I met...Mr. Root in 2004 at Ozzfest in NC (I want to say Raleigh, but they switched back and forth between there and Charlotte). He recognized my roommate who had interviewed the band in '99, and came over to talk. My roommate said, "this is my roommate *name*", and "Mr. Root" shook my hand and said, "hey man, I'm Jim". He was out in the crowd (without mask, of course, wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap), walking around with his gf (I'm guessing), a couple bands before Slipknot headlined the second stage (I want to say Skindred had just played). I didn't realize who it was until I asked my roommate after "Jim" left.

I actually liked the .5 era for Jim. The mask itself isn't too interesting, but the look as a whole with his hair, beard, and jumpsuit really let his personality shine through. It's got kind of a rockabilly vibe to me.

i find this shit SO fascinating, being an ex-special make-up effects artist myself and a long-time maggot, i never thought in a million years there would be a resource like this and a person who would ever know this much detail about their masks (i used to have hundreds of photos and posters all over my house from metal magazines and i would study and examine all the pics and try and figure out the origins and structure of their masks and jumpsuits obsessively). I do have a question however that's always intrigued me.. do you, or does anyone, know WHO actually tailored all the leather straps and rivets and sewed the masks for them originally and throughout their early careers? I can't imagine they would all have that knowledge right off the bat, or the ability to fashion and design them and as you often say, they don't seem to have the best understanding of latex and the structure of rubber masks and make-up, etc. So who actually designed their masks and incorporated all the hoods and straps and extra components that were added to make them that would make them so unique and help withstand all the water, dirt, blood, sweat, vomit, make-up, and head banging, etc?

I know people start to dislike slipknots masks around AHIG but those masks give me a lot of nostalgia because that’s when I got into Slipknot at 13. And this was the first album I ever bought.

When I was a teenager looking though Hit Parader and Circus magazines, I was always intrigued at the different rivet patterns between the early Forum masks, but never considered they were just rotting and decaying from constant use. These videos are a fantastic reference tool!

The chin is easy for me to think he's a right handed player so he's going to be looking down to the left, and the lips i think is because he started interviewing more as to where most of the band gives one word answers
