I love your compassion for these little critters. My mom used to live in a duplex apartment in GA with the back patio facing a thick patch of protected woodland/greenspace. She arranged her living room so that when she watched t.v. she could also glance out the glass patio door. One night she was watching one of her shows and something caught the corner of her eye; as she focused on the distraction, she observed a masked, chubby, curious face studying her intently. She named "him" *Ricky* . About two months go by and Ricky is now coming all the way into the living room to grab some tasty cat food from the cat's bowl; it was a joy for Mom to feel so close to nature, all alone inside her little apartment. One evening Ricky didn't show up for dinner, and then it was two days, three, a week, two weeks. She hoped for the best but accepted the worst, that Ricky would not return again. Perhaps three weeks passed, and it was early evening, not even dark -- she heard faint tapping on the glass, as Ricky had learned to do when "he" requested entrance to the abode. She dismissed it as imagination at first until she heard a succession of louder, faster, and more frantic tapping. When she looked out the patio glass, there were four or five wide-eyed bandits staring up at her, including Ricky.

I love how he is feeding with carrots here. Raccoon are basically "opportunistic omnivores" and can process almost the same variety of food sources as opossum and carrion. This strategy worked quite well for them until we hairless apes began colonizing and changing their habitats from open woodlands to urban city landfills. Many raccoon are obese in modern times because they consume more of our junk food leftovers (garbage) than they do wild fruit/vegetation/roots or even scavenged meat and insects. *EDIT* James, I'll make you a deal... you try offering them some carrots, unsalted peanuts, watermelon, or cantaloupe, and I will make a much needed appointment with my eye doctor.
@womanofsubstance87355 жыл бұрын
@@treborironwolfe These are not carrots. He even shows you a picture of the wiener package at 9:26. As wieners go, these are fairly low in preservatives, color, and other additives, BUT each wiener contains 500 mg of sodium. RDA of sodium for a human adult is 2400 mg., and humans weigh several times a juvenile raccoon's weight. I'm not sure if sodium is as bad for 'coons as it is for dogs and cats. You are right, though; this little guy is looking a little porky. These critters are so cute, though, that it would be hard to resist interacting with them.

I have lived in the same apartment building for 15 years. And for about 11 of those years I have been feeding the little squinnies (ground squirrels) Out of my hand from behind our building. Then we had a new neighbor move in after construction she's only been here for like 6 months at that time. And she starts snapping on me about feeding the wild animals. And then started scaring them with her dog and told me not to feed them anymore. Now they're too scared to come up to the building by me or anything because of this little witch. I miss Skittles, munchie, Gus Gus, and Jack Jack!! Thank you James for doing what you do much love

Love Raccoons, one of the few things I miss after leaving Oregon for AZ. We had a Mama Raccoon we used to feed, she was pretty upset on moving day. She sat on our deck and looked so sad, she seemed to know we were leaving. Also had Skunks that we fed too. The Skunks used to hear us toss cat food off the deck, a short time later they'd come walking up the trail. They used to let me hang out with them.

What a rare treat; a single friendly diner in the daylight. He is a pretty boy! I get a kick out of the way they have worn little trails in the yard and they all use them. They don't seem to need highway markers to take the correct route. Is that memory or scent? Or both. So cute watching his retreat.
