I've welded several frames .I think you did it right by using the mig welder. Because you so much more potential strength per square inch. Then using a 70/18 rod . In reality that is more likely the strongest part of your frame. Even before you add any kind of bracing. Because you welded both sides you have around 24000 pounds per square inch on a almost 12 inch frame. Making that 24000 × 12 in that one area alone is way more Weight than you can possibly ever put on one truck.

it didnt work, understatement of the decade, the weld filler metal strength would be the key to your repair, 7018 is 70k ppsi, mig is 120k ppsi, they have used stick welds for years,
@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 13 сағат бұрын
There is Tig filler you can buy or order in 70,80,90 … all the way up to 130ooo psi tensile strength…. Now I doubt he did special order that stuff …. And Tig welds by nature are shallow penetrating…. If done correctly a guy could Tig weld a frame, but like you said, it wouldn’t have been my first choice…
@JamesPretty
@JamesPretty 13 сағат бұрын
It’s been a while since I shot this video not sure what “it didn’t work” Refers to bro but standard mig wire is 70k just like tig wire “er70” I’m sure you can get different mig wire as well Nothing wrong with stick welding but the NHRA doesn’t allow it any more so I wonder why?
@HankThomas-c9l
@HankThomas-c9l 13 сағат бұрын
100% right if that frame breaks it will not be on the weld
@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 13 сағат бұрын
@@JamesPretty standard MiG wire also comes in different tensile strength. But regular MiG is a medium penetrating process, AND it produces very hard welds with very poor elongation. Over time the truck frame flexing will carry a great risk of failure. The reason why stick was suggested was that the weld is covered with a slag layer which lets the weld cool slow and gives it excellent elongation. Btw dual shield &lug cored wire would do the same thing …. And later processes are also both spray arc processes with excellent penetration AND the flux helps dealing with minor potential surface contamination…. Well, we will never know how good the weld was as detailed video footage was not available we didn’t see the joint prep or any back gouging if it happened ….. For sure short circuit MiG wouldn’t have been the answer either…
@HankThomas-c9l
@HankThomas-c9l 12 сағат бұрын
I see your concern and understand why you might be a little worried the weld might be hard and could possibly snap. But I'm thinking if you let it cool naturally that it didn't harden as much as you think. But I seen the blue color on the frame metal does tell me that it definitely got super hot

Will it have any serious use pulling heavy loads, or is it just a toy? If it is just for pleasure then all the weld worries don't matter. BTW you are really lucky, the advice is absolutely the best you can get, even JC Smith sits up and takes notice of Peter Zila.
