Hey James, i recently (3 weeks ago) borrowed a ukulele from my friend, and i recently picked up my own proper one and i have fallen completely and madly in love with the instrument. I have picked up about 5 songs and learned them and im currently trying to get the hang of fingerpicking, so i was just wondering if you had 1 tip for a "semi new" player to improve, what would it be? Love your vids, exceptional quality and presentation

Dear James, greetings from Saigon! Your videos on this topic are truly great! I am trying to find the same concept for guitar but am struggling to find similar guidance. I would be very grateful if you could shed some light on videos or books on this topic/subject for guitar as all there are appears to focus on Jazz chord melody only. Thank you!

I love your videos and have been learning a lot from them. I don't want to be a pain, but I do have an issue with you on this one. The third chord that you are playing does not appear to be a D7. It appears to be an F#dim. I have checked every chord chart (e.g. Brian's Huge Chordlist for ukulele) and reference app at my disposal (e.g. Guitar Toolkit set on ukulele) and keep getting the same answer. Am I missing something?

Thanks James - I really like your videos. Regarding the strum you show in the end. I picked it up somewhere to do this strum by doing two strokes with index finger like this: index down, thumb down, index up. The first strum can be any of these. Would you say that the strum you show in the video has different characteristics?
@jameshillmusiq
@jameshillmusiq 8 жыл бұрын
+joka2966 There are a few variations on this strum, each with a slightly different feel and sound. The one you mention is notable because there are no fingernails involved so you're always getting the mellower sound of the finger pads. The one I showed has a fingernail strike on the thumb upstroke which gives it a little more sparkle and a slight syncopated accent. Subtle differences but differences nonetheless!

James, let's say that from my head, rather than from musical notation, I'm playing the melody of a tune on my uke. How do I find/create the proper chords to accompany the melody, without going through a gazillion chords in a reference book? Many thanks!

Excellent video, thanks. So the double up strum is a different way to do the "Triplet" with more nails?
@jameshillmusiq
@jameshillmusiq 8 жыл бұрын
+Zenfolio Zack Yes, you could use the double-up strum to do a triplet (i.e. where each beat is the same length) but in this case I'm using it to play a "long-short-short" rhythm.

On the double up technique, how is the clean division between the 2 'ups' accomplished at high speed? Is there some sort of other finger technique that's just too fast to see?
@TheVeronicarai
@TheVeronicarai 7 жыл бұрын
Hi James..when I speed up the strum, in the up stroke the index finger follows the thumb on every string..it doesn't happen that the thumb completes all four strings and then the finger starts the up strum. Is that how it is done? not sure if I was able to explain my question

I think no. Cause it will still create a sound. The goal is to mute it so the last melody will be heard.
