The thing is many of Johnson's supporters have been parroting this lie ever since Starmer took leadership of the Labour Party, and I think the Tories are more than happy for their supporters to spread such smears - so the idea these resignations are morally motivated is laughable at best. I suspect they knew the Johnson ship was sinking and they'd been waiting for a reason to jump, but needed something that was relatively unrelated to Partygate because this was an issue that affected the Party as a whole and they were potentially implicated in. This issue was perfect because it was exclusively relative to Johnson's character.

Very dangerous direction for Tory party to take. Saville was a friend of Margret Thatcher who invited him to repeated Christmas dinners and campaigned hard for him to be make a Sir despite others reservations. Edwina Curry appointed Sir Jimmy to head a committee on Broadmore . Sir Jimmy was a keen Tory. Although I have little knowledge of the Crimes Saville committed I know the decisions wether to prosecute him at the time were based on witnesses and Police nervousness to take on a very popular public figure. It was the Conservative party of the 1980s who gave jimmy saville the opportunity and access to abuse children when edwina currie gave him the authority to do what he wanted in broadmoor. Margaret thatcher also lobbied heavily for jimmy saville to get a knighthood. Jimmy saville influence wouldn’t have been as big as it was without the support of the Tories.
