Anyone can work hard at being an artist...years of study in art schools, studio practice, etc. and never, ever be authentic. Then there are people like Bill Traylor, who, with no training, can almost spontaneously generate really, really sophisticated art work from.....who the heck knows? Where does it come from? Absolutely fantastic in its quality and mysterious in its origins. His work is reminiscent of Greek urns, cave paintings, Art Brut, Klee, Picasso...simultaneously modern and ancient, and always, always fresh. Wow...thanks for this video, James.

When we humans become elders, the past often becomes immediate. I think it is that simple and that complex. His gift, which had as far as we know been hidden, became a means of expressing that immediacy. His work is extraordinarily beautiful and indeed each is an act of grace.

Thank you James and Kate! I have been binge watching your videos and using the inspiration in my own practice as an artist. I hope to one day travel to Brooklyn and see the art and meet the artists myself, that’s the dream. James monologues are simply amazing, I learn so much more than any art book just listening to James. He comes across as someone I would love to know and meet!

it feels and is so authentic because it is. I feel as these works were never made for the desire for recognition, but were simply made as an expression of time had. It's hard to understand why they were made, the motivation to make them, and that makes these works so interesting.

As an artist, I myself have gone through this issue, why to paint, for recognition? While our celebrity culture has for the last more than one hundred years made everything into a commercial enterprise, ultimately, all art, or the best art, is done by the artist to express important thoughts and feelings. and that it is all.

Great coverage, I discovered Bill Traylor in the early 90’s reading Art in America or Art News when the Outsider Art movement was first being discussed.

What a remarkable artist, thank you for enlightening me. Bill's work in some ways reminds me of Alfred Wallis. For people who don't know Wallis, he was a Cornish fisherman who started painting around the same time as Bill. His work depicts his life at sea and was discovered when the St Ives group was flourishing. ☮🎨

thank you so much, what a wonderful artist and exhibition, wonderful that it has been preserved, I also paint and draw on scraps, as more and more do these days, but was unaware that it had started so long ago, logical I guess that it would have. The date you mentioned at the beginning was 1939, not 1839, btw.
