I definitely noticed when I went to the US, that yes the containers of blueberries they sell are at least 6x more than Australia for what you pay, but they had so little flavour, like you described, just a bit of sweetness and that's it. I love blueberries in Aus that we buy because you get the real blackberries but they're insanely pricey. I can't wait to grow some when I move to the US however, I never knew how many different berries there are. You have inspired me to grow a big variety. Thank you for the great delivery of information!

Honey berries/June berries. First one up in the spring. Very sweet, smallish blueberry-like. In Northern Illinois, Zone 5b, they come in last weeks of May, first weeks of June. Mine flower late March early April.

@Motto Matto there's a store called home depot. they tend to sell overpriced shit, but it's like a gigantic warehouse, so when i cant find something anywhere else i go there. one time they had a LOT of those trees so i got one. btw i've already transplanted it to the garden. and it seems to be doing allright. it shed a lot of leaves and grew new leaves and some berries. they are quite small, but it's a very young tree, possibly it's first harvest

Blackcaps and blueberries are native to the eastern USA, though they might be cultivated in Europe (& the Eurasian bilberry resembles blueberries). Jostaberries are a hybrid that doesn't exist in the wild.

I just saw this video a week ago and it was the first time I learned that "Pink Lemonade Blueberries" even exist. I talked about them with friends and they hadn't heard of them either. Today I found them in my local store. YEAH! they are great tasting,,, and yes slightly a more sour or "lighter" taste than a regular blueberry. I LOVE THEM!

Thanks James for the taste demo, I have most of these berries, this year we are having a heat wave in the UK and all our berries are very sweet. I stew some and freeze them into ice cubes and eat them with Ice cream or I make jellies. Has your aronia berries bore any fruit this year.

Exactly - I was thinking about planting gooseberries, but they were illegal in MA., I don't know if they are still illegal, now. (In 2021) Thank you for showing us the types and growing habits of the different berries! I did not know that gooseberries had so many thornes! I did not know that some of the berries had a trailing habit!

This is the video that started it all for me. I still love coming back to it! Love the diversity & the ease at which these berries grow. So encouraging! So exciting! One quick question for you though. I know fall is the ideal time to get the wood chips in, however, would it be beneficial to get some in in late April or May or would it be better to wait? My understanding (which is limited) is that the reason for getting them in the fall is so that by the time you do a spring planting, they have had a longer period to break down (over a wetter season which helps) but I think the real point is to give them a long time to break down before planting in them. If you getwood chips now then youre starting the process sooner which is great, just don’t plant in them right away. If you plan to plant soon you can still get woodchips and set them aside in a pile to break down and apply later. Curious to see what James will say however!

I’ve got blackberries and black raspberries planted..now and ground cherries. I’m just waiting on my gooseberry, Golden currant and mulberry bushes to come in through the mail. My back yard is my fruit orchard. My courtyard and side yard, my veggie gardens. I do need to get blueberry bushes but I’ve got to research the right time to plant them and buy them. What a collection of berries! I've never seen many of those but I'm inspired to try them out. I've found wild rasberries, blueberries, blackberries and saskatoon berries. (The latter are tart like cranberries, not my favourite). That said, they all were far better than store-bought. I read that over 12 species of blackberries grow in woods and clearings in Canada, mainly in eastern provinces and southern British Columbia. Learning about plants, gardening and foraging (I think) is extremely beneficial to people. Thanks for the great info. 🙂

Arctic raspberry ([Rubus arcticus] haven't gotten these to fruit yet in IL, not competitive in the summer), haskap (Lonicera caerulea edulis, another one that isn't very competitive in the summer but it is quick to fruit), buffalo/clove currant (Ribes odorata), lignonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea), box huckleberry (Gaylusaccia), Aronia melanocarpa (chokeberry, only good cooked, with sugar), strawberries (I like the white/yellow Alpine types because they never look ripe and therefore don't get stolen), Saskatchewan hybrid sour cherries (Prunus x-kerasis, hybrids of regular sour cherries and the Mongolian ground cherry, resulting in a very hardy, but also very convenient size to harvest, bush),... There is a lot of hype around elderberries, but the wild ones in Gainesville, FL tasted at best like spinach to me. Juice is a good pH indicator, but blech.

I planted 2 Sunshine Blue Blueberry plants and one Pink Lemonade Blueberry plant in my urban food forest...in The Sonoran Desert of Tucson, AZ! My wife posted a few videos on YardFarmAZ where they are featured, and have gone through all adjustments! Lots of new growth! Not a lot of water. LOL

You have a tropical equivalent to the blackcap raspberry (Rubus occidentalis) of the Eastern USA in the Mysore raspberry (Rubus niveus). No Ribes (currant, gooseberry, jostaberry) will work. The Brazilians bred "Ebano" blackberries from southern US ancestors like "Brazos" and possibly South American wild types. Those would probably be adapted in your area as well. Of course, you have many fruit that won't survive in New Jersey. I don't personally recommend Noni or Durian though.
