players but bad coaching/management & every season we're hoping this is the season where the organization gets itself together and starts winning some games.

Honestly the more I look at it, maybe he(Gunn) just meant that Affleck is more interested in directing at this point in general than acting, and they wanted to get him to do a project? I mean he is an oscar winner. Maybe I'm missing a huge point, but how exactly would he know "how they're doing it" if he hadn't had a meeting with them to discuss? I dunno seems like not a big deal. He may've been interested assuming it was how things were, saw that some things had changed, and passed.

I feel like there's a lot missing from Ben's quote. I read that it basically boils down to Ben having limited time, he doesn't want to waste it being miserable and uncomfortable in costume against a greenscreen. I feel like he was implying that if the studio took a more practical approach to filming he would be on board. But he's tired of standing against greenscreen all day and it isn't creatively satisfying.

Maybe James Gunn meant that Ben Affleck wants focus more on directing regardless if it’s for DCU or not (ex. the Air movie) and claims we know he wants to direct more and we want him to direct for us at DC.

Seeing how Gunn spoke about his vision of Batman being a franchise that drip feeds the audience new members of The Bat Family in every single film and Damien being involved meaning a focus on The League Of Shadows, Ra’s and Talia I can maybe see Ben seeing that and thinking “no, I don’t want my Batman or a Batman movie I direct to be about that”

Affleck was never going to direct a DC film period. Lol n anyone thinking this dude was just going to direct I mean you were just fooling yourself!!! Gunn is simply doing damage control for his future movies. I really feel for Gunn everyone's on his ass cleaning up this mess. Going back to Batfleck, he would be Batman if DC wanted him too regardless him saying that hes tired of playing the character I mean is he not in the Flash movie and we all know there was a cameo he did for Aquaman but since the decision of changing actors no reason for Ben to stick around. So to tell the Batman to just direct a movie and not have a role in that movie that's even more ridiculous. I just think everyone just needs to calm their tits and judge Gunn on his future DC projects. Cux the movie industry is constantly changing and its just gonna be more of a headache if you're expecting Gunn to keep his word on everything he says which really he can't promise.
