10 Years Later, From Normal Backyard To Permaculture Garden (Unseen Footage)

10 years ago I started planting fruit trees and other fruiting perennials in my backyard garden. The goal at the time was to create a food forest garden that would be a mixture of both annual fruits and vegetables, and perennial fruits and vegetables. A permaculture garden is one that seeks to not only provide a good yield, but also aims to mimic nature and apply the patterns and examples from nature into the design of the garden. Gardening with permaculture principles in mind will ultimately lead to a bigger more sustainable yield for the current year, and years to come.

Here I am also in Jersey looking at my yard, sad face:( I grew up in the Caribbean, Barbados and my grandad had the entire property planted with fruit, vegetables and herbs. He used the water from the kitchen sink to water most of it and made a complex aqueduct-like complex of stone streams to water the rest. It was beautiful and delicious. I do not have a lot of fruits or veggies at home but I do have a plot in our town's community garden that is flourishing. One day James I will do as you have done, no grass period! At home I have planted lots of native pollinators and have a blast watching the birds, the bees and the butterflies feed.

I have a huge garden and it's just grass. I hate looking at all the grass!!! So watching you and other youtube gardeners has inspired me to get rid of the grass and go full permaculture. Thank y’all for this incredible video! There are so many gardening videos online and so many new gardeners that it’s good to have videos like these showing that nothing happens overnight and it didn’t always look like this. I find myself getting discouraged quite often as well. It’s easy to fall into the trap of negative self talk. Noticing what’s wrong is so much easier than giving credit for what’s right. Telling yourself you don’t know what you’re doing, it’s too hard, there is too much to learn, or the garden is not as good as everyone else’s and it’s time to just quit is a struggle. It’s easy to forget how our concept of time and how our environment’s concept of time are two opposing forces. The time that nature takes is much longer than ours. I heard somewhere that the 3rd year is really when there’s a noticeable shift in the garden. After taking time to develop the soil and attract beneficial insects-which may not have been around in any big numbers to begin with-the microclimate established in the garden is really beginning to noticeably balance itself out around that time. So again, thank you James and thank you Tuck! Keep growing on!!

My wife Jenny and I moved to the house and garden we are in now last year and with 250 feet of garden and me reaching 70 I needed some guidance. Wow, this is so inspiring. I'm trying to convert my backyard into a food forest. It's a lot of hard work, cutting back all the overgrown hedges and vines, but I'm trying to do a bit every few days (takes a few days to recover in between). I started this journey myself a month ago, started by getting wooden pallets, making little planters and checking out videos about replanting store bought stuff. Love your garden, love your channel. I consider you my neighbor since I was born and raised in Philadelphia. I now live farther north in Pennsylvania and love growing food. My parents had apple, pear and peach trees, grapes and berries. In addition my dad created the most beautiful vegetable garden. I remember the ropes he braided with harvested garlic and onions. He would hang them on the rustic wood shed. I now have the pleasure of growing vegetables in the garden that my father worked foe 40 years before my son and I started. I completely agree that this is what we should be doing as a nation. Here in my local community, we've decided not to mow our lawns or use Roundup or other pesticides. Instead, we're letting our lawns grow. So many edible weeds and plants you can grow in your own backyards. We're also letting the lawns grow in a couple of abandoned houses, to supplement our neighborhood stockpile and donate the surplus to local food banks and church pantries. Dude, I have to say I think your channel is hands down better than all of the privileged “homesteader” channels on KZbin. What you do is achievable by a much larger segment of the population. Your backyard multiplied would be revolutionary. Keep up the great work.

I really admire what you do James. Thank you for sharing your evolution with us. I am just starting my Food Forest journey and I love to watch what you've done through the years. I already have a few fruit trees (came with the property 😁) and I've put in a few beds - no dig style. Looking forward to transforming all thIs useless lawn into an organic food generating machine! Wish I had a Tuck helping me out. He's the most adorable Bossman I've ever seen. Keep inspiring people my friend. That is absolutely amazing. I have been gardening for years only able to grow a small vegetable garden make a yard nice and then move on. Now I have over an acre and settled and paid for I have started transforming my yard thanks to you. I have 12 fruit trees that I planted 3 years ago and up to six veg garden beds so far. Every year the yard looks better and better. Looking at your transformation inspired me and your every video gives me hope that more people will follow you. Thanks, look forward to every video. You should consider planting an array of butterfly host plants and nectar plants. Many have the added benefit of being edible and the natives are really carefree.

I have a lot of land that I have turned into a garden rather than a yard I do have a small area of grass to sit in and enjoy usually going over garden stuff. But I enjoy having my massive gardening area
