Hey (Weird) Coffee People, creator of the Filtru app here. It's great to have my work featured in James' video. Just wanted to mention that the Android app will be back! I'm just a solo developer working on this app so it takes me a little longer to bring all the useful features over to another platform. ❤

Thanks for a shoutout, James! We hope that all the weird coffee people watching your videos will have an easier way to find tasty coffee in Europe. You summarised the challenges of developing a Mobile App like ours pretty accurately. It's not something you build once-the database updates and communication with cafes are daily tasks of our team. It's both fun and frustrating. Donations are very appreciated, but they are a limited resource for costly mobile app development. We had to develop the ECT platform and content first to be able to work on something we dreamed of back in 2014. The biggest surprise for us, is that the app reaches very (normal) coffee people who would probably never watch videos on coffee KZbin ☕😅

I downloaded the app after watching this video. Here are my two suggestions in case you are interested: - It would be great if people could rate places as well as drinks they had so one could pick a place which makes great espresso even though their filter coffee is mediocre. - There are a lot of great coffee places that are missing in the app. I saw that there is a "Suggest a cafe" section but it looks like it doesn't work that well. I think you can pick some ambassadors all around the world for that. Of course these are rough ideas and they need to be analyzed further. Good luck.

On the cafe finder thing, recently i was in Mexico city and my brother in law got me a "Coffee Passport" Its a physical little paper booklet that you can get in any of the speciality coffee shops across the city that participate in the scheme. You get a stamp when you visit a coffee shop and that comes with some little benefits. 10% off your order, money off whole beans etc. It is a fantastic little thing and incentivises you to visit other shops and try their coffee. I think a quarter of my 23kg bag on the flight back was just coffee beans i had bought there 😂

There's a Coffee Route book for coffee shops in Cape Town that I got a while back, although I lived in Cape Town for over 30 years, I discovered at least 10 other coffee shops that I now go to regularly. It also has a "coffee passport" and pretty much every shop I went to the owners were chuffed that I discovered their place via the book.

Apparently I'm just gonna rec these to everyone with good taste in coffee-based games, but- "Little Corner Tea House" is an absolutely delightful mobile game with limited ads (no interstitials / banners, you only have to watch them if you want the rewards) where you make coffees and teas to order, as well as grow, ferment, and roast your own tea leaves. "Coffee Noir" is a mystery detective game where your character goes undercover as a new-in-town coffee roaster, and it's a surprisingly realistic management sim where you have to source good quality beans, decide what roasts to offer, and balance supply and demand. It's neat :)

I played both Coffee Talk games on my Xbox, largely because they're quite easy and if anyone else does Microsoft Rewards you'll know of the requirements to earn achievements for quests. The weirdest part of it (from a coffee POV, the story line is very odd) is that the same machine is used to make coffee, tea, hot chocolate and any other drink in the game.

Coffee talk is wonderful. I posted it in a comment elsewhere, but I highly recommend the mobile game "Little Corner Tea House". It's got similar "helping customers with their problems" mechanics, plus you get to grow, roast, and ferment your own tea leaves in addition to making lattes and such. It's SO delightful. If you like tycoon and/or mystery games, "Coffee Noir" is also really fun and a surprisingly realistic coffee roaster management simulator.

I want to admit the way James commented on the app price "It is for you to decide whether a couple of bucks are worth the experiment". It is genuinely important for influencers to remember that they are watched from a bunch of different places in the entire world and when someone decides for other people whether something is affordable or not is somewhat unpleasant. Thank you James for such a small but important thing.

Not an app you missed, but a point I think many will miss in this video: The experience with the bombardment of adds, and terribly unsatisfying free-to-play game at the end, are _deeply_ connected to the fact that you felt the need to excuse an app for costing £1.50. How easily do we (rightfully) spend that amount on coffee? To everyone: If you’re in a position to do so, _please_ pay for software from time to time. Either by buying it, or donating to open-source projects. Things like predatory "casino” games and surveillance capitalism thrives on us refusing to pay even negligible amounts of stuff we still use a lot…

App called "Best Coffee" is one I go for when travelling and exploring new coffee places. Yes, you can find occasional Black Sheep Coffee shops there but mostly you come across well established specialty coffee shops. Seen few stickers on the doors of a few too so seem like they do their research.

This was the evolution from the Blue Crow Coffee Map (physical copy) and then "London’s Best Coffee" application. I totally agree - more often than not great, I tend to need to check that places are open when they say they are, and dodging the very odd additions like Black Sheep Coffee but otherwise used weekly (and now international too but with less cafes locations)

Grind size was (and probably still is) the hardest thing to master. The app that has the best grind size suggestion for your specific grinder and coffee, would be the one to use. I don't know of any as of yet that do that

There is a game called “Coffee Inc 2” that is more of a business simulator than coffee making game but it was incredible. I was hoping you’d share it in your video but seems it didn’t cross your radar.

I have aeromatic installed even though I don't often use an aeropress, because it is the best resource I have found for translating grind settings between grinders. For example if I know this person's V60 recipe says about 40 clicks on a Comandante or 17 on an Encore or whatever I can figure out that that's 85 on my Kingrinder K6 (these numbers are all made up but you get the idea). There may be another resource for that and it's not the most straightforward to do in Aeromatic but it works fairly well to put in the grind setting and grinder you know and then switch to the grinder you want to know.

Not really a coffee person, I've just been binging your channel a bunch this week, but an app I used to spend far too much time on was a game called 'my cafe: recipes & stories'. It's one of those simultaneously slightly irritating yet addictive story type games but you got to actually make your little avatar go to machines and jars to make all the recipes and (at least back when I played it circa 2018ish) there were loads of characters and not a ridiculous number of ads (though, like all free-to-play games it did kinda push in-app purchases a bit)

I use brewmaster every day. When I brew coffee at home and in my job as a barista. The reason being that I am almost blind and normal timers do not work for me. This app allows me to have the wait time and current step read out loud to me in real time I have worked together with the guy Stephen to improve some screen reader features for the blind and visually impaired. I also use Filtru but find it a bit harder to navigate But until the new update comes around on brewmaster, this is my go to. I also use it to weigh beans and food in general and everything like that

Hi James, I am coming out of that middle phase of my coffee journey that you mentioned, the part where it feels unnecessary to record everything. At the same time, I also stopped my coffee subscription in order to devote more time to shopping for specific beans from an ever-changing list of roasters.

JAMES!! James I have a coffee-related game that I think you would ACTUALLY like! It's called "Little Corner Tea House," and while it's mostly focused on teas, you can also make various coffees in it! As a former barista and current tea/coffee nerd, I find it legitimately delightful.

Not seen this, but an app to recommend and rate green coffees from different sources would be very useful. Think of it like the numerous books rating and characterizing wines form every vineyard and vintage. Knowing the flavor profiles of different estates plus quality and recommended roasting profiles would be great.

I was pondering what grind size with my 1Zpresso J would be for an aeropress and was turned onto "aeromatic" which is the filtru app but specifically for the aeropress. The thing I liked (and downloaded it) for was that you can select what grinder you're using in the recipe section and it will tell you how many clicks to match the specified grind level. Very helpful for giving me a baseline to work from!

One that just came up in my feed. Nerdforge has a video you might enjoy. She installs a coffee machine and grinder into a very large computer case and uses an Arduino controller for one touch brewing. It's kinda interesting. I think it's the kind of project that's right up your alley!

Probably the best coffee-themed game to play on your phone is Coffee Roaster, which is a brilliant adaptation of the solo boardgame of the same name. It is paid, but ad free, deep, challenging, and a different puzzle each time. Would highly recommend. Plus, dripping with genuine, beautiful, coffee theme!

Seeing these has made me realize how low maintenance I am. I try to get better than supermarket coffee, grind fresh, but I just dump the same weight of coffee into the bottom of a french press, fill it, stir after the bloom, and let it sit for around 15 minutes. I can't imagine needing an app to teach me how to make coffee.
