Not trying to start a row here, just genuinely asking your opinion. If police suspect that a 15 year old girl has hidden illegal and/or dangerous items or substances on her person, what should they do? Is it the manner in which it was done, rather than the action itself, that you object to? Is there a 'right' way of doing such a thing? Or should 15 year olds be allowed to conceal drugs/weapons without risk of search. Again, I'm just asking, not necessarily disagreeing with you. Also, I'm an Irishman, so how the London police behave is of little consequence to me (although some Irishmen were mistaken in thinking that in the not too distant past!)

I’m a soft-spoken white woman, and have lived in Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana. I carried on felonious behavior for a couple of decades, and always flew under the radar. When I did get stopped on traffic violations, i never had to worry about violence. Even when I was arrested, they were pretty chill. It isn’t luck. It’s whiteness. I will always be haunted by the death of Sandra Bland, a recent college graduate, ready to start her career, and she died in jail, over a minor traffic violation. She was black. This is extremely upsetting. I teach students who are at risk and cannabis use is a common theme that we have to deal with. No matter what your opinions on cannabis are there is no justification for what the teachers or the police officers did to this child. It is peverse.
@michaelashley5380
@michaelashley5380 2 жыл бұрын
also, cannabis for some kids is self-medication against what they face in their real lives (i used to be a teacher and school is not real). The problem with the education system is the teachers are in the main by well-meaning but ultimately middle-class people who are trying to pass on their middle-class values to working-class kids. So drugs are bad and you involve the police straight away and defer to them - especially if you are a white middle-class teacher. Whereas if you are working class, the only reason there are police is to keep you in line and pass out crime numbers when you are assaulted or burgled. (unless you happen to be a Russian oligarch, or wealthy because thats who the police are for.).

I grew up in a household where both my parents smoked cannabis, I had no idea, until I was fifteen and then I found out that they had been smoking it in the house since I was young. While clearly this teacher should never be given this kind of authority ever again I feel like we're missing the forest for the trees when we hold individuals accountable. This teacher didn't spring fully formed out of the ether that day. If this was the first time they did something egregious I'd personally be shocked. I'm not saying they all need to be sacked but the people in charge of sacking this teacher didn't see anything wrong with their actions either. The entire system was built on classism and racism and policies that protect and preserve those traditions. Why did no one ever teach this teacher what's acceptable and what's not? Why were their beliefs never challenged to get to this point? I have so many questions but only if I focus on the larger picture and not this quite horror teacher.

Above the teacher is a manager. Over them sits OFSTED. To have such a policy in action reveals the actions of those two layers. When ethics and morality are devoid in the structures ruling our educational establishments this is the result of the imbeciles in charge. That the teacher simply followed a flowchart to action such a process isn’t an excuse but it exemplifies the attitudes of those in charge and the inferred consequences of breaking their authority. This also applies to the actions of the police. What is inexcusable is that those responsible for implementing such policies will escape public scrutiny. Obedience to authority was examined by psychologists after Adolf Eichmann claimed, in the Nuremberg Trials, as his defence, that he acted to safeguard his own life fearing the consequences from those in charge over him. What we witness nearly eighty years later is the rise of woke management seeking to appease the chattering classes. This time their stupidity is exposed for all to see. It’s about time we threw out the dross whose only attribute to rising above their dim wits was to fit socially and obey those above them, without question.

I’m a 51 year old, white American male (with no children) and this story makes me livid. The only thing that surprises me, is that this happened in London and not some predominately white suburb, of any number of American cities. Anyone who is being truly honest knows, this would never happen to a white girl. The dehumanizing behavior towards “others” by whites, in Britain and America, runs so deep, is so ingrained, the vast majority can’t even recognize it, when it surfaces. My heart breaks for that young woman, and her family. How could you ever feel safe, again? We must do better, it is up to all of us. Until true racial equality is achieved, not just in law but also in the way we think and act, we are all guilty.
@ptv8113
@ptv8113 2 жыл бұрын
Disco, I agree with everything and racism was almost certainly involved but in UK this could happen to a white girl. It isn’t that binary. Perhaps in US but not UK. There are a lot more under underprivileged, white kids in UK cities than there are in US. This is also about socio-economics. It wouldn’t have happened to a white or black girl if they were at an expensive private school.

Being a teacher should be a protected title like Doctor, but it's not. I would never have imagined that fellow graduate educators could have been so callous and power-hungry. If indeed they were graduate teachers, they have no place in what was once a noble profession. P45s all round wouldn't be enough. These monsters need to be dragged before the beak to answer for this horrific assault on a child.

As one police officer said on LBC that this type of search occurs on regular basis on the streets but is just not reported because the people it happens to are to the poor and underprivileged who have no recourse

I am amazed that no-one intervened at any point to stop this barbaric treatment of a young girl. Not one adult had the decency or even the common sense to halt the proceedings. Cowards and idiots.

The most annoying thing about this story’s coverage is the LACK of it’s coverage. A cruelty to a cat got more coverage than this story.

US listener here. This is what cops do regardless of the country. If the public doesn't jump on this and call for firings and law changes you'll get what we have here, pretty much a police state.

Here the police and state are connected, this shouldn't be in a democracy, police and government should be separate. In 2005 a Brazilian man Jean Charles da Silva e de Menezes was on his way to work as an electrician. The police shot him dead because they thought he looked like a terrorist. The woman in charge of the operation went on to become the police commissioner, no police were charged with the execution of Mr de Menezes. When any inquiry is opened by the government about police behaviour, you can bet on the result. The prime minister partied while demanding the country was in lockdown, the police guarding him and his ministers, stayed silent, the enquiry is a forgone conclusion and the pm and ministers are still in post.

@@skullduggerysmiles8393 decentralization isn't better, just different. Because each state sets their own policing policy you see a lot of fragmentation. Hiding bad behavior is much easier. So even if there is a change at the local level, sweeping change (cultural or legislative) is much harder to accomplish.

@@varunojar5602 thank you for your reply, I have thought that was the case, you also have so many organisations with members elected and otherwise it must be a mine field. I think it is part of our psychology, we are attracted to jobs that resonate with our psyche, the people who decide to become law enforcers are probably, because of what makes them tick, not the best people for the job.
