One of the best jazz trumpeters of all times - period.

A few decades ago I had a job working on aTV commercial that took me around the world; starting from L.A. I then went from NY, to London, Bangkok, and Australia. The project was the first "I still call Australia home" commercial for Qantas Airlines. While in Australia we flew all over, Sydney, Wilpena Pound, Alice Springs, and Port Campbell. I was the aerial cinematographer and besides shooting scenic landscape shots, talent was placed in unique sites. In Port Campbell we met up with the talent; James Morrison. I had never heard of him, so I didn't know what to expect. Note: when shooting from aircraft we shoot without sound because of the rotor and jet engine sound. Our location was a place called - The Seven Sisters (?) a group of rock outcroppings off the coast where the pilot dropped James off. We circled him as he played his horn. That night we sat at a big wooden table, at a small hotel where we were the only guests, along with James' brother. We had some good food and fun laughs. It wasn't until the commercial aired did I actually hear James play. James has his own plane and he and his brother departed the next morning and in a few days we would hook up with him again in Alice Springs. (The cross-country flight took us a little longer in the Jet Ranger helicopter and we shot senics along the way.) It took me a few months, but I acquired every CD he's made and he is now right at the top of my favorite contemporary trumpet players list. Many years later I was browsing the L.A. Times Sunday Calendar Section. I spotted a rare concert happening with Lalo Schifrin... and then I noticed that Brian Bromberg was playing bass and JAMES was on trumpet... WOW! Needless to say I had to hear him live, and I did. The sad thing for me was that after the show I reintroduced myself but he had no clue to who I was and was eager to move on to the next person... that's all right... he's still one of the greats and I admire him for his talents. For me, it was an honor to photograph him and to be apart of the team that made that commercial so successful.

I'd never heard of this guy before, but I watched him live last night. I don't think he's known much in the UK ( I may be wrong ? ), but he was on at my local theatre for a one-off gig, and I thought I'd give it a go. All I can say is WOW !! I was totally gobsmacked at what he did. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. And his 2 sons are also extremely talented musicians. Most important of all, they all looked like they were thoroughly enjoying playing ( enjoying it, and then some - it was a joy to watch ! ) As I say, last night was the first time I'd heard him - I'm now seeking out any recordings I can find :-) ( hence commenting here ! )

That first song has to be the smoothest way I have ever seen someone play off of not being able to hit an ultra high note lol. Even James Morrison, the trumpet god he is can struggle when playing early on without enough of a warm up. The professionalism though where he knows he's not gonna hit it and cracks a quick joke.

I thought you weren't suppose to puff out your cheeks when playing a brass instrument
@tylerhoughton60799 жыл бұрын
Doug Al Everyone has a different style of playing, I thought the same thing when I was in middle school but then I saw professional players and asked the same question. The answer I got was what I first said, It's kind of like your health, everyone has a different way in which their body functions, what is good for one person is not good for another. Also, puffing your cheeks allows your body to hold a bit more air and if you are a brass player I highly recommend you go watch his tutorial videos. Type in on KZbin: James Morrison trumpet tutorial.
