Captain Slow would then go on to hit 258mph at the same location in the Veyron SS. It was a new speed record for a production car, for about 20 minutes. Bugatti then put their test driver in the car and he 267mph. 😂

This was one of the first segments of Top Gear I ever saw back in the day, and it's the one that really made me a fan of the show. I still think it's one of the best editing jobs they've ever done - it's all quite lighthearted and over the top, and yet manages to be pretty damn epic and just flat out cool when he hits max speed. Great stuff, this is what Top Gear does best. Well, this, and having three dowdy middle aged blokes shout at each other.

Captain slow going fast was a running gag. It almost put him in the vampire jet dragster, but he was swapped out for Hammond late in production. Probably saved his life; he’s taller and less fit than Hammond, and doesn’t think he’d have made it.

That's the great thing about the Veyron and why it's a technological achievement on the same level as Concorde. It's not just that it goes damned fast, it does so while carrying a fully kitted out luxury car and is relatively comfortable even at extreme speeds.

In the original show the official VW test pilot is shown driving the car and beating that speed record by a considerable margin. It would have been pretty interesting to know in what way the show's car was different than the record breaking vehicle.

This was just the Veyron. The one you’re probably talking about was the Veyron SuperSports, naked carbon fiber with orange trim. James May also did that top speed test as well, but then the Bugatti test driver also did it and bested his time.

This episode was always the reason why I didn't like the nickname "Captain slow." James May was the one that they trusted to do this test, so clearly slow was not the right adjective, cautious probably should have been the word used.

The actual speed run was done in the dry. Most likely, those rain shots were done on a different day. But even with it dry, it still looks properly scary.

I don't know why this 16.4 but I think it's much more beautiful and elegant than the Veyron SS, the SS is much wilder, lower, an incredible car but in terms of looks I prefer this one.
