James O'Brien wonders if Tory MP has 'given up' after 'ridiculous' election comments | LBC

James O'Brien reacts to Tory MP Steve Baker outlining his plans if he loses his seat at the General Election.
Without hesitation, Baker told Victoria Derbyshire that he'd go 'skydiving, motorcycling and fast catamaran sailing.'
It comes after he also told LBC's Iain Dale that he wouldn't cancel any of his upcoming holiday plans, despite Rishi Sunak sending the public to the polls on the 4th July.
"Why 'fast' catamaran sailing?", James asks - wondering if the MP said these things 'on purpose' or if he was just 'being ridiculous.'

To be fair, most catamarans are pretty fast. In ideal circustances. In serious seas, they are dangerous. They can flip over, and if they do, they stay flipped over. A normal sailing yacht will right itself even if it were to flip over, which it won't. You get into heavy sees with a catamaran, a freak wave hits you in just the right way, and over you go. I've never done a parachute jump, but I was a motorcycle courier in London for four years. So I did the motorbike bit.

I've never been skydiving nor ridden a motorcycle - even as a pillion passenger - and the only boats I've sailed have been monohulls. I can confidently inform James, however, that the distinction between a "fast" catamaran and one without such a qualifying descriptor is in the emphasis in the design for speed (ie. racing) over any practical transportation utility. You have the hulls, some sails and rigging, and if you're lucky somewhere for the crew to sit - and that is it. There are also "cruising" catamaran yachts which have a similar utility profile to monohull yachts, with the exception of generally greater speed and stability for a given hull volume and displacement; these have all the normal creature comforts of a yacht, such as cabins for sleeping and a galley for cooking.

I don't sky dive but I do paraglide and last time I checked (probably 10 years ago now) the stats are very similar to riding a motorcycle on the road, between 3-5 life changing or fatal accidents per 1,000 participants per year. Do you know what's nearly double that number? Horse riding!

A catamaran can be like caravan safe and easy to sail. Sail a Hobie Cat, effectively, a dinghy that skims across water several times faster. Misbehaves rapidly! An Ocean Racing Cat similar size to a tennis court will accelerate like a Ferrari. Add in waves and all that the sea throws is certainly not a caravan.
