James made a great number of movies. He was always good. North by North West is a consummate performance. The Upturned Glass is a great vehicle for him too.

Wonderful stylish star with a distinct stylish voice. His most intense role is the prosecutor in THE TRIALS OF OSCAR WILDE. Most stylish beautiful film: THE SHOOTING PARTY. Biggest media-inflated disappointment: LOLITA 1962. Biggest mistake ever of ‘The Academy’ was in not giving Judy Garland the Oscar for A STAR IS BORN. And the worst ever decision not to film in colour fell on: JULIUS CAESAR. Strangely there are 3 glaring omissions from the list: SPRING AND PORT WINE 1970 with Susan George as a rebellious late teen. A PLACE OF ONES OWN 1945, a brilliantly atmospheric tale of the supernatural, and FANNY BY GASLIGHT 1944, Victorian drama with Stewart Granger. All of which were very good movies.

Top 10..#10 Cross of Fire.....Peckinpah at his best #8 Gregory Girl....is was ok....#7 The Verdict....at 7th...way too low...one of his great performances.....it is third at UMR. 5th Lolita...a good movie but not one to re-watch too often 4th 20,000 Leagues...his biggest hit...Julius Caesar....great performance by Mason...he out shines Brando...#3 Odd Man Out....saw this recently...it wa good but not great #2 A Star Is Born....should have won him an Oscar. #1 North by Northwest...hard to argue...as it is one of my favorites.. So I am at 18....just a little over half. Another fine addition to your library. Voted up.

Thanks Bruce, much appreciated. We have the same no.1 so that's cool. I've never seen The Verdict, I'm not much of a Paul Newman fan as you know but I should watch it for Mason. I haven't seen Odd Man Out either. 20,000 Leagues is a huge favorite of mine and my dads too, he loved Mason as Captain Nemo. And North By Northwest IMO the most enjoyable of all the Hitchcock thrillers, but not quite the masterpiece Psycho is. Cheers.

You never mentioned 'The Man Between' one of Mason's favourite films. Directed by Carol Reed a brilliant film set in Berlin just not long after WW2.

One of the greatest actors of all time. He was considered one of the top three best English actors of all time along with Lawrence Olivier & Alec Guiness. I remember him in Odd Man Out & Five Fingers. I think Odd Man Out is the best from above.

There's also the witty and ironical "A Touch of Larceny" (1960) directed by Guy Hamilton who subsequently directed a slew of James Bond films.

He was in many fine movies. But "Leagues" actually changed lives. I have a number of friends whose career choices were influenced by that film and Mason's performance in particular.
@raylenenielsen59433 жыл бұрын
James Mason was such a great actor, but he seemed to get the “bad guy” parts an awful lot. He didn’t have the leading role near enough, and I would’ve like to see him “get the girl” far more than he did.

Has anyone else other than myself noticed the many movies Mason has starred in with simply brilliant endings? For example, the one in which a woman in love with him walks through streets where the police are looking for him for a murder committed in the commission of a robbery, only to direct him to a deserted place where she pulls out a gun, tells him of her love and that they're "leaving" together, then commits suicide by cop with both dying from a hale of bullets by the police? The brilliance is we hear two bullets fired, presumably from the gun carried by the woman who found Mason, but no, we hear other shots and wonder how was it possible for her to fire four shots? Finding out that it was the police returning fire from the two rounds were shot, explaining the mystery. I could only wish "The Sopranos" could've ended on such a high note as opposed to that lame ending with the camera going blank. Ben Mankiewicz can put on such memorable movies considering his youthfulness.

All Mason's works were brilliant. However, "Five Fingers" really got to me. Such an ending. I wondered how many law enforcement career people watching the movies in civvies anticipated the ending? But on second thought, even a neophyte might've suspected that all couldn't have been that easy, given how cunning the noblewoman was.

The Seventh Vell 1945 Compton Bennett. Caught 1949 Max Ophuls. Muy interesante película con gran reparto. James Mason, Barbara Bel Geddes y Robert Ryan. Madame Bovary 1949 Vincente Minnelli . The Reckless Moment 1949 Max Ophuls. Participo en grandes películas bélicas. The Desert Rats 1953 Robert Wise. The Blue Max 1966 John Guillermin. Espectacular película bélica con gran reparto. George Peppard, James Mason y Ursula Andress. Cross of Iron 1977 Sam Peckinpah. Prince Valiant 1954 Henry Hathaway. 20.000 Leagues Under the Sea 1954 Richard Fleischer. Kirk Douglas, James Mason, Paul Lucas y Peter Lorre. Journey to the Center of the Earth 1959 Henry Levin. Lord Jim 1965 Richard Brooks. Junto al gran Peter O'Toole. Genghis Khan 1965 Henry Levin. Otras grandes películas. A Stars is Born 1954 George Cukor. Gran drama musical junto a la gran Judy Garland. Bigger Than Life 1956 Nicholas Ray. The Trials of Oscar Wilde 1960 Ken Hughes. The Fall of the Roman Empire 1964. The Pumpkin Eater 1964 Jack Clayton. The Boys from Brazil 1978 Franklin J. Schaffner. Gregory Peck, Laurence Olivier y James Mason. Murder by Decree 1979 Bob Clark. Evil Under the Sun 1982 Guy Hamilton. Odd Man Out 1947. The Desert Fox 1951 Henry Hathaway. The Prisoner of Zenda 1952 Richard Thorpe. North by Northwest 1959. Lolita 1962. Mítica película del gran Stanley Kubrick. Con un gran reparto. James Mason, Shelley Winters, Sue Lyon y Peter Sellers. Finalmente la gran película The Verdict 1982 Sidney Lumet.

Great post Marco, cheers. James Mason was another of dads favorites and one of mine too. As a kid I very much enjoyed watching him as Captain Nemo and Professor Lindenbrook, growing up I enjoyed his other performances in films like A Star is Born and North by Northwest. I watched him recently in The Boys from Brazil with Gregory Peck and Laurence Olivier. Thanks again for commenting.

Yeah! First....as I beat Flora to the comment box . So Mr. Mason gets 35 movies? He must be a favorite. #34 East Side West Side is good movie. #33 Boys of Peck has some moments. #32 Desert Rats and #31 Desert Fox...his Rummel movies did not get much love. #26 He plays a good bad guy in Lord Jim and #25 Prisoner of Zenda. #22 Madame Bovary...decent movie. #21 Heaven Can Wait seems low. It is 14th on my Mason page. #17 Murder by Decree...hey I just did a Plummer page #13 Last of Sheila...great movie...you need to see this one...unless you have seen it since our last Mason talk. #11 The Blue Max....good war movie. So that is 11 of the first 25
@Top10Charts39788 жыл бұрын
It was meant to be a top 30 but I decided to add a few bonus tracks, er I mean films. I wanted to get Desert Fox and Desert Rats in there too. More favorites here than in the Niven video. Blue Max is a war film I've watched many times over the years. Boys from Brazil is a guilty pleasure favorite. Murder by Decree is one of the better Sherlock Holmes films, Plummer and Mason are excellent.
