As someone who’s graduated, the way ranger school awards work is there is a DHG, an enlisted honor grad, and an officer honor grad. What I’m gathering from this is that he was the Enlisted HG, not the DHG. Also the awards there really don’t matter so this is a weird hill for both of these sides to die on.

Here are my 2 cents as a Veteran. It’s pretty clear he got caught in a few lies. He should’ve just said that he embellished and moved on. His story is more than good enough without the lies. If it’s not in his DD Form 214 it didn’t happen. There is no way he forgot being a Distinguished Graduate. He also didn’t dress down his Captain. There were no Iranians. These things were easy to prove/disprove and the best he could come up with was “trust me bro.”

I got hit twice. My brain injury was not diagnosed for 9 years. Once it was diagnosed, I could have pursued a purple heart however to me, it was a little bit embarrassing. It's an injury that nobody can see and it was 9 years after my first tour in Iraq. So although my situation is vastly different from his, I can assure you that sustaining an injury is not a guarantee that you will get anything. Secondly, in some, if not all army schools there is a distinguished honor graduate and an honor graduate. What I believe he is saying is that he was the honor graduate but not the distinguished honor graduate. I'm a little bit late to this comment board but I hope you see this.

Going back to the Purple Heart chat. I got hit in Baghdad in 04, I got diagnosed in 2011 when I was at FT LW in Missouri. We had a fantastic s-1 and they constantly nagged me about doing PH paperwork but it would have been up to me to track down multiple service members that I serve with an '04.... I would have had to remind them of one of hundreds of attacks, and basically relive those moments so that I could get awarded the purple heart. I just never felt comfortable doing that. So I have no idea whether those stories and question are true, I just know that being injured does not automatically mean you're going to be awarded.

Any ATTRS class no-show also results in the Soldier being barred from any other ATTRS course for at least a year. A failure does not result in a bar. Anyone pointing out that someone has failed a course or school, without additional context, when they know that person ultimately passed the course, is not acting in good faith and calls their motives and credibility into question. Anyone who has been in the Army and done anything knows with 100% certainty that you don’t always get awards you deserve or have earned, and if you ask for an award you earned but didn’t get you are ridiculed as an award hound and reminded that we don’t do our jobs for awards…and you still don’t get it. If you get injured there are two documents the medic must fill out in order for the Purple Heart to be issued, The Report of medical treatment and the casualty feeder card. It is the casualty feeder card that will be the basis for the issue of the Purple Heart. More often than not the medic who administer initial treatment in the field (At the location the wound was received) he/she is the one who fills this card out. If not, during follow-on treatment at the TMC the Dr., PA, or medic who completes the treatment should fill it out. If it doesn't get filled out, then no purple heart will be issued. This is very common!!! VERY COMMON!!! With that said, Tim should still have the Report of medical treatment. Which it sounds like he does. He said he will go back and resolve this administratively later.

Not at all, as long as the SF 600 is filed then the process for a Purple Heart can begin, the DD Form 1380 can support that claim but the SF 600 provides all the data needed for medical side of things. The admin side is where statements get gathered and so on.

S-1 Guy here, so when you get awards like Purple Heart, CIB or ARCOM w/V these awards have to be APPROVED by the Chain of Command (COC) but if you have a shitty COC, or like Tim mentioned no COC at all as an attached asset you will have no one to put in the documentation for you for these awards. Most times, these silent gentlemen dont come in asking for the DA-638 (award form) to the S1 because its stigmatized. He more than likely can be telling the truth at least about the medals, from a 42A. Hope this helps

The Marine Corps never got to review my case and the Air Force offered me an Air Force Combat Action Medal. I turned it down. I was attached to 2/1 and 3/5 and earned a CAR, not an AFCAM. The Purple Heart would be very weak. It was just a few pieces of shrapnel no deeper than a splinter in my left hand.

My sons buddy from high school was injured in combat in Afghanistan and he was treated in a shed in the middle of a fire fight and he did not get a purple hart, in fact it took years for him to get the surgeries he needed because they had no record of the injuries.
