@@handsomebrick which ghostbusters video game was that? I only played the arcade GB. The NES game looked like ass to me, and i didn't have a genesis until later. but yeah, I played the Goonies II well before I actually saw the movie. Like James, i don't remember it too well I borrowed GII from my friend a couple of times. He is the one who told me that it was a sequel to the movie. It always seemed like a plausible explanation, until i heard about the famicom original many years later. Aren't you supposed to rescue a mermaid from some italians in GII? why would italians want to kidnap the mermaid? was there even a mermaid in the movie? I can't remember.

So glad you guys figured out some of the more cryptic bits on your own. Here’s a few others you might not have known: 1) You don’t really need to punch/hammer the sides of each room; just the front, top, and bottom. 2) In the point-and-click zones, press Start to cancel any undesirable “Go” or “Tools” press (figured that one out one time when I accidentally hit Go in a room with no doors, and would have been stuck as I hadn’t placed my ladder). 3) There are actually three additional bombable secret rooms, each contains a zombie looking dude who gives you an extra life. How do I remember all of this? I literally played through the whole game in the time it took to watch this video.

Goonies 2 and zelda were both problem solving games, that's what made games in the 80's great. Metroid one was so hard, cause you were constantly learning new things, and we didnt have the internet to tell us what do. I remember going to school talking to people about how to do this or that, or this kid in school learned how to move gravestones or rocks to find secret passages. Goonies had naive type puzzles and I thought that's what made it really cool, but yes I understand the frustration, but I also loved the Goonies movie and that helps. Think it's cool you guys chose this game to play, cause it's a good adventure but tricky.

Yeah, this one is frustrating to watch. Around 52:30 I can tell what shape the maze is even without knowing what buttons he's pressing, so it's weird they can't figure it out. To be clear, there are definitely elements of bad design here. It's weird how the directions on the maze flip. Hitting the old man 5 times to get the candle makes no sense, even by the standards of the day. But it's not *as* bad as they're making it out to be.

You are not supposed to punch the ceiling, floor and corners of the room. The punch is only used for hitting the middle wall at the center of the room. You do this primarily for getting key holders and bomb holders. The hammer you use for hitting the middle wall to find hidden doors and safe's. It is also used when hitting the ceiling and floor, in order to find ways of using the ladder. Then last, you use the magic glasses to find invisible doors and safe's. No need to hitting the sides and corners, as it only takes up a lot of time you should'nt be wasting. The game get a lot funnier to play, when you follow the above steps.

If he's facing away from you, then you press up so he walks straight through the door. If he's facing towards you then you want him to go down into the next set of doors (which can't be seen). I haven't noticed until minute "58:18" where Mike said "I wanna go through that door!". He pressed down and went through the door. If you look to the left/down corner of the screen, where the kid is with the arrows, you'll notice he was facing towards the down arrow. To confirm this I just went back and forward through the entire video and yes, depending the direction the kid is facing, that is the direction or perspective if you will of the room.

I loved this game when I was a kid. Navigating the rooms isn’t that bad, you just have to look at which way your little character sprite is facing and have which side of the map you’re on in the back of your head, that way you can figure out which direction you’re facing and where you need to go. I beat this game when I was a kid, but I had to use the Power because there is some cryptic shit going on at times. I rather enjoyed searching every nook and cranny in the rooms, but then again I tend to like really slow paced games where you have to search for hidden stuff. The only gripe that I have is that you should be able to hold an item such as the hammer in your hand until you select something else. Re-selecting it 27 times in the same room gets to be tedious at times, but other than that I really enjoy this game. I sure love the music, and I really like that they included (Goonies R) Good Enough in it. It’s not Contra or SMB for sure, but it’s a damn good and very difficult game.

With back and forward, all you have to do is remember if you are coming from the back of the map or front of the map. If you enter a door from the front map, you will always face forward and if you enter a door going from the back of the map, you always face backward because you are coming from the back. Once you understand that, it's easy. I love this game, it's one of my favorite games on the NES and is a true classic. It's part adventure part puzzle solving and it can be frustrating but very rewarding when you figure stuff out.

Played the goonies 2 at the age of 6 to 10 & more NES games but the further i made it was to Green+Orange Cave (at 32:32 to be precise) where you need the glasses, until i watched a speedrun of the game and then i felt the relief like 10 years later when i finally got to see what to do and hows the ending.. i loved this game and spent so much time visiting the whole areas maybe i had left a room that i forgot, tried so many times but it was just impossible to solve.. also glad i've finished the game on my own, in a pretty decent time, in like 20 mins or something

They are bad at playig games and by now it's obvious they aren't very smart, not even basically smart, unless they're just faking, which I don't think it is. Heehee! That would be amazing! I can see The Nerd talking about how he keeps getting requests for this game, and he finds this video on KZbin as part of his research. What would make a great 4th Wall breaking joke is if the Nerd started making fun of James and Mike, saying things like, "Look at these dorks, they probably don't even know which way to hold a controller. Couple of dweebs, this game can't be that bad." Then that's when the review proper starts.

The way your character is facing is _solely_ an aesthetic design marker to "help" you determine which world-orientation was entered from the side-scrolling part. Separately, to navigate all door segments: imagine yourself in a 3D-Box, spanning potentially even a 3x3 (or even 4x4?) grid-where each d-pad direction is a door. Doors where you hit "down" on d-pad aren't visible, which is a point of confusion. That's it, lol. I don't have an explanation for the occasionally stupid hit-box, however.
