This week James and Rachael argue about pickle. More specifically, homemade vs Branston. I think you can guess who prefers what.

I’ve been on the lookout for Branston Pickle here in South Africa ever since James made his cheese and pickle sandwich in Sarnies of the 70’s and finally managed to track down a bottle at our local Spar supermarket. I’m completely hooked and cheese sandwiches will never be the same again. Not even the imported price tag ( the equivalent of £4 for a small jar ) is a deterrent. Got to side with James on this one !!

Branston Pickle appears to have followed suit with almost everything else that was once 'great and British' - it has changed, somewhat. The product appears to have recently adopted the flavour of 2 month old damp knickers. I realise this description may cause certain types of people to rush out and buy the product in anticipation, but it's certainly not my bag. Please don't ask about the research involved in this deduction. I will not respond.

@SighNaps
@SighNaps 3 жыл бұрын
What they are referring to is a jar of chutney (like a chunky jam) of chopped carrot, cauliflower, onion and some other vegetables pickled in a thick brown sauce made of vinegar, salt, sugar, tomato, apple and some other spices. Its spread on bread for sandwiches and some other uses. The pickle and cheese is a common English sandwich of this chutney spread on bread and cheddar cheese. It's very different to what is called a pickle in the US, which is usually a whole pickled cucumber in brine.

There is a magical bond between chedder and branston. They work *so* well with each other. Other pickles/chutneys/relishes work better with other meats (ham and Piccalilli come to mind) but with a hard chedder you need that strong sharp chunky explosion branston delivers. The *only* thing which beats branston is malt vinegar pickled onions and apple slices which is sort of like a deconstructed branston anyways ;)

Unfortunately the creator (wife of a friend) has now passed away. Other than that, nothing can beat Branston. Rachael just look at the ingredient list of Branston pickle and use that as inspiration to make your own. It does contain carrot, rutabega, onion, cauliflower, date & tomato paste, plus the usual vinegar and "spirit vinegar" which I don't think is Sake, ; ) could be interesting to make one version with the ingredients he asked for and then your own version. On the correct side of the pond, a "pickle" is a pickled cucumber. We don't have chutney here, unless it would be a pickled relish. In my childhood in the '50s and '60s, my mother made incredibly superior pickles to anything commercially made. i'm not sure of the recipe, but the resultant cooked product was left to "pickle" in the brine in large crocks, which were then cuvered in layers of grape leaves, then weighted down with a large ceramic plate topped with a rock. After propper pickling had transpired, the resultant product was preserved in sealed mason jars.

Basically what this video reveals is James' concern that people are trying to feed him weird things without his knowing (glass bottles?!). This is basically James channeling Richard "Don't like fish" Hammond. Compost?! what are you talking about, man?!

Can not wait to see what happens. I do like Branston both the normal and the small size bits sandwich type. Not to say you can't use the normal size one as well. Yummy to both. I too like my curry pickles. Mango. Lime both normal and hot. Aubergine one. And spicy tomato and chilli. And finally chilli cutney. Lovely.

Pineapple is best eaten fresh. Why ruin something delicious by adding vinegar and letting it ferment?

The ultimate sandwich.... cheese, Branston, and cheese and onion crisps. All on white bread, of course with butter.
