I loved the ironic description of mutton as aged lamb. Comic genius. I had to explain to my less sophisticated wife that it was indeed aged, in the sense of being left alive for several more years before the trip to the slaughterhouse. I shall henceforth refer to beef as aged veal

Of all the classic NYC steakhouses I've seen, Keen's definitely looks like the vibe that's most up my alley. I’m glad that you’re choice to wear Brooks Brothers was intentional. It was a nice Easter egg. I noticed it almost immediately, but assumed that it was coincidence. As for the logo being disturbing, it’s a reference to The Golden Fleece from the ancient Greek tradition. So, if you think of it as a magical pelt, rather than a live animal being tortured, it’s at least mildly more palatable.

Great review! The Keen's mutton chop is one of my favorite dishes in New York, but you should know that it's not actually mutton - It's an extra-thick double saddle of lamb. I’m not going to scroll through the entirety of the comments but I didn’t see this mentioned in the first 50ish so… mutton is not “aged lamb” unless you want to get disingenuously pedantic. Glad you enjoyed it and well done finishing it!

Haha! Yeah, that would've been amusing.

I'm of Serbian ancestry on my dad's side. My mom divorced him when I was 11 years old. Prior to that, we used to go to picnics in Chicago with my dad's side. The men dug a pit, then I think they wrapped a whole lamb in a BBQ pit. I still remember how that lamb just melted in my mouth. Unfortunately, my husband will only eat ground lamb in stuffed grape leaves or in pastitsio.

Wow, that sounds like an incredible way to prepare lamb. Thanks for sharing.

Loved the video! Because of your last Keens video, we ate there. Best steak we ever had and mash potatoes. Question: You had better mash potatoes somewhere else? Please do tell.
@Jamesnu9 ай бұрын
Thank you! I'm happy to hear that you guys had a good experience there! Yeah, they were definitely good potatoes, but if I remember correctly, I believe that I enjoyed the mashed potatoes at Gibsons steakhouse in Chicago a bit more.

Went to Keens last year. The atmosphere is definitely iconic. However it wasn’t one of my top picks. Delmonico’s is the one I need to try, especially after seeing your video. 🥩.

Mutton is a typically European dish. Not popular in the States. At times it can be “gamey” if not properly prepared. In the hands of an experienced and accomplished chef it can be “heaven on earth”. Americans avoid it but don’t know what they’re missing. Your video today demonstrated that clearly. Good work James.

Thank you! Yeah, after experiencing how tasty the dish was, it's a shame that it's not more commonly found in the US.
