I was a road cyclist before I was a sim racer, and boy did that help me. There's a surprisingly large amount of useful sim racing stuff that transfers better from road cycling than road driving. You can far more easily be on the limit than in a road car, you get to understand racing lines, have first hand experience with aero, how weight transfer matters, how gearing matters, etc. ...oh, and being in better shape will improve your stamina, concentration, and generally help you be a faster racer, but that's not specific to cycling. Oh, and May's comments about maintenance are key. Take good care of your bike: keep the frame clean, keep the drivetrain clean and lubed, check your chain wear and your tyre pressure, and take it to the shop for a thorough clean once a year and bob's your uncle. As to his comment about investing in a frame rather than a better bike, that's also my personal philosophy - you get a much stronger path to upgrade. That being said, if you don't plan on ever upgrading, a better balance will give you a better experience, especially a good drivetrain. In sim racing terms, it's the equivalent of spending an equal amount on a Fanatec CSL Clubsport wheelbase and crummy entry-level plastic pedals, or a T300 RS wheelbase and T3PA pedals. The former does give you a better path to upgrade, but the latter is probably a better as-is package.

James May totally seems like the kinda guy who can make subtle shifts in a conversation with someone who's nervous to talk to him to make them not so nervous. it's a fantastic trait that just makes him a great guy to chat with.

What a great interview, very calm for a James May fan, and you let him finnish what he was saying, something a few professional interviewers have yet to master. Well done.

Seeing James Cessna flight on top gear many years ago is what convinced me to go and get my pilots licence So James, if you read this, thanks !

I think we need to get Jimmy a slave soon that whispers “Memento mori” in his ear that he still is just a youtuber. Like how a slave whispered in the ear of a general from the Roman Empire returned in triumph.

Was a good video mate and you can tell you were nervous but you had a great chat with him. It was great to see you were still chatting about bikes at the end. Nice job jimmer!

This interview is why I like James May so much. It turned into a conversation real quick and he seemed actually interested in what Jimmy was saying to him as well. I believe this is very rare.

Solid advice on buying a bike, although depending on budget, I would tend to recommend spending a bit more as upgrading is drastically more expensive than buying the next groupset up. Also, generally speaking, bike manufacturers largely use the same frame for frames with a 105, Ultegra, Dura-Ace groupset... but use lesser frames for any groupset below that. Manufactures to look at are: Canyon, Rose, and Ribble for the best value in a world on lock-down.
