I served 27 years and the one thing that I will always remember is that you can't judge anyone by their looks. I remember beginning training courses looking around at some bad-ass looking guys and within hours they were on the bus headed home. For anyone heading into this type of training, don't start sizing yourself up to anyone. If you're in somewhat decent shape and not weak minded, you might make it.

My determination was to be a Ranger. Ever since I was 12 or 13 and saw a documentary and I was hooked. Then I got kicked in the balls at MEPS when it was discovered that I have Insulinoma (benign tumor on the pancreas) and the tumor(s) can be removed safely in most cases, but the procedure at the time was automatic DQ from enlistment. I was crushed and clearly went home and cried in my pillow like a bitch. But I eventually accepted it and moved on. That was late july or early August of 2000. Love the videos

the real challenge with RASP selection is most of the candidates are coming from basic training and AIT so they haven't developed real mission tactical training. More experienced soldiers have a little easier time getting into the ranger battalion because they developed experience in overwatch, bounding over, patrolling, linear ambushes, weapon awareness, OPLP. Radio procedures, light and noise discipline, identifying TRP ( Target Reference Points.) MOUT training and clearing rooms, Stack team procedures, and other infantry training as well as leadership as well as OP orders.

These video's almost always seem to miss a lot of the finer points of the coarse's. I think, for me, the toughest part, in both course's, was learning to maintain focus and discipline when the world seemed to be against us at every turn. Like one of the first clips when the soldier said, "you gotta learn to love the suck". He may not have realized just how close he was to the truth.

I went through RASP and Ranger training after Sapper school in Ft. Leonardwood back in 98-99 before 9/11. I can tell you that once you graduate you are assigned a team that you work with constantly. Training is the key to having a ok team and a elite team. I spent most of my career with the RANGERS. My last sacrifice I could give my RANGERS was to come back as a instructor. That was fun but mentally exhausting but I feel I was more of an ass than the other Cadret. I just hope I did my job to the best of my abilities...

jiujitsu5000 Yeah I kinda figured there would be no way in hell the Rangers would just allow some brand new guy to come in and just because they have a college degree that they are allowed to come in and start telling people what to do. I just read the book “A night in the Pech Valley” by former Ranger Grant McGarry. In this book he very clearly explains that Rangers must earn the respect and trust of his fellow teammates through proving themselves in difficult situations. Everything is peer based which is the way it should be. I loved how he described the hierarchy within the Ranger squads. Privates and non tabbed Rangers must sit on the floor when riding on the helicopters and only the most senior guys get to have the prime seating position with their legs dangling off the side of the chopper. I just think it’s so bad ass, the Rangers are literally modern day Spartans. Anyways I must thank you again for taking the time to write out thoughtful and helpful responses to us young men aspiring to work among the best of the best.

I served in Desert Shield, Desert Storm as a U.S. Army Combat medic... Also served in Afghanistan and Iraq...I was originally deployed with the 1st Armored Division..I took care of the soldiers I was deployed with as they in return took care of me always having my back...To this day I still speak with them. There is an old saying, "I respect Medics but I never ever want to look up at one".....Amazingly, A man whom served in the Marine Corp walked over to me in a supermarket (Because I always wear a Army Combat Medic Hat) and said Ya know, I served in the Marine Corp, I shook his hand at the time and he said, I love you guys But I never ever wanted to look up at one...Didn't know so many knew that saying.

You should do a video on the 75th Ranger Reconnaissance company (RRC). this company is a tier one JOSOC unit (Delta & Seal Team 6). The operators are part of the Ranger regiment'special troops battalion. Most are from the 75th ranger regiment but candidates outside of the regiment are accepted but must have successfully completed the Army's Ranger Training Course and the five-week Reconnaissance Surveilance Leaders Course conducted by the 4th Ranger Training Battalion (Which is also required of candidates from the Ranger Regiment). The selection course for RRC is 3 wks and conducted twice a year.. If selected the candidate will then enter the 35 week operator training course.. The training course includes free-fall training, computers, advanced communications, digital photography, photo editing, reconnaissance reporting formats, fieldcraft and stalks, infiltration and exfiltration methods, close-air support, advanced driving techniques, demolitions, tactical man-tracking and advanced medical techniques

Great videos and commentary! My grandpa served in Merrill's Marauders in WWII (the parent unit of the Ranger Regiment) and I've learned from him and some of his fellow Marauder vets that teamwork and endurance are critical to the success of Ranger missions. I can definitely see a lot of parallels between things I've heard from Marauder vets and the critical tasks shown in this RASP selection doc.

He never shoved his Ranger accomplishments down your throat as wasn’t a prick about anything and actually seldom ever brought it up. I was 11b and when I was in basic in red phase we had to pull "dead" soldiers back and forth full gear like we were doing suicide sprints. I was 17 years ol, and probably 155 at the time. The guy I had to pull one day was probably 4-6 inches taller and around 230-240 pounds.. that sucked! In infantry school we had to carry over our shoulder back and forth full gear and I had the same scenario but in a rock pit rather than dirt and grass. Harder to keep your balance and keep pace.

I think a lot of these RASP candidates are fresh from basic and have not even been in a regular unit yet. So, to expect them to be good at fire and maneuver as a team is unrealistic. No one comes out of basic training as a seasoned soldier. They all need months of experience under supervision of NCO's and comrades who they can trust and can develop into skilled soldiers.
@Phantom0fTheRouter

True. They are only a few weeks past being confused on patrol in OSUT about what type of action to take because of who knows what type of flare went off that they didn't see wandering through the woods at night with everyone in their platoon taking different actions and passing different communication because no one knew jack, except Carl who was the one that actually hit a trip wire, and he just dropped where he was on the trail on top of his weapon.

I heard that this class had an abnormally high graduation rate, probably because of the camera crew documenting everything. From what I heard there are some things they do in RASP to the candidates that would not look too good on camera. Or maybe less people wanted to quit because they were being filmed. Obviously they're not showing all of it and I imagine this training is tuff and good, but being a marine I feel like I have done all the same training which confuses me to why they are considered special operations. This is a legitimate question I have because I don't have all the knowledge, but when I think of special operations, I think of small unit movement with a far longer pipeline of training. I respect every single one of you and I would love to learn even more. Thank you, semper fidelis
