Also just like the number of bits that a processor is does not fully indicate how good the processor is because a 32-bit processor with 4 gigs of memory could conceivably be better than a 64-bit processor with 4 gigs of memory 1440p screen could conceivably be better in some other ways than a 4K screen.

The Jaguar was pretty ambitious for the time. The technology just wasn't there yet and it lacked third party support because it was way too difficult and expensive to program. If it came out a few years later, it probably would've been a massive success.

Graphics aren't necessarily important, but aesthetics *are* important. After all, most of the information you're getting while playing a game is visual; that part should at least look decent. Shovel Knight doesn't have great graphics persay, but it looks good, which actually is important.

The Jaguar was a prime example of some computer science: Bits don't mean graphics. All bits mean is the "word size" of the system, meaning how many bits (1s and 0s) it considers to be one unit of memory. When we are talking about very low bits, like 8, you can't make very big numbers of complex patterns in the memory, so you have to resort to some tricks to do complex things. It also limits how much memory the system can have, since a pointer to a location of memory is a system integer, so the more bits you have, the higher numbers the pointer can take on, and the more memory you can have. 64-bit is as high as a computer system needs to go, because a 64-bit number is freaking huge, 64-bits can represent any written character in the world and 64-bit integers can point to any amount of RAM you are likely to have for a long time. And that is about it for bits. But how powerful a system is is much more than that. Graphics are determined by video memory, GPU speed, architecture and other things. Same with sound.
@Dan-di9jd
@Dan-di9jd 6 ай бұрын
The problem was the GPU was only 32-bits, but everything else may have been 8-16-32 or 64 bits depending on where the data is going. So that means when you want to do a gpu command, you'd have to downgrade the information from 64 bits to 32 bits chunks or vice versa you might have to convert a 8 bit memory value and upscale it to 32 bits. It makes it really difficult to program something when you don't know whether a data piece is 8, 16, 32, or 64 bits so I imagine the developers probably just stuck with the lowest common denominator and that probably meant the entire system wasn't running at what the hardware makers intended for it to be. If it had more developer support, chances are some development companies would probably make some pretty cool games for it kind of like what happened to the N64/PS1 era where developers could make some cool games based on the limitation of the hardware.

To be fair, Star Fox had its own coprocessor built into the cartridge, because the SNES alone couldn't do graphics like that. Also, I would say that while the artwork might not have made great use of it, you can definitely tell in the games you showed that the graphics were higher quality than the Genesis and SNES - but maybe that's only apparent if you're familiar with the specific limitations of those consoles, since the best games were careful to play to their strengths.

Reality check: Bits are everything. 32 bit operating systems on PC can only address around 4GB of memory (simply put, a bit is a 'switch', either a 1 or a zero) with 4 bits, you can count to 2 to the power of 4, or 16 (normally the amount of colors you can display at once, and the largest number can be processed). With 8 bits, that's 256 colors. With 16, that's far far more. In PC terms, if you want more than 3 GB of memory, you absolutely need a 64 bit operating system and a CPU to match. Realistically, at 64 bits you can count to an enormous number and don't really need much more. It also defines how much throughput you can have, how many switches can be processed in a single clock cycle.

4:00 Here is your answer to what a bit is. Bit stands for Binary Digit and it is a singular piece of data (or datum, to be precise). A bit can either be 0 or 1. And they can be strung together to make a long series of 1s and 0s. But why this is important? Because machine code - the thing that tells computers what to do - is made up of bits. All the games we know and love, with their complex graphics and storylines, can be boiled down to a large string of 1s and 0s. But how can this be? You might ask. How can a 1 or a 0 tell a computer what to do? It all depends on the context. For example, take the machine code 0111 0011. In a certain context, those bits can represent the number 115. But in another context, it can represent the lowercase letters. The same goes for the type of code inserted. In one context, this gibberish represents the number 112940527124480. But in another, it stands for the assembly language command. As you can see, bits can mean many different things. It’s up to the Central Processing Unit (CPU) and Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) on each gaming console to process all those bits and turn them into the games we enjoy playing.

The Revanchist I can understand people complaining about framerate if it’s because it’s not good enough for a certain game. I would hate if a hack and slash game wasn’t 60 FPS, but only because you absolutely _need_ to have that high of a framerate for a game in that genre because of how fast-paced and action packed those games are. In my opinion, while going above and beyond is always great, all that should really matter for framerate is if it allows the game to be playable. If a game can run well at 30 FPS, I’m perfectly fine with 30 FPS. I rarely even notice the difference between 30 and 60, which is ironic given that 60 is twice as much as 30.

The bits refers to the console's CPU architecture. It's not that different from today's PCs which either have 32-bit or 64-bit CPUs and operating systems. More bits means more data throughput, and more complex programming/colors.

Hz means "times per second" essentially. MHz is mega hertz, or million times per second, and GHz are Giga hertz, or billion times per second. That means, for example, a processor running at say, 1.5GHz is performing 1.5 billion "clock cycles" per second, and in each clock cycle, the cpu is performing a single instruction.

***** Exactly. Although with most PCs these days, speed isn't everything. An 8 core cpu running at 3GHz could do more work than a 4 core running at 3.5GHz

WRONG!, real captain here, the bits just tell how much data every set of instruction can have,the architeture is how the cpu interprets the code, for instance. on a intel device, i would have a processor with AMD64/IA64 Instruction set (being 64bits) but with the haxwell architeture and have an AMD device with also AMD64/IA64 Instructions sets but with the Bulldozer architeture.the bits just tell how much data, every comand sent to and from the processor can have. In fact because of the difference between architetures, you can have a processor being dual core better than a quadcore processor, because the way the arc interprets / processesthe comands is more optimized for that instruction set / phisical hardware. And instruction sets are just a list of comands that the processor can interpret and process. thats why a binary x86 application cant be run on a ARMV7/8 devices (ARM is the mainstream mobile arch now), because the processor would not know what to do.

For those who don't know, bits mean how big a single binary number is. 8bit is 1 byte, 16bit is 2, and so on. All it means in regards to consoles and computers is how many bits the CPU can handle at a time. The FC/FDS CPU could only support one byte, though the games themselves on floppy disk and possibly cartridge could be measured in kilobytes, more so for disks.

"People begin caring more about graphics and less about the actual gameplay!" With this truth said, i hate todays videogame community. I dont care about the graphics if the Gameplay is good, but sadly 99% of the players dont shut up about their "superior" Systems or PC when it comes to this. For example i hate the new Star Wars Battlefront execution. It comes way too expensive (with massive DLC planned right from the start and shit) and has too less to offer "BUT HURR DURR THE GRAFIX ARE AWESOME!" "DID YOU SEE THE GRAFIX?!" "DO YOU EVEN GRAFIX BRO?!" yea fuck off..
