Good info! I’m an American living in Mexico. My adult daughter is a Mexican and US citizen, but she is in the process of getting her Spanish citizenship. Her grandmother is a Spanish citizen and apparently my daughter qualifies for citizenship because of that. So, I was wondering if that will allow me to get residency in Spain. Once my daughter gets her Spanish citizenship.

To me is very interesting to see how Spanish citizens see other countries. The Spanish citizens view of Spain is really really bad, I just came from Paris (second time visiting Paris) and my colleagues from work were very exited and asking me: how was it? Paris is so beautiful, no? Bla bla bla and I am like: I am sorry, I like Madrid way better… and they made fun of me, like it was something absolutely impossible, because most of them think that Paris is way better than Madrid… People here also ask me WHY DID YOU MOVE FROM CANADA? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Spaniards think Canada is heaven on earth, I guess because they never lived or visited there. Spaniards don’t appreciate Spain and underestimate their beautiful country! Yes, with many issues, but that’s everywhere. I am not saying YOU are like this, but many ppl are!

I agree with you, I'm from Madrid and I love it but I used to not realize how beautiful it is... or much less than visitors... and then I started traveling to many different countries and cities and now I think finally I realize how incredible this city is@@vanpak

As an expat, huge thanks for emphasizing learning the LANGUAGE. It's responsible for like 80% of a successful integration. Without the language you will stay a forever alien just wondering around like a tourist. With language, you can socialize, learn more about the culture, history, traditions, etc. I would give another 15% for finding a fitting job and living space (town and apartment) but the rest 5% is basically paperwork and such.

This is so true! I’ve lived in USA and Canada, both countries have so many immigrants that don’t speak the local language… in Canada I’ve seen many people becoming Canadian citizens that can’t have a conversation in English (I was on the English side) I helped ppl, with documentation, doctors, dentist, Canadian citizens that can’t speak English! I created a free English practice, it was online, ask who joined, few people! =[ I lived in USA to learn English, in 6 months I was speaking, when I moved to Canada I was already fluent, now I am in Spain and although I use very minimal Spanish on my daily life, but I have the very minimal to have a conversation in Spanish, for shopping, for doctors, dentist and to connect to my local friends! Learning the language is key for success as an immigrant anywhere!

James, you are absolutely correct about hiring a tutor to learn/improve one’s Spanish. I speak at an intermediate level and have studied twice at a university in Santiago de Compostela. A couple of times I worked with an excellent teacher online from a Mexican university. Not only did she understand how the language is used in Spain and Mexico but she explained the subtleties of the language which was fascinating.

Great stuff. I would add/ emphasize: * really understand the wealth tax (At both the country and province level) - This has been hard since the government has been making last minute rules. Clearly this is part of the tax simulation/ getting a good tax person recommendation. * Visit areas/ schools/ etc before you move * Think about when you move here, particularly for US citizens - Better to move with less than 183days left in the calendar year so as to not be a tax resident that first year.

So you’re planning to move to Spain and thinking about avoiding taxes? Really? That’s why for most Spanish people you’ll be always be foreigners. You only want the “beautiful” and “idealized” part of Spain - a very superficial part. But you don’t take care about how you’re impacting our economy and our general wellbeing, and the sustainability of our system and culture.

Excellent video James! I’m from the US and my girlfriend is from Málaga. Planning our permanent move to Fuengirola in the next few years. The US tax code for expats is plain and simple absurd. Just like the Hotel California, you can check out anytime you want, but can never leave 🤣 Anyway, I’ve been a follower of your channel for a while now and really learn a bunch form you and Yoli. We visit our apartment in Fuengirola every summer so maybe one day we’ll run into each other if you’re down south! I also wanted to second your comment about learning the language and would also add to anyone moving to Spain, learning the language and more than anything embracing the amazing Spanish culture will certainly make the Spaniards be a lot more open and helpful to you which in turn will make your transition a lot easier. Good luck!

@@mitcoesWhy would I want to register as an LLC? I don’t own a business. The tax law in the US is nothing short of criminal. No US citizen should have to file or pay taxes if they generate their income outside of the US. Like he said on the video, only two countries in the world have this law; the US and Eritrea. And the law goes deeper than that, it can involve children even if not born in the US or a spouse married to a US citizen.

I just discovered this channel a couple of weeks ago and enjoy it. I lived in Spain from 19984-89 and loved it. I can see from your videos how the culture has change since my time there (i was shocked to see men in shorts LOL). The one thing I would like to add is that you really want to enjoy a good Paella, then you must take the time to visit Valencia. My ex-father-in-law was from there and while visiting him I had many Paellas in restaurants, in the small towns and in country villas. The paella in Valencia (since its the provincial dish), IMO, is better nowhere else. Also, my suggestion is to do it during Fallas. The small towns in the area are having fiestas (smaller versions of Fallas) and many of them cook very large paellas for the entire community. These people have been cooking paellas for generations and they are without a doubt the very best you can eat. Funny story, I just attended a Paella cooking class. It had shrimp and chorizo. I told the chef that during my time in Spain, I had never seen a chorizo paella. Maybe its and Andalusian version, but I tend to think it was an Americanized version. LOL Keep up the good work as it gives me a fresh view, from the U.S. into the country that I miss dearly.

By the way, I know you are a Kiwi but you really sound Australian to me... I wanted to ask you if you have any videos on your channel or any contacts regarding student exchange. The only contacts I have in Spain are based in Barcelona but would prefer somewhere where the schools teach in castellano. My 13 and 12 year old boys have Spanish passports but can hardly articulate two sentences in Spanish, and we have decided that Duolingo is never going to teach them enough so we have decided to send them there. Any info you could provide would be much appreciated. Keep up the good work, you guys are great!

Learning Spanish since some time and being active in the community of language learning people. I realized that actually literally everyone who says you don't need to learn the grammar you can learn the language "like children do" only by listening and speaking with your very bad Spanish, all of them are not getting it done and not having any respectable level of language. I think this switch has to happen in your mind, yes you have to learn a new language and yes it is a lot of work, its never easy to learn a new language, but it does not affect you at all if you in love with that language and with culture and people of the country you would like to move in.

As far as banking and currency transfers, what about US banks that have branches in Spain, such Citibank, Chase (JP Morgan)…I do know that Citi allows account holders to transfer funds fee-free…but I I believe that the user needs to have accounts in both the US and Spain.

Spain and US banks are not very friendly. Find an independent money transfer service. Do not even think of cashing a US bank cheque here.

It can be challenging. Ideally you can speak Spanish or take someone who can and explain to them your finances. Or work with a relocation agent who provides these services.

Once I moved €14000 to Indonesia from ghetto Netherlands to pay off a home and it took 1 day and a phone call. That’s 13 months ago now so not at all a bad experience considering the problem was the Indonesian law asking what the money was about as a counter-terrorism law but not wise themselves

Hi! I think the only one that really works is the first way to transfer money. If you move and send 20k us dollars or similar, you could have problems with any method than bank to another bank account. I have my sister there since 16 years and she said if I want to invest in a small store, the only way is with legalized money, i cant just convert it to cripto. Cripto is a 4th way wich is better than the other 3 in that case. I couldnt make a bussiness but I could buy stuff for myself, pay the rent and live. What do you think? Is mandatory i could invest

We hired a company to do both the translations of the documents and the apostille now required in Canada. They sent the one document to the wrong place and after spending a fortune we now have to wait another 3 months for the federal government to process our document. Very frustrating and nope...they won't give the money back...To add insult to injury the government does not charge for the apostille process for that document.

Do EU immigrants wanting to stay long term need to speak with an immigration lawyer in your opinion? We need to understand how to manage our tax situation the best way possible but we don't need a VISA. Thanks for all your great content!

The one thing that is not clear to me is the wealth tax on worldwide assets. I’m looking to buy a in a small town / rural area within 1 to 4 hours or so from Barcelona, ideally. There are a lot of nice home for under €60k with 2 bedrooms/2 bathrooms, 90 square meters and up. Initially, I’d move to Spain (non-lucrative visa) but go back to the US every couple of months for 2-3 weeks. My wife would move to Spain once she retires from her US govt career in a few years. Here in the US, me and my wife own (mortgage) a home with a current market value of around $1.5 million. How would Spain tax this asset? Values change-can go down as well as up…
