I'd sure like to know if James played San Antonio waaay back around 89 to 94, I remember a band did this song in a little bar off Walzem Road in San Antonio, I don't remember much about the band, except they did Choctaw Bingo to the letter. Just wondered if it was you guys.

i was raised up on lake eufaula and spent my 21st birthday at club 69 when i was about 18 i ran a stoplight on shawnee bypass in muskogee and got pulled over lol and i cant tell you how many times ive played at choctow bingo in durant and i know people that fit all these characters myself ...great song

Its good. And he wrote the song. But Ray Wiley Hubbard's version is really much much better.

Well, Guvna, I'm not making fun of the good ol' UK. I'm repeating an old Woody Guthrie song that Billy Bragg, your best song-writer in a long time I might add, IMO, finished with the help of WIlco. Woody first made the pun about your Monarchy, and wittingly veiled it in a Minor Key. That's brilliant, Guv. I know y'all know tuning because of my old buddy, Billy B. Billy wales, I mean WHALES. lol. I met Billy a few times back in the 90's. He's The Best!

You're definitely right! I probably shouldn't have made it seem like they are just in the south. Anywhere and everywhere, rural people are the same. Actually, my mother was born in Virginia but moved to the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York. Talk about some country folk haha.

It was covered by the great Ray Wylie Hubbard on Delirium Tremelos in 2005 but McMurtry definately wrote it and released it on Saint Mary Of The Woods back in 2002

Been listening to James forever... He lived in Waterford, Va, for a while back then... Played the Waterford Community Center one night for 30-40 people...Before his set he was sitting outside on the steps... Stopped to chat for a minute or two... He was different back then... No matter... Always loved his song-writing... Bob

This song is amazing. All his lyrics are the best. And boy-o-boy... can he play guitar too. He's one of those players that recordings can't do 'em justice. He's a real Texas Troubadour... with a screamin' guitar. He's a real BAD ASS if there ever was one. This cd is totally kick ass. Til this day, over in England, they don't know a thing about a Minor Key. Thanks for sharin', Mr. McMurtry.
