That‘s a specialty of Bob Lanese, who has played bent-up trumpets for most of his career. He‘s still active. But I don‘t know why exactly, maybe because it allowed him to look downwards more easily while still directing the sound upwards...

Probably because of his embouchure or the way he places is lips on the mouthpiece means that the trumpet would normally point downwards. The bend allows the sound to be projected out. That's my guess as someone who used to play in this manner.
