Whether it's murder or sexual assault, it's not the victim's fault.

No, victims do not get blamed for their crimes. Those questions are asked to DETERMINE if the person is in fact a victim. Questions accusers are asked are meant to determine if the crime actually happened. When it comes to some crimes, usually those against women and minorities, the accused to assumed to be guilty.

Officers should be asking those questions then, not other civilians. Because then it becomes victim blaming.

@@tjazzmcneil5514 so, in which sense does asking about what a person was wearing or if s/he had alcohol can help to determine if a sexual assault happened? I can tell you from my own experience that what I wear and how much I drink has ZERO correlation with sexual assault. There have been assaults when I was completely sober and dressed 'unsexy'- there have been assaults when I was dressed sexy and not sober, there have been no assaults, when I was drunk and half naked and there have been no assaults when I was sober and dressed like a nun. and by the way: Even the place (club, open street, at home) has no statistical effect- it happened everywhere- and it also didn't happen at the very same places. the only factor for being assaulted is, if the person involved wants to assault the other or not. period. full stop.

People tend to stand by the strong who don't need support and at the same time bring down those that are already fragile. Most of us don't like identifying as a (possible) victim, and "blaming the victim" allows us to trick ourselves into believing that we are strong and that we would never become a "victim". It's an attempt at trying to preserve one's ego.

The message is correct. There is no justification for offenses, however, I believe the reason people start justifying things like this is purely for themselves. They are confused and scarred of how such a thing could happen to someone they know, and they start analyzing the behavior of the victim and trying to compare themselves to the victim to sort of judge their own risk level.

You take it for granted that murder victims are never blamed in this way. Sadly, this is not the case. I've seen cases (luckily for me, only in the press, not with anybody I knew personally) where the murder victim's behavior was questioned in an attempt to mitigate the murderer's guilt -- and not just by the murderer's family, friends and defense attorney. It might not happen as automatically as in rape and sexual assault cases, but it does happen.
@lauraw.7008

The defense team is ALWAYS going to try to push blame back on the victim, whether for rape, assault, murder, you name it.I get what they are going for. We are always trying to move towards a safer society. And parties ARE where a lot of sexual assaults take place, so to those saying it isn't realistic - I say in many situations it IS realistic. And - we perhaps we could be showing the Tea Consent videos to all 13 year olds and up.

I get that people shouldn't being blamed for rape because of the clothes they were wearing or that they weren't hyper conscious in an already seemingly safe area, but this video makes the assumption that murder victims have never been blamed for getting themselves killed in the first place. It happens all the time, and often understandably so. Say I decided to go on a solo trip to Mogadishu, no bodyguards or any kind of protection at all, and then within a few days I get kidnapped and murdered. Do you really think people aren't going to think I'm an idiot for being there in that position in the first place?

There are a lot of great things about this video, but they're great things for awful reasons ;D They're not 1:1 straight trades on situations because if the situation changes than all the contextual stuff has to change too. If 1 in 5 people got murdered, you can bet your sweet, vulnerable ass that a lot of people would take note and take precautions. Now, these precautions are really up to the individual (though, of course, a worried parent might warn you of the dangers of V-necks) and it's there that safety considerations should come first. And the thing about taking precautions is because, often, things are out of your control - you cannot necessarily trust things to go perfectly for you and this is especially true if you continually add more and more people to the equation. When you cannot necessarily trust everyone to "not murder" because it's wrong or awful or against the law, then you should, logically, consider taking some steps to prevent your own murder *if it is even a thing worth consideration*. A lot of this is a moot point as it really should be an internal consideration and hindsight is of no use to anyone being murdered and no decent person would think to throw these considerations in the face of someone that was murdered, or at the family of someone that was murdered and I've, personally, never heard of anyone actually bringing reprehensible points like this to bear. The amazing thing is, in this video about someone having been murdered and the subsequent discussion of his murder by two people, that the one relating the information to the questioner never, once, takes a stand against the inappropriate & horrible implications, insinuations and outright statements made to her/in her presence. Given the chance to do so, given the reason to do so, given every moral or emotional reason to shut the other person down and maybe even beat some sense into them... they refuse - instead letting the ignorance and heartlessness continue to pour out, end over end, over everything they say, over what they were originally trying to express. Do you know what? That's the only believable part about this entire video, really, that a presumably good person did nothing to correct the carelessly expressed ideas of a presumably bad, if not batshit crazy, person in a normal conversation.

This is actually a bad analogy. A good analogy would someone getting his house robbed while forgetting to lock the door, or someone going to Syria and tell ISIS Mohammed is a fucking pedophile prophet and Islam is total bullshit and then getting beheaded. Both the beheading of the guy in the 2nd hypothetical case and the robbing of a house is reprehensable. If you see a house with the door open it absolutely doesn't give you the right to go in and steal anything. Let me be absolutely clear about that. Yet if you leave your house, I would strongly recommend locking it up. Does that mean conceding the robbers are right, does that mean giving up my freedom to a bunch of thugs? The fact that I would recommend you to lock your house in no way implies that I would justify robbery in the case you didn't. See, this is the point. It's not about victim blaming. It's about warning people about reality, about the fact that society isn't perfect and the police only has a limited capacity. There are nasty people out there, and certain actions make it more likely nasty people will do nasty things to you.

What my assault counselor would say is that what is missed in this argument is that if '1 in 5' people were k***ed instead of raped, then they would do a better job with security. How absurd to just 'arm' people when you could have cameras placed in public places in universities and in doorways, make it a part of student living. Also, we would look at the source of narcissism, sociopathy, and entitlement and truly deal with it before these monsters come about. My counselor says ''the onus never is with the victim''. Also, I believe you are naive in thinking that there are foolproof ways to protect yourself unless you are fortunately healthy enough to become a body builder of some kind, and even then, you can't predict someone coming up to you with a drink with a drug to knock you out. Moreover it IS a death, it's a death of the spirit. If this happened to men with the same frequency, I can guarantee you there would be ample security measures taking place. This video IS on par, except the statistics do show in one's face that should this be murder (which may affect men and women proportionally) that more would be being done and these conversations wouldn't go on. It's entirely one on one. During every rape, I had a full length maxi skirt or pair of pants on. Also, this occurs daily outside of college campuses. There IS no way to prevent it aside from a force field. Wake up.

So I told him that he had every right to wear it wherever and whenever he wanted to. I made sure he knew not to feel he had to take any precautions in and around people and places that made him uncomfortable. People should neither ever feel that way nor let that change their decision making and behaviour. Acting cautiously suggests victim blaming afterall and as we know, avoiding accusations of having a hand in one's own demise is way more important than that person's welfare. #sarcasmisthehighestformoftakingthepiss

Laudable as this message may be, it's only valid if you accept that rape is equally severe as murder. Are they both serious offenses? No doubt. But are the instruments (male reproductive organ vs. knife) the same, or are the consequences equivalent? Definitely not. The central question with rape is CONSENT, which is never an issue with murder. People have sex all the time, the only difference with rape is the crossing of that line of consent. People don't randomly stab each other at parties. To be clear, I don't condone rape, but I just can't stand it when people blur the discussion with bad arguments. I'm sorry, but this video makes a bad argument.

Once again, the video misses the mark. It's changing the crime to murder in an attempt to make their point but the rest of the scenario needs to change too in order to make it realistic. James was murdered last night. What? How? He got drunk, left his friends, and went to an ATM in the middle of the night in a bad part of town. He was walking down the middle of the street counting his money when he was robbed and killed. And everyone said "What an idiot!" Did James ask for it? Nope. Did he deserve it? Nope. Did he break any laws? Nope. He has every right to do what he did and wasn't hurting anyone. But can we all agree that his bad choices led to his death? Yes, surely we can.Women, it's not your "fault" if you are raped or assaulted. But you can make a lot of decisions that go a long way to prevent such things from happening. Know the people around you. If you're going to drink, have a sober friend nearby to keep an eye on you. etc. etc.

I have a question for you. A honest question. So I’m assuming that you have let’s say an average of 10 dollars at least with you at all times. Say I ask you for ten dollars. Assume I am a very close friend of yours, and we have lent each other money at times in the past. For whatever reason (important- this reason does not matter) you decide you do not want to give me ten dollars. I get angry, asking you why you don’t want to give me ten dollars? You gave me ten dollars last week, why won’t you give me ten dollars now? You gave somebody else ten dollars, why not me? I’ve been nice to you lately, I deserve ten dollars, don’t you think? A few days later, you wake up to see I have taken ten dollars from you. You ask me why I took ten dollars from you when you were sleeping. I tell you that you didn’t tell me no, so I took it. ( keep in mind, you didn’t say no because you were asleep) Picture a different scenario. Once again, I am a close friend of yours. This time, we go out with a mutual friend group to say, a bar, on a Friday night. Two friends casually hanging out. Stuff starts getting crazy, and in the morning you see I have once again taken ten dollars from you. You have little memory of the incident, but you still know I took the ten dollars, and some other friends saw me take it too, but didn’t stop me because they thought it was none of their business. You report the theft, and are instantly questioned by officials. You don’t remember me taking ten dollars forcefully, how do you not know you gave it to me and then forgot? There isn’t any proof I was the one who took the ten dollars. And you have a history of giving people ten dollars anyway, so when you do that you’re kind of asking other people to take ten dollars from you too. And also, even if I did take ten dollars, I was drunk! It’s the alcohol, not me. I’m a really nice guy, do I really deserve to get charged with something as strong as theft? Now think about how dumb that all sounds. Really puts it into perspective, huh. Grow up.

The video's mark is victim blaming and defending the perpetrator It's like psychology and sociology or sociopathy and psychopathy, similar but different topics

@@alisonk5451 That question is not relevant to the general question on whether it's wrong to point out that there are had choices that can lead to you getting hurt therefore you should be careful of making those choices.

I don't think you can compare rape with murder since there are no legal activities that borders onto murder. Rape on the other hand is just sex (which is legal) without the consent of one of the participants. The border between rape and sex is really thin, it's nothing at all like murder.

Fair point but still, dying is not something you do regularly. I bet most people have sex far more often than they die.

And in a rape case you might never know if someone gave consent or not, a woman might as well lie about being raped to get back at an old boyfriend. It's a bit harder to fake your own murder since there is usually solid evidence in a murder case while in a rape case you have to rely almost entierly on the testimony of the alledged victim.

Yeah, it's nothing like murder! One has the victim scarred for life, the other has the victim dead. So you really have to weigh it, is living with trauma worse than dying after something painful and quick? And, wow, would you look at how many people try to commit suicide after being raped. Please stop being an ignorant fuckwad. Rape is traumatic and akin to torture, while sex is an enjoyable activity between two or more consenting parties. Why don't you go advocate for survivors of rape instead of trying to discredit them. It's not just women who get raped, you know.

That depends entirely on the severity of the rape, it sounds to me like you're talking about assault rape which is pretty uncommon. The most common rape scenario is being raped by someone you know when under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, this kind of rape is harder to separate from regular sex while assault rape is nothing like sex. So how alike regular sex and rape are varies from different situations but it can be hard to tell the two apart, meanwhile it's not very hard to tell life from death. I'm not trying to discredit rape victims (why do you call them survivors btw? It's not like you usually die while gettting raped.) I'm just saying that it can be hard to differantiate rape from sex in certain situations and that it's often word against word. P.S It's not rape a man and a woman at a party are both drunk and procede to have sexual intercourse but the next day she wakes up and realizes that she didn't want to have sex with the man eventhough she hadn't told him no or resisted. You can't just call rape whenever you had sex with someone and regretted it afterwards, take some responsibility for your actions.
