I find they often are clearly looking for things to complain about and find fault with. Especially when the exact same complaints could be made against the iPhone or Galaxy.

@@AndrewKwabula they most likely are. But that no more makes it true or correct. Then they are pandering to the general person who knows nothing about cameras and photography. Review something properly........don't bullshit by pandering to an audience.
@AndrewKwabula3 жыл бұрын
@@Sabundy Exactly. It's interesting that most of them "are professional" reviewers. That's why this reviewer is unique. On the point and shoot he clearly gives it to the iPhone but is clear that if you know something manual settings you get better results with Sony and he goes on to show the difference. So no device is advantaged, just says it as it is. This way people can make informed choices. Since 2004 I have been with Sony Ericsson transitioned into Sony. I was about to make my Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium the last Sony as I wanted to get a Huawei or Samsung but this video changed that, my next phone is Sony Xperia 1 x.

I have had my SONY Xperia 1 mark ii for about over 1 month now and I absolutely love it. The screen is stunning, the design and build are both quality and class. The camera system is a revelation imho. I love the degree of manual control it has. It's pretty much akin to driving a stick shift sports car as opposed to an automatic. Like the sports car...the SONY camera has a learning curve, but it's simply more fun to use, can be pushed more, and allows for more creativity.
@JamesLavish4 жыл бұрын
Great to hear! And I love the fact that Sony is taking the opposite direction with their approach to the innovation (Control vs CI). It's brilliant, IMO.
@Sabundy4 жыл бұрын
@@JamesLavish Agreed. Imho SONY seems to have finally figured out the right direction for their mobile division. With the 21.9 aspect ratio, and this camera system I feel they have at least a somewhat different user experience with their phones now (in terms of media consumption and taking photos, and filming video). Which I think is quite important given just how cookie cutter most phones are looking these days with them mostly offering the same experience. This camera system on the Xperia 1 mark ii is not "better" than an iphone, Huwaei, or Samsung.....but it is their equal and far more importantly it is different from the other brands. It really offers a different user experience. Which again is vitally important in an overcrowded market with everyone more or less looking to do the same. Thus I think offering a different user experience in the key areas that people use their phones for is actually a really smart move by SONY.
@JamesLavish4 жыл бұрын
Exactly! The hardware of the Sony is fantastic. I prefer their chipset to Samsung's, in fact (larger pixels in a better sensor). The computational imaging may catch up later, but the Alpha-like features are far ahead of the other systems. This control is executed in a way that third party apps cannot achieve so seamlessly with the other phones. I'm am quite satisfied and pleased with this approach by Sony. And the other features, as you say, the 21:9 aspect, creator mode, etc, are unique and attractive.
@Sabundy4 жыл бұрын
@@JamesLavish Preferring SONY's image sensors is just a sign of knowing what you are talking about. SONY is the world leader in image sensors and image processors. They have 70% of the smartphone market,and 50% of the global market for all image sensors. Their image sensors are so good that they can and do charge more than double for them than what Samsung can sell theirs for. Also, the demand is so high for SONY's image sensors that they literally cannot make enough of them to keep up with demand. As for the Computational photography.....that will creepy into the Xperias too. The benefit of SONYs position is that they have their pro camera 📸 Alpha division (heavily involved with Xperia now) and so all the cool stuff in those cameras can trickle down to the Xperias :)
@JamesLavish4 жыл бұрын
Precisely my thinking... Phase One, Hasselblad, Fuji GFX...all medium formats with Sony sensors, yes! And this: "...the demand is so high for SONY's image sensors that they literally cannot make enough of them to keep up with demand." The integration of the Alpha system/software is a huge plus to me.

I miss the references to the limitations or issues in this review. The display is too dark to see anything in the sunlight with the Pro apps. The CinemaPro app can only be used in situations with constant brightness, the exposure is not readjusted. And my Sony Xperia 1 II had lost the purple color on the back and was fixed by the service. The Sony takes very good pictures, I like that, the results is like "what you see" and no HDR overdetailed funky super duper look. And it is fast, with the Samsung S20 Ultra i was not able to make one perfect shot, with the Sony, it is easy.
@JamesLavish4 жыл бұрын
Great points Matthias, thank you for bringing them up. I too find the screen too dim to operate the Pro apps in full sunlight outside. And hopefully Sony updates the software for the Cinema Pro app to include a variable ISO or Shutter Speed to compensate for dynamic exposure changes. But yes, we are limited until then. And I too like the more natural feel of the photos from the Xperia... I have the black version of the phone...Let's see if that fades. 😉✌

I know this is a late entry, but I think it's worth a mention. The Xperia 1ii has proven to be a very good phone. Perfect for photography and videography. But there is a problem which people need to be aware of especially as the Xperia 1iii has been released. (It may still apply) Cinema pro records very good video but, unless you are lucky enough to have Adobe premiere, you will have a problem All the android movie editing apps will give you washed and out over exposed results. I asked a forum about it and ,in the reply he said "You need to use a player/editor that supports HDR using HLG Data." He said worryingly "I've not had great success in editing the cinema pro files on Android tbh" So basically you can only view the files using the cinema pro app if you want to see the correct result. Editing the files as they are (unless you have an expensive editor like premiere) is a no go. I've had a very frustrating time with this, I've been through loads of apps all with the same problem. Not happy not being able to edit my files. Also, Unfortunately there's been no mention of this problem on any of the KZbin reviews. If anyone has any positive help with this I would be grateful.

very detailed and great review. What about low light situations or during night ?
@JamesLavish4 жыл бұрын
Hey Rajashekhar, it's OK at night with the regular camera app, but because Sony hasn't yet caught up in the CI area, the Xperias definitely don't perform as well as the Pixels and iPhones yet for that quick late evening or night photo. The ability for those phones to instantly bracket a clean photo is pretty impressive. That said, if you take the time and dial in the correct exposure on the Photo Pro app, especially with a RAW file, you can get some excellent results (as demonstrated in the boots shot in the video), and it will be much more natural and realistic than a computer augmented photo. So it really depends on what you would use it for: landscapes and cityscapes with lots of patience and plenty of time, maybe a tripod? I'd go Sony; quick family snapshots? Hard to beat the Pixel and iPhone there. Hope this helps!

Great review James, I think this phone will be my next acquisition. Best camera review I came across for Sony 1 ii. A lot of DSLR features which I like, almost total manual control. It's a beauty.
@JamesLavish3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a ton Dan, super appreciated! Yep, it's got a lot of great features for those who like to have a bit more control!
@TKEarly093 жыл бұрын
How is the ui of the photo pro App, if you shoot images vertical? Is the frame on the top and the rest of the controls on the bottom of the screen? How many burst shots you can take until the buffer fills up and the 20 fps drops down? How did you classify the Phone for low light shots in comparison to the pixel night sight feature?

Hi James. Is Lightroom your weapon of choice for getting the best out of raw files?
@JamesLavish4 жыл бұрын
Hey Charlie, I use LR for everything but portraits/fashion, as I am sometimes tethered and Capture One is seamless for this. Also, the Raw files are converted to a much closer proximity to my liking with photos of people, so it is faster for processing those types of files. Otherwise, yes, LR it is!

Doing God's work my guy; love your style and passion for photography and the implementation. Would happily watch many more of these! Thanks! Have any updates changed or improved anything since shooting the video? Would also be interested if you found anything else out, as I've far more faith in your understanding than anyone else I've found I have to say.

Hi! Thanks for the great review! Does it allow both manual settings for ISO and shutter speed in the manual mode? Does it have autobracketting option? Can you do a comparison with pro mode capabilities of S20+ (or ultra) pls (sorry if I ask a lot) ? Thanks.
@JamesLavish4 жыл бұрын
Hi Anne! Great questions: yes for ISO and SS in manual mode; no autobracketing mode yet .. maybe software update? I hope?? Pro vs S20: I will see if I can get my hands on a Samsung, but I do not have one ... Thank you!

@JamesLavish3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! And the night mode is working pretty well yes. I would not put it on par with the iPhone 12 quite yet, but it’s definitely pretty darned good.

*I have the Xperia 1 or Xperia 1 Mark I and I can do the most amazing things with this device that all the people who see with their various devices are enchanted by the size of the quality! Me and I am very happy for my acquisition but now seeing this Xperia 1 Mark II I believe Sony has made an even bigger show! All you have to do is learn how to use the device to get the results that no other can or could achieve!*

I also have the Xperia 1 (Mk I). The back cameras are very good but the front one needs improvement. I hope they improved it on the Mk II.

@@mvisperas I learned how to make some settings to be able to use better and get the best results! Nowadays I'm even preferred it than the other tops of the line I have at hand though! I'm adore wanting to buy the Xperia 1 Mark II here in Brazil but here is quite difficult due to import because of COVID-19 and high costs due to international monetary exchange.
@JamesLavish4 жыл бұрын
It's better but not as good as the Pixel or iPhone as far as my experience this far...FYI!
@mvisperas4 жыл бұрын
@@JamesLavish I guess to make it better, they have to use larger lens on the FFC. I normally just use the back camera when doing selfie on the Mk I. The face detection and eye tracking keeps the pic in focus.

I picked the original Xperia 1 nearly a year ago for it's camera and storage capabilities alone (moving from an old iPhone) and I love it. Is it worth upgrading to the Xperia 1 ii for the video camera side changes alone?
