He had the style and, more importantly, the ruthlessness. The "unknown reason" why he refused a promiscuous character was the same as for Neal McDonough: devout Catholicism and a strong sense of monogamy to his wife. Even acting intimate with another woman was/is unacceptable for both, so they ended up in primarily villainous roles. McGoohan's only on-screen kiss was on "Secret Agent/ Danger Man", and the actress who was the recipient was his real-life wife.

W Craig dying in the last movie, think that Brocoli/Wilson should think outside the box here. Taking cues from Craig's tun as bond...orphans always make the best recruits. Not trying to find someone to play Bond, but someone (male, as Fleming wrote the character as a man and Brocoli/Wilson swore would always be cast as a man). Find someone to take up the 007 position. Stop trying to redo the franchise...accept what was and carry forth..bring new traits to 007.

@@danieltaylor1494 I believe that British actor Tom Ellis would've made a great Bond, as he has all of the right qualities for that iconic role, but since he is now in his mid forties (and Eon want to sign an actor to a multi-picture contract) he is already a bit too long in the tooth for it. They SHOULD have chosen him for 'Casino Royale' instead of Craig, but it's obviously too late now. It's a shame that Ellis never got the chance to have a crack at it, as I think he would've done a great job, but there you go.

McGoohan had the presence and acting ability to be a great bond but his ethics would prevent him from taking that type of part. He also had a distain for Leslie Charteris character “The Saint” another series from the Lou Grade stable. There is a great picture on the wall of the well trodden long corridor at Pinewood of some of the cast of Hell Drives having tea break. Being diplomatic I think all the Bond actors had their moments ...everyone is different and therefore injects their own personality into a role. That said I am hoping when a new 007 actor is finally chosen the producers have the films bring back some of the fun (gadgets & witty dialogue) from the older films as Daniel Craig's more recent Bond films have been super-serious. I would like to see the devil-may-care witty and charming super-spy return ! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂

Connery was the first and probably the best...at least in the first films (Dr. No through Thunderball)...but then you could sense his boredom with the character. Daniel Craig provided an edge that I truly appreciated and was great in Casino Royale through Skyfall...and I place him a close second (Spectre had some good moments...but No Time To Die failed). Roger Moore was my introduction...and while I loved the campiness of his tenure, it fell flat on the last two films...For Your Eyes Only and Live And Let Die were his best...he places third. I prefer Dalton's Bond in License to Kill slightly over Brosnan's Bond in Goldeneye (the best films for these two)...Dalton was a bit over acted, but didn't rely on gadgets as much, more of a spy...but the scripts were the scripts. And Lazenby was so wooden...I hate that he ruined the film featuring the best Bond Girl...Dame Diana Rigg. Eva Green is 1B...Diana 1A. Glad no Americans have played Bond, and they shouldn't...but I guess we agree that a Scottish Lad was the best. Next up? Maybe Harry Potter? Or how about one of the Dr. Who portrayers? Well done Sprockets!

I enjoyed all six actors who were officially cast as Bond, but I would have dearly loved to see Patrick McGoohan in the role. He would have been brilliant, perhaps even the best. I do, however, understand his reasoning for turning down the part. He was a dedicated husband and a devout Catholic. As a married actor myself, I would not want to play a role where I would be called upon to have to kiss a woman who is not my wife, let alone bed multiple women. I can play a killer in a film or TV series because I'm not really killing anyone on set. However, if I kiss a woman on set, I'm really kissing someone who isn't my wife. That's not something I am comfortable doing. Apart from that aspect, McGoohan would have been so good in the role.

Daniel is by the fae the best TRUE Bond because Bond is a thoroughly unpleasant and unlikeable arse and Daniel plays that brilliantly: he is dour, cynical, brutal, sexist and barely under control . . .hell, he even tries to outright murder Blofeld whilst knowing he is under intense observation. Dalton and Beosnan, whilst very capable and respected actors, were handsome leading men given the task of portraying a borderline sociopath and whilst both portrayed Bond as cynical and jaded, neither had the sheer physical presence of Craigs Bond or the ability to portray the physical brutality of Bond. Craig's Bond is the one we see where the job takes its toll both physically and emotionally.

Fame chooses you as well as your audience .That is why Connery is the best Bond. With Brosnan, I kept waiting for Stephanie Zimbalist to come save him like the TV series. They gave poor Roger a cartoon series.Even Connery said it. Craig advised the next Bond not to give us Sh*t.Too bad he didn't follow his own advice with that turd No Time to Die. What an ego to suggest he was the last Bond.

Like Daniel Craig before him, I believe Tom Hardy is far too short for Bond's dinner jacket at just 5'9 and would be much better suited to playing a villain instead. What's more, Hardy is almost fifty and, so therefore, he's now way too old to take on the part anyway.
