Atari Jaguar (Part 2) - Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN)

The Atari Jaguar is host to a lineup of games that range wildly in quality. Some games are well-constructed and can be enjoyable, such as Alien vs. Predator and Tempest 2000. However, a majority of them do not fall into this category, and we are "treated" to the likes of a Mortal Kombat knockoff known as "Kisumi Ninja" and a game lacking any semblance of logic known as "Mutant Penguins." Terrible games like these helped contribute to the extinction of Atari's mighty 64-bit feline.
So how will the Nerd fair against this barrage of bad games? Will he be able to survive with his sanity intact? Or will he succumb to the madness? And will he learn how to fly? Watch and find out now!

Revisiting old AVGN episodes, this one is a classic. I'd completely forgotten about the part where the cat fights the Jaguar cube. I love how you can kind of see the laser pointer he used to make the cat run around. Details like that are why James' videos are so charming.

The reason Doom on Jaguar is silent is because the developers used the sound chip to make the game possible. Because of this however, they couldn't use the sound chip for music anymore (since the chip qas already busy trying to help run the game), so they left out the music. I can't remember what exactly the sound chip got used for instead, but I do know it was something integral to the game actually working on the Jaguar, so I guess it was a worthy sacrifice.

Either way, I'm with the camp of trying out some other checks before trashing. And even then, I think trashing any electronics is a waste when you can do salvage. FYI, when inserting a CD - DON'T push down on the spindle as shown at 11:46. That can damage it. With this system, you just set the disc around the spindle, it's not meant to be pressed down like that. Not saying this was the problem, but it can cause problems. RIP Boo.

That defeats the entire purpose of the rating. It's there to warn parents before the game is even purchased, so once you have the game home and are playing it, another lock is redundant. That'd be like buying an R-rated DVD, then needing to enter a code to uncensor the profanity and nudity.

Once John Carmack (the lead programmer of id software) said that they used the second processor (which was mostly used for sound or graphics) of the jaguar for the collision detection in doom, just because the main processor it's working at 100% while rendering the in-game graphics (thats why the music only plays in the intermission of the levels). It's funny, because I think this is the only port of doom that was in fact coded by Id software themselves.

No, it’s not the only one. The other one is the Doom port in Doom 3 BFG Edition for the PS3 (but only the PS3, the XBox360 Version reused the older XBox360 Arcade Port)

@@MabuseXX To my understanding, even the ones in BFG edition weren't directly ID's but rather ports of the previous Xbox editions to PS3 (don't quote me on that though). I do know that the Jaguar version served as the basis for every other console port until the original Xbox port of Ultimate Doom though, hence why in the SNES, 32X, 3DO, PSX, Saturn, and GBA ports all have the same truncated levels as the Jaguar version.

Secular Ascetic no. For the BFG version they themselves reprogrammed Doom1 on base of the Doom3 engine....but only in the PS3 version. I read an interview with Carmack about this.
