James I saw the clip of the raised bed you had the in ground pest and immediately thought of the spicy mustard treatment . You can grow that bed full of the spicy mustard and chop it into the soil and let it break down in the soil and that bed will be pest free, it even gets rid of the bad nematodes that attack the roots of the plants. I'm a firm believer and it works! I'm a lot older than you are and have been gardening for most of my life. Give it a try, yes it will tie up that bed for a few weeks but it's so worth it.

Have you ever tried to plant is plane old garden soil? I grew up in the wilderness with the closest store hours away that required a dirt mountain road, a ferry and another mountain road. Driving to town was done only a few times a year and my mother successfully grew enough food that she preserved for our family of 6 to eat well all winter, spring and into the summer.

Good for her, made do with what she had. You can still do that some places. Your Mama might have been the first person growing there so the soil wasn't depleted. A lot of us city folk inherit worn out soil so it needs some TLC to get it back in shape. Also for raised containers just tossing dirt in doesn't tend to work too well. It also leaves you with a pit somewhere else.

@@renel7303 You make some very valid points that I never thought about. Thank you so much. Yes, my parents landscaped a rock slide behind the log house to create all the terraced gardens up the hill side and the earth that they brought in was from the nearby forest. That truly was a GREAT life.

It can be as simple as your folks did it. Even crappy soil with just compost and leaf mold would suffice quite nicely. All these fancy schmancy designer ingredients are not required. Dirt, water, sun. Funny how nature does it all for free and quite well. Side by side comparison of my soil and his and I guarantee they would perform the same. I make my own worm castings, bokashi compost, regular compost, JMS microbes, leaf mold, and raised beds from free pallets. virtually no cost and incredible results works for me.

I wish I could do that too but 1) it's our first year here, 2) we have no idea what chemicals have been put here prior to us moving in, 3) our soil is clay and super rocky, 4) it's temporary until we buy land, and 5) I've never had the privilege of being able to grow directly in the ground so I need to do some homework first. I'm spending this year growing in containers and raised beds while working on trying to get a patch of the yard ready for next spring. Here's hoping all goes well 😊

@runningwarrior5468 true! We learn so much from these videos and get overzealous. I sprayed BT last week on some stuff, same time I added granular 10 10 10 fertilizer. Not many worms. Pots, raised bed and soil garden. Lost 3 dozen seedlings/ plants/transplant. The BT probably was too potent. The fertilizer burned the roots?.idk. I live in FL and it's sandy soil so I spend a lot of time and money trying to build it up😢

I bought a small cement mic per to turn and mix the soil and it works great. I have to grow all in bags because we live in sand and nematodes so it’s all containers. Takes a lot of soil. I fill the bottom with logs and leaves and greens then soil. A small hugelculture. Ps, it’s not cheap. Wear a mask because of what those components are made of.

It'd be nice to see how to compose a soil without breaking the bank in the process. kelp meal, myco fungi, vermiculite, perlite, seaweed extract, biochar, mushroom compost, fertilizer, coco coir, I know the kitchen sink is in there somewhere right? Where's the dirt? You can make just as effective a soil with homemade leaf mold and compost, homemade biochar, sand, manure, and top soil dug up. Fertilizers like anaerobic fermented weeds and greens are free and very effective. Bokashi composting and JMS in there as well. Total cost for my ideas…free! I guess being broke on a fixed income has its benefits when it comes to being creative and finding a way. It irks me that some viewers would think gardening is so damn complicated and just way too expensive when it doesn't have to be. Nature herself doesn't have to shop at Amazon for $pendy ingredients, they're all there just waiting.

I remember watching some of your videos about grafting and growing apple trees from seeds. My trees have to be 13 or 14 years old now. The one I have five different apples on is going strong, but it still doesn’t produce tons of apples. The tree started from a Honeycrisp seed. That tree produces apples that taste just like Honeycrisp but they’re probably 2/3 less of the size. I gave my buddy a tree while it’s too, that I twisted the trunks together. He gets giant apples off of both trees that taste awesome! Apparently, the odds of getting good apples from seeds were better for me than expected. I do have a couple of the trees that grew, but also turned into the crabapple trees. lol I planted those out on the boulevard.

When we built my garden beds we used cheap top soil that we bought by the dump truck load, along with peat and compost. Didn’t use any vermiculite or pearllite and it was honestly the biggest mistake ever. I wish I had seen your channel before we started building the beds because last year the beds essentially solidified and went hydrophobic. Nothing grew well at all. It was very upsetting 😢 I did add some manure at the end of the year and then topped off with leaf mulch, and it’s looking a lot better now. This year I’ll be adding an irrigation system so I can keep it watered better. I’ll also be adding more compost as I get stuff planted. Hopefully it retains moisture better this year and I don’t have to do anything drastic to fix it at the end of this season.

Wait, doesn’t coco coir hold onto nitrogen salts that require flushing? If I’m not mistaken, peat doesn’t hold as many salts as coco.

I can't afford most of those things, but I do have aged woodchips, leaf mold, and organic nitrogen amendments in abundance. I'm wondering if some combination thereof would make for a cheaper alternative.

He is demonstrating for container gardeners. If you want to container garden and can’t buy all the amendments use your compost, some type of soil and add either peat moss or coco coir so it doesn’t get to heavy or dry out fast. I mostly rely on my compost for nutrients added to inground gardening. For containers, I use peat moss and it’s true that it can get too dry and no longer absorb water well. I bought the bricks of coco coir to use instead since amazon had on sale for $15 . I add amendments for specific crops, but what you have is wonderful and you could definitely work with it for inground or container gardening. Ps i recycle my container soil every year so I don’t have to add a whole lot to what I have. I just want to stop using peat moss in my containers bc it really can be troublesome.

My spine has been too damaged to let me mix it by hand, but I have a used cement mixer that does the job beautifully. Another benefit of coco coir over peat moss is that the coir doesn’t have fungus gnats.

Thanks James for this timely revisit of your soil mix!! I have had some good luck with coconut coir myself too. Coconut coir doesn't carry the bug or bacterial risk that peat moss does, and I like this better. No problems with seedlings, fungus gnats, mold, etc from too much moisture retention.

If you use the black kow compost, do you still have to add the worm casting, kelp meal ect? Z

Peat moss is more environmentally friendly at the end of the day, less emissions to transport it less work to process it and it doesnt pollute with salt like coir does.

I would think using a concrete mixer or making your own mixer (like from an old clothes dryer drum with the paddles) would mix the ingredients better. But if you like playing in the dirt more then have fun.

I would be nervous about having a pH too high for my preferences; you should measure and post what it is. My Mel's Mix seems to be 6.5, so subtracting the peat (which I thought had a pH of around 4) is something I'd hesitate to do. I think your mix is well thought out, especially with the perlite offsetting the coir's retention.

Thanks for the video! That second mix where you added worm casting, bio char etc… what would you use it for instead of the first mix..? Is it better for growing certain plants or in certain containers..? Maybe for heavy feeders..?

Looks good man! I swear by earthworms. Garden slam loaded up, meaning the soil is alive and healthy. If they thrive it's alive! Constant fertilizer factory, the bioactive kind plants do best with. Additionally, there's a worm farmer down the road and his 100 % pure castings a just pennies on the dollar. Best amendment for the buck. I make inexpensive soil amendment as well. Wood chips dumped by a tree company for free, leaves that fall from trees for free, and fish carcasses and guts I also get for free (from a seafood market). Mix together, just add water and let it cook! An occasional turn and it eventually turns to magic. And...the worms love it too! Incidentally, I freeze some of the smaller fish for planting season. Excellent booster. Other organic amendments I purchase if needed. Let's get started!

That looks like an excellent potting mix. I personally like adding soil to my raised bed mix. I tend to aim for around 2 parts coir and compost, 1 part soil, and 1 perlite/vermiculite for raised beds. Clearly, your mix is working well though. Tuck in his little jumper ❤❤❤. Cheers!
