A masterpiece. James is one of a few artists that can really take you along for the ride and make you feel like you're there. Unfortunately times have gotten even worse for jobs like millworkers at least then there was likely a pension and decent benefits, now mostly outsourced to another country.

Listening to James Taylor from an early age, helped me zone in and understand my ongoing depression..the lyrics spoke to me in soothing tones. Later l found out that James himself was struggling with addiction and depression and sought refuge from time to time to address his problems. Thank you James for being the beacon that has saved many souls through your music...and maybe saving yourself in the process!!

My mothers favorite song, and mine too. I was a forklift driver for a long time and this song gave me hope in dark times. Much happier now, but for a long time felt like this mill worker.

this has always been my favourite JT song. my mom showed me him at a young Ange, and I'm from Massachusetts. she worked in a factory her whole life. there were times I slept on a bed on the floor with nothing else to my name really and I atleast had that because she worked her hands to cracking everyday in a tool factory. she told me one day she actually drives down the road home from work stares at her hands and wonders where she went wrong. ill think of her when I hear this song until I'm in the ground. I'm in a barracks room right now in the navy and crying because I miss her and wish I was home with her. I guess I wanted to say this and here is just easier if someone actually reads this, thanks for listening.

As someone who knows the working person's life all too well this is one of those songs that gets right down to the marrow of my bones. Very few songs make me want to cry whenever I hear them but this happens to be one of them.

Me too. My dad grew up on a farm in Missouri. Retired from Ford Motor Company as a relief man. My mother would pick the glass out of his back before bed. He would let the blood out of his smashed fingers with a .32” drill bit. His hands were huge, gnarly, and beautiful. I have what I enjoy today because of him. Great song.

I heard Francis at the Oscars: she was singing your song, James. Heard you for the first time in 1968 when I was doing time in the Navy... so many things have happened after we "survived" the atrocities of that so-called 'war', but you just keep shining through with the GIFT that is yours alone. GB&KY for so many years of fighting the good fight: the least of your fans (and still a 'child') & in Acapulco. - Rob

Now my grandfather was a sailor He blew in off the water My father was a farmer And I, his only daughter Took up with a no good millworking man From Massachusetts Who dies from too much whiskey And leaves me these three faces to feed Millwork ain't easy Millwork ain't hard Millwork it ain't nothing But an awful boring job I'm waiting (on) a daydream To take me through the morning And put me in my coffee break Where I can have a sandwich And remember Then it's me and my machine For the rest of the morning (And) the rest of the afternoon And the rest of my life Now my mind begins to wander To the days back on the farm I can see my father smiling at me Swinging on his arm I can hear my granddad's stories Of the storms out on Lake Eerie Where vessels and cargos and fortunes And sailors' lives were lost , but it's my life has been wasted And I have been the fool To let this manufacturer Use my body for a tool (I'll) ride home in the evening Staring at my hands Swearing by my sorrow that a young girl Ought to stand a better chance So may I work the mills just as long as I am able And never meet the man whose name is on the label me and my machine For the rest of the morning And the rest of the afternoon (and on and on and on...) For the rest of my life
