Wife recently bought a Vertuo for our Airbnb. After years of me brewing a pourover with my EKG and Acaia Pearl through a Kalita wave, I tried the vertuo… initially repulsed by the quality of bean but fascinated by the “crema”. The texture really makes you keep sipping. Had two cups first day for that reason…okay maybe it was really fun to push the button too. Next day came back for more to feel that fluffy texture… fast forward three weeks and an Amazon order of refills later and I haven’t made one pourover. Vertuo is mine indefinitely. With three little kids it’s so damn convenient I find myself 100% willing to pass on the usual quality in my pourovers. Have just been adding a splash of heavy cream to the coffee and I’m good. Never thought I’d say any of this. I feel like this was my confession in an AA meeting that I’ve cheated on my pourovers.

I just upgraded from this machine, I got it for Christmas and I'd say it's a good introduction to espresso. Double capsules did the job for quick morning lattes. Did not like the larger coffee capsules (very watered down coffee taste). I now have a bambino and it's a big step up but also costs a lot more (double when you get a grinder) and requires more work in the morning. Pods averaged to $1 or so per coffee and the grounds I get from our local shop is maybe 0.70 per cup, so a little price savings and you get the freedom to choose what grounds you want. All in all of you want quick espresso for lattes in the morning without learning what a portafilter is - Nespresso isn't a bad choice

James hits it spot on - it’s about keeping a captive audience. I bought a Vertuo machine because I wanted the convenience of the pods and the recyclability system. I had a standard Nespresso for a few years and was feeling guilty about all the plastic (I bought the cheap pods) I was wasting. I was happy with the Vertuo (when it was working - got two warranty replacement machines in the first year), but when my two teenage sons starting drinking coffee regularly, my Nespresso coffee ransom increased exponentially. The coffee itself was fine; not much variation in actual taste between the different pods, but fine. The last straw for me was when in two successive orders they cancelled the first because one of the 12 coffee pack I ordered was out of stock, then on the second order they lost it in shipping (not their fault but I need my coffee and that was the only way to get it)! So after living with my emergency French press for a while, I bought a new Phillips 3200 automatic espresso maker that grinds the beans and everything (I’m lazy about my coffee). Now I can buy whatever coffee I want and it actually tastes like a different coffee. And it is much cheaper and much better. Don’t let the $800+/- price tag stop you - the payback between that and the coffee is about a year for me over a Vertuo, and I am free of corporate subservience to Nespresso (and reducing waste).

When I first took on the Rio de Janeiro contract, the Rio office had a coffee lady that used a selection of high end Italian espresso makers to make coffee however you liked, she would track your preferences and when you were expected in the office and your coffee would be on your desk as you sat down. Latee, they changed the machines to some vending like machine that you could select various types of coffee by buttons, I guess similar to the machine McDonald's started to use, they still had the lady for awhile but eventually wound up laying her off and expecting everyone to use the machine themselves. Of course the US office just had drip Bunn coffee til I brought in a Nespresso at which point every ex-pat flocked to my area, various individuals undertook the ordering of the capsules for the office themselves and as the company provided free bottled water (and sodas), we just filled it with bottled water. I still miss having the coffee lady and just magically having a perfect cup placed in front of me exactly whenever I wanted a coffee just as I thought I might want one.

I worked at a company where they had a Nespresso Vertuo, and it felt gloriously convenient (when the company was paying for it) to make a decent, repeatable, consistent cup of coffee. Much better than instant, although that is like saying that eating a chocolate cake is better than eating an onion. Then, though, I started going out and visiting our clients. One in particular, based in Amsterdam, had a commercial espresso machine, burr grinder, filtered water, and a member of staff who was willing to take a few minutes to show me how to use it. They became my favourite customer to visit, and the Nespresso was no longer quite so special.

I have an original Nespresso pod system. I love it. Super easy, super consistent and it tastes great. I tried the virtuo system in the store...and I'm not a fan of the big coffee...and didn't see the point in upgrading for regular espresso shots. So there we are.

@patrikahlberg37103 жыл бұрын
As a lay person who loves the original nespresso-system, the "why" of vertuo seems obvious. Nespresso must hate how other brands steals their customers by making cheaper capsules for the original, so that people buy those instead of the actual nespresso capsules. With vertuo, there are no competitors, and I am guessing because of some patent on the bar-reading on these capsules or something. This theory is strenghtened by the fact that nespresso gives away vertuo-machines from time to time, if you buy 300 vertuo-capsules. They want you in their vertuo system so that you are stuck buying expensive original capsules. That said, the product might very well be good. It might even fit som people better. But as for the "why", those are my thoughts.

While lock-in was no doubt on the minds of some at Nespresso, another "problem" to solve, was the American market. Particularly the American office market. Which was/is pretty much entirely owned by Keurig. Americans simply wouldn't go for tiny pods making exclusively tiny cups of coffee. Vertuo is, conceptually, a tour de force as an office machine. Or at least would be, if they were as reliable as Keurig machines.... No need for anyone to know which button to press for "their" size. No need for two pods to get a desired size coffee (or 4, to get a Starbucks sized one....). No need to worry about whether a pod is ground for a "Lungo" sized cup or an "Espresso" sized one. Just intuitively pick the pod of the size and type you want, and the machine does the rest. No coffee knowledge required. All very intuitive. And the coffee is good (weird foam or not). Nestle may not be every 3rd waver's favorite company, but they have some serious combined Coffee IQ on staff, and more resources than anyone. A $200 pod machine won't come equipped with James and his Decent hidden away inside, but just like with their original line, they pick and roast and grind and package remarkably good coffee, given the limitations of the pods and machines they have to work with.

I enjoyed your entire video, and have used the vertuo for over 5 years, after exploring the blending game thoroughly. Here is what I learned. Just like race cars, the best will cost you the most in education, time, money and engineering. At the top there are dedicated, even passionate, competitors arguing minute points I will never care about. Quarterly by computer I order my capsules. The have a variety, send me new ones to sample for free, are never " roasting tomorrow", and deliver to my front door within two days, for free, and I never have to deal with a new hire expert with attitude. Like new camera models, coffee beans, grinders, and machines can easily get into the thousands, require a masters degree to set and operate, and require extended time for cleanup, and maintenance. Not to brag, but I paid about $100 bucks for the vertuo, plugged it in, have cleaned it three times inside in five years, total time under 2 hours. I fill the water and throw the used capsules in the trash. The outside gets cleaned when the counter gets wiped down. I'm over 80 now and don't like to take on anything challenging til after 11am. My machine doesn't open and close with a button like yours. When mine dies, assuming I out live it, I'll get the push button model.

This is all very, VERY true. The convenience and ease of use is a staggeringly large selling point that is often overlooked. Can better coffee be had? Almost certainly, no matter the drinker. It has been a number of years, way back when Nespresso first introduced the Vertro into the North American market. The early machines did not heat the water sufficiently resulting in lukewarm coffee. Couple that with the bulky packaging of the pods compared to the classic pods. The machine was returned to the store. At least with the Nespreso original pod format, the patent has ended allowing third party coffee pods to the market. My impression was that Nespresso needed a new format in order to retain a monopoly during its patent.

I have a Nespresso Vertuo machine. It makes a decent coffee. They mention in the instructions that you can mix the foam into the drink with a spoon for a smoother taste and it does make a big difference in the taste. For a quick cup that is worlds better than a Keurig or anything like that, it wins hands down. Mine doesn't have a motorized lid like that though. I have to close and lock the lid manually on my model. And as long as I have had it, it's still fun to watch it eat the used pods.

@KingJerod3 жыл бұрын
@@DrFearCo Not sure how you got that math. Nespresso pods are $1.10 each. $33 per month for coffee for 1 person, $400 per year, $120 for the machine. Two years in, Nespresso costs $920, less than half that $2500 machine. With two people drinking coffee everyday it's $1720. The pods are made of aluminum and suppose to be fully recyclable (unlike Keurig).
@DrFearCo3 жыл бұрын
@@KingJerod You are delusional if you think that they are actually being recycled in any significant numbers. And most households have more than one person. And Nespresso coffee sucks... It's not even close to any sort of specialty coffee. This is coming from someone who drank 3 Nespresso coffees a day for like 5 years. The coffee quality does not compare for a slightly larger upfront cost and break even of around 2 years and about the same amount of effort for the benefits already presented. I understood the tech wehn I bought it and the machine overall has a cool techy factor at a relatively low price. 2. I had tried the coffee at a friend's house and got quite attached to 2 particular flavors. That couple are coffee fanatics so I got to try a ton of coffee brewed several ways at their house one weekend I stayed over. 3. The sheer convenience and lack of anything to clean up just makes life easier if even by a fraction.

Cheers! My friend just pointed me at your channel- its great! Now I happen to have a Vertuo- and I do like the "fluffiness." Now that said, let me add one of the big reasons why I got this device. I love the convenience of the "pod" coffee makers - but unlike others I didn't want the pollution of all that plastic. Aluminum is very recyclable... HOWEVER it is VERY recyclable the way I use it- I refill the pods, put a foil sticker on top and basically "roll my own." So when I have a batch of used ones, I peal off the foil- compost the coffee- rinse- let dry- fill with 12.5g of super fine coffee of my choice- foil up the top- and I'm ready to go- and you can do this over and over and over again. Now I tried "rolling my own" with the other type of pressure into a pod systems- and it never works well; water spirts, grinds go into tubes they shouldn't... never works well... BUT this with the low pressure spinny-spinny thing works perfectly for home rolled pods EVERY TIME. Also this brews way faster IMO than those pressure pod systems. So my bottom line is - its FAST, its convenient, its environmentally friendly (the way I do it) AND I can use my own coffee and not get stuck with a proprietary line... I love it.

Bought the virtuo for fast, easy, not crappy coffee. I had an espresso machine with an attached foam wand. It was loud, messy, took a while to make multiple espressos, and I hated dealing with the coffee grounds. Now I pop in the pod, pop milk in an aerator, and I recycle the pods through Nespresso so I don't feel as bad for the environment. I did recently buy a reusable, metal Nespresso Virtuo compatible pod (not made by Nespresso) and a coffee grinder. Now I can brew whatever coffee I want in the machine! I wanted a quick, easy, half decent coffee because Kurig coffee makes me sad. That's exactly what is does! I don't have to cry at the office Kurig or stop at a coffee shop on my way to work. If you want a hint of sweetness, try adding a bit of vanilla creamer to the cup before brewing the coffee, just enough that it covers most of the bottom of the mug. When it brews out the coffee foam first, the creamer will mix in with the coffee foam, and stay attached to it. When it is done brewing and you mix in the coffee foam and creamer it will dissolve and mix in such a way that the creamer is very evenly dispersed throughout the coffee. At first I thought this was a video from years ago somehow getting another run on KZbin. I've had this machine for years now...its actually quite wonderful. The numerous flavor varieties and variations in serving sizes available is very appealing. Very good coffee...and yes...a unique machine but nonetheless a welcome addition on my counter. Most come with a milk frother for hot or cold milk / half & half / oat milk etc. Delicious coffee at home.

I just found this video and thought I'd answer the question: We have a Vertuo machine. We have it mostly for the convenience and speed of making coffee. A point of interest to you may be that we actually don't like the foam at all and scoop it off before adding milk to the actual coffee. When we have more time, we use a french press instead, which frankly I like more because I can choose the coffee beans that I use and like the result a lot better. But, for convenience the Nespresso does a good job, albeit with a bit of a price tag. To highlight your point of "locking the customer in", our first Vertuo machine died and after troubleshooting with Nespresso over the phone they declared it dead and offered to replace it at no charge. The obvious assumption is that because we were spending hundreds of dollars per year on coffee pods, it was a no-brainer to keep us in the family so to speak by sending a replacement machine for free.

This video has been incredibly enlightening in helping me grasp the inner workings of the brewing process in these machines. I've always been intrigued by what goes on inside the brew unit, especially considering how the coffee grounds appear so dense, almost like instant coffee. It's also surprising how a small quantity of grounds can yield such a flavorful result. I used to believe that air played a role in creating the crema, but this video has shown me the true "blending" process, and it's absolutely fascinating. I genuinely feel like I've learned something new today, thanks to this video. It's amazing how much there is to discover about these machines and the craftsmanship behind them. I've even attempted a few repairs on similar machines myself, and more often than not, it's the entire brew assembly that causes issues. It can be quite disheartening when sourcing specific parts becomes a challenge, and sometimes the only option available is purchasing an expensive complete brew assembly. It's evident that the manufacturers don't make it easy for us to repair these machines. Nevertheless, I admire the determination of those of us who refuse to give up and continue to find alternative solutions. It's a testament to our passion for keeping these machines running and reducing unnecessary waste. Though the path to repair may be filled with obstacles, it's the commitment and resourcefulness of individuals like us that drive us forward. I sincerely appreciate the effort put into creating this enlightening video. It has not only expanded my understanding but also inspired me to keep exploring and tinkering with these machines. Your insights and expertise are truly invaluable. Here's to all the repair enthusiasts out there who, with humility and dedication, strive to extend the life of these machines. Thank you!

I just bought one. I was a little tired after years of grinding my coffee, using an Aeropress, heating the water, I needed a break. This makes a worse cup of coffee than my other methods, but it is by no means bad, plus it is extremely convenient. I suspect in the near future I will end up using my Aeropress and my vertuo depending just on how much time I have
@atavax60943 жыл бұрын
which pods do you drink? I brewed coffee, usually either from my aeropress or a cheap percolator. My parents have a vertuo I use sometimes but I always find the coffee tastes unpleasant and harsh.
@Oilfieldscout3 жыл бұрын
The bane of the Aeropress is its simplicity. It makes a really good cup. And we go off trying other things and come back to it. The only other machine on the counter is a Piccola ESE machine I picked up off EBay and get some great sharp, nicely bitter Napoli pods when my taste bends that way.

This is it. It's probably easier than instant 'coffee' which we all know is rank. Yes, nespresso vertuo might not be the highest level ever reached but it serves a purpose.
@Oilfieldscout3 жыл бұрын
@@thebrowns5337 most instants will gag a maggot off a gut wagon. However, there are some decent ones out of Mexico that are good, when made correctly. Put the coffee powder in cool water to dissolve then add heated water @170-175. Put in or pour with 200 degree water and it is rank.

I got a chance to try this machine out while staying at my in-laws last week. I thoroughly enjoyed the coffee each day. I loved the ease of use, and the predictability of each cup. But, I think I also value variety a little bit more. I prefer to change up the type of coffee I drink
@armandogarciar2 жыл бұрын
I think you can even buy the pods by unit, at least looks like that on the app. If so, that is nice since you don't need to by coffee in large quantities if you just want to try some variety.

I get a nice oxygen-aerated coffee "crema" when I make shaken espresso martinis with Moka Pot coffee. I've been doing 1:1:1 rum, coffee liqueur, and coffee.

Nice to see your view. I have a few friends that wouldn't do without that machine. Personally, I think it provides a decent cup of coffee when I visit those friends and a big step up from a Keurig machine or a cheap coffee maker. I would never buy that machine for myself because I prefer my own home brew from fresh ground beans at a fraction of the cost and I prefer a little real cream over foam. I drink so much coffee that the pods would cost a fortune.

Great video so I thought I’d leave my thoughts with you. I have a Nespresso vertuo machine for about 3/4 months now. I am not your everyday coffee drinker but when I want a coffee I do not want to be having the crap ready made powders or having to do the filtering process. So for me this machine was perfect, as it is cheap (compared) to the other high-end machines, it is quick and easy to use which also tastes good. Back to price point, the machine in the end only cost me about £25/£30 after you calculate all the cost of the “free” items they throw in the offer. And for someone who does not drink coffee everyday, for 50p (on average) per capsule is very affordable compared to the price of London coffee shops. When I worked out the actual cost of the machine it did make me think that why is the actual technology so cheap - I think you’ve answered it 😃. I should mention I am no coffee connoisseur but I would never be able to replicate a coffee like the vertuo nor would I have the time or patience to do so.

I have owned a 2 different Vertuo machines. Got the first one in 2018. I do love the coffee. We have tried 18 of the different pods. Favorites are Intenso, Congo, Stormio, Odasio. - we mainly like the more bold grinds. Two things I do not like about it - only being able to get the coffee from Nespresso OR Starbucks versions at Target or Walmart and the fact that their flavored coffees are pretty mildly flavored. So the Peppermint Pinwheel is very mildly minty, not as minty as Starbucks. Their chocolate pods are not very chocolate-y. Otherwise I love it.
