@@silk7385 Interesting. Though not in this video and not the theatrical bawling of bootcamp in any case. Shouting to make yourself heard is different from the bootcamp thing which I think is all about getting the USMC _culture_ into recruits ASAP; shock and awe maybe.

@@Twirlyhead so what you see on camera for any Buds class is so toned down. The instructors do not yell to just be heard. They are putting as much stress on you physically and mentally as possible to get you to break and fail. In Buds everyone fails multiple times at different things. They want to see how you are in those situations in the most extreme ways. I cannot go into detail but as I said what you see on film is no where near the reality. I didn't make it through Buds myself but I have a deep respect for the program because of my experiences while in the program.

The shouting is to get the attention of the civilian and break them out of civilian habits. SEAL recruits in BUD/S have often already been exposed to what is required of them. Hell Week will break them in more than a Chief shouting at them.

5:03 when I was going through the about 300 pages of forms you need to sign to head off to basic training here in Canada, I was chatting away with the Corporal on the recruiting center desk and asking about her time going through basic, and she replied with "There's normal tired. There's operationally tired after a 16 hour patrol. Then there's training tired, where you're so exhausted your feet don't want to work anymore. But they train you to be able to at least fire your rifle when you're 'what the fuck' tired!" I still remember that to this day. (And I popped a kidney stone during my 3rd week of training, and since the Navy can't have you having kidney stones 3,000 KM in the middle of buttfucknowhere, the Atlantic Ocean, honorably discharged for medical reasons before I finished basic :( )

Best friend went through BUD/S a couple years ago and made it through. From what he told me, the 2 months he spent at NSW Prep helped him learn a lot of what's coming next, what to expect and mentally prepare for it. Phase 1, Day 1, he said was a literal nightmare. "Nothing can completely prepare you for it, you just have to get there and keep telling yourself to get to the next meal. Do it enough over the day and before you know it, you're lining up for muster and heading to your dorm. I did that 180 times. Hell Week is pretty hard to remember, the only thing I can compare it to is running an ultra marathon where you're carrying a boat on your head and every 5 steps you're getting smoked for something. Pool Comp has turned my love for swimming and diving into a hatred of the pool. I think the most fun I had during BUD/S was in Phase 3 and getting to shoot automatics at the range."

Prep helps everyone pass pool skills (drown proofing, treading, underwater knot tying) & get faster at running (on pavement). It doesn’t do shit for running in boots on the sand especially with a 200lb boat on your head. There’s no way to train for that. Hence the attrition remains as it was back in the day

My good friend just a few years back did his 24 weeks of buds training. He went to Don Shipley's training camp for seals going into Bud's training. He also had a brother and a father that were a Navy SEAL that helped prep him. He whizzed through his buds training. Usually a man who's had a father that was a seal don't usually have a hard time passing buds training. Not because they have connections because their dad was a seal. But because they had a father that taught them steel values. Like my friend who just went through buds a few years back. His dad was a Navy SEAL and my dad was a Green Beret and when we were kids we went hunting and on Long hikes. Our fathers would train us during the summer time filling our backpacks with rocks and making us go on long hikes to get ready for the app coming deer and Elk season. Our fathers wanted to know that we're going to be able to pack whatever we kill Out of the Woods. And the way our fathers Hunted we were far from Road Hunters. So by the time I went through basic training it was basically nothing compared to what my father put me through and what my friend's dad and those are dads would put us through. So I believe that these pre buds classes especially Don Shipley's help tremendously. Although I've never went through that kind of training that Bud's provides. I've went through some pretty excruciating training. And my friend believes it helped him tremendously. Where other guys were having big problems on certain things. Like I said my friend Wiz through it because when you're at Don Shipley's pre buds training. He makes you do pretty much everything you're going to do and Seals training over and over. So again yes I believe it totally helps

Now, you can go directly from Basic to a Pre-BUD/S course, instead of A School. They offer SEAL as a career path from enlistment now. You're even given the SO rating, Special Warfare Operator. They couldn't use SWO, because, Surface Warfare Officer was already a thing.

I think that our generation is just softer and more sheltered. In my opinion, that’s the reason for the attrition rate not significantly decreasing.
@raginggamer2109

The attrition rate is because there is “pre-buds”. It helps weed out the weak minds
@simbadg13

I dont think its cause our generation is weaker. being in the military I have seen how hard it is just to GO to these elite groups. Tons of physicals to make sure you have nothing wrong. Then you already need to be above average in fitness to be "considered" to go. (Most people stop here) Pass all that and sometimes you dont even go because all the slots were filled and/or you got beat cause other people are better candidates. I think the attrition is solely based on the training standards. They want the best of the best and wont settle for anything less.

When I was in boot camp I was slated to be a diver in 2003. There was extra PT requirments because I was contracted to be a diver. During A school we had what we called dive motivator. We had to get up early before a school (4 or 5 am)... PT was run by spec war there at great lakes. Was mostly spent in the pool getting comfortable with mask fin snorkel evolutions. The spec war prt was different than the regular navy prt. Lots and lots of swimming and ice cold showers. And that water is colllllddd in great mistakes. They used to turn all the showers on ice cold and make us run around in them. So yes there was prep back then but things are different now.

I guess you can train for strength, endurance, and even for pain tolerance, up to a certain degree. But you can't do that for will power and mental toughness. Either you have it or you don't. For me, that's what separates the one that succeeds from the quitters. Period.

"As you[Jocko Willink] and I know, training is nothing compared to war. Like, you think BUD/s is hard? It's hard. Right? Until you get hit in the face. In a real combat operation. Then you reset your benchmark on what is hard, or what is pain, or what is suffering." ~Jonny Kim, former ST3 enlisted SEAL, Recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals with Combat "V," 2006 Naval Special Warfare Medic of the Year, 2 deployments in '06 Ramadi and '08 Sadr City, 18D medic, sniper, nav/point, Tillman Scholar, Physician and Harvard Medical School Graduate, NASA Astronaut, Humble Human Being He also said this: "You don't become a SEAL at BUD/s. The closest I can say I have come to that level of tired was 11 day’s on 8 hours of sleep but we were in no way doing the level of physical activity. Most convoys and pulling security. We were still so exhausted we started seeing “enemy troops” pulling up. (This was training). But there was no one there.

Once, in a severely sleep deprived state, there were two guys standing on the other side of the street talking to each other but I could tell they were talking about me. I can hear them talking but I couldn't make out what they were saying but it was clear they were talking about me. I tried being polite and asked across the street "hey fellas, are you guys talking to me? if so, I can't make out what you're saying." They looked at each other chuckled and looked back at me. I asked, "is there a problem?" Same thing, they looked at each other and started laughing at me. That infuriated me and, without even looking before I crossed the street, headed straight toward them. When I got about halfway across the street, they sort of ducked. The closer I got to them, the more compact they became. Turns out, it was two newspaper machines, those metal boxes you buy newspapers from. I was visibly and audibly hallucinating. I went straight to my barracks and, the entire trip there (on foot), I could hear people in the bushes and trees laughing at me and taunting me for what had happened.

At around 3:30 you say they must regret not finishing BUDS as then they are just in the fleet. Jocko Willinck mentioned this a lot. If you're in the Marine Corps or Army and don't make it into Marsoc or SF/rangers etc....you can still do the jobs that involve handling weapons. If you don't make it as a SEAL there's nothing else in the navy that is similar to it to fall back on. So Stick with your swim buddy :)

I remember when I went to Hospital Corps School in San Diego... this was in 93... they were sending SEALs to Corps School for the medical training because Corpsman, at the time, had too big a dropout rate and couldn't hack it. And, at THAT time, yes... the pattern was basic, a-school, then off to the fleet, or if pipe-lined, to BUD/S. I also know those kelp beds well... and I used to run on the beach by San Mateo. 3/5 STA. Keep on keepin' on Jameson.

Wasn’t always like this, I assume the attrition rate wasn’t high before having Pre-Buds. There was a time when SEALs and UDT’s didn’t accept civilians off the street and instead accepted Experienced Naval Personnel; Seabees (Majority of Candidates), Corpsman, GM’s, BM’s, MA’s, QM’s, basically anyone in the Navy but the majority came from those sources because they all have training with Small Arms, Rubber Crafts, SAR, Navigation, Explosives, and Diving. Which are great skill sets needed for NAVSPEC.

I was in great lakes in 2003....anyone slated/contracted to go to buds, swcc, or diver was required to go to what was known as "dive motivator" This was pt at 0445... Swimming... Mask/fin/snorkel familiarization... And all kinds of other pt. It wasn't just pt, they were getting us ready for the mind games. Example: January in great lakes... You're already cold. They made us get in the group shower with all the shower heads running ice cold water and run around in circles until someone quit. That 32 degree water after you've only been awake for 10 minutes just fucks with you. Much of the focus was on being comfortable in the water when some stress was applied... Such as trying to be calm when you're out of O2. All this was on top of the regular navy pt and A school academics. Was anyone else there in 03? You remember "the fish?"
