Best irons review I've seen in years. A true comparison. Not just some pro banging balls up a range but shaping balls and playing shots.

James, love your content, keep it up! I was a 19 hcp, had been playing for just under 2 years. Started off with super game improvement irons. My ball striking wasn't bad, biggest problem was losing lots of shots around the greens. Big tendency to pull my irons left, and virtually no distance control (7 iron can carry anywhere from 140 to 160). About a month ago I picked up a set of serious players irons, the Cobra King Forged MB/CB combo 2015 model. Struggled with strike the first few times I played with them until I figured them out. Since then, I dropped to 15 hcp, now breaking 90 consistently. I lost a little bit of distance - about half a club, not more than that - but my numbers are now on the dot and I'm starting to learn how to work the shots fade/draw/high/low. Baptism by fire, in a way. But for me this was the best thing that happened to my golf game. What's your view on higher handicappers using players irons? Any advice?
@grigsbypoland32036 жыл бұрын
Always enjoy your videos so I watch everything you produce even if the topic is not particularly relevant for me. Getting back into the game after a 12 year hiatus so nowhere near a mid handicapper. I just bought a set of "forgiving" clubs and I'm a long way away from needing an upgrade. You asked about weaknesses in our game. Mine is definitely my irons. A short right leg and lower back issues makes hitting them consistently well harder than my hybrids, woods, and driver. Bio-mechanics is a real thing...

I hit the 760 7-iron today with the TaylorMade graphite shaft upgrade (Aerosteel?). Increased swing speed 5 mph, Lowered my rpm’s from ~ 9,000 down to 8,000. Loved the feel. Felt very soft and workable. Currently playing with AP2 710’s and have loved them. Lovely, balanced club. Need to move from a stiff to regular shaft. Handicap is 10. Percent

Loving the channel mate, I've just purchased the 919 forged and absolutely love them, from the word go, so soft, hugely consistent. Add in that I went from reg flex shafts to c-taper 130's, so fair to say the last set weren't a good fit. Keep up the great work!

Hi James, Really liked the review format you did here on the course - particularly the shot into the wind and how they react - good to see them tested head-to-head in the real world. There's a place for launch monitors as a baseline but this comparison was really informative. Thanks again for all the effort you make in taking your content forward...

Old video but I just subbed because I saw you on Golfmates and I loved your description of not being able to judge a handicap based one one aspect. Most logical description I've heard. Me, I drive the ball ok mostly in play with respectable distance, ball striking may be where I need a little help hitting more greens, but I have a decent short game and get a fair number of up and downs from just off the green mostly, and putting is fine. That's why I'm watching! Thanks!

Here’s one for ya James. (Ps. Love your Chanel mate, loads of contest to raise my game, lower my score and get me enjoying golf loads more ). Anyway. I’m fairly new to golf (5ish full summers ). When I first started golf my brother gave me some hand me down Cleveland Blade irons that felt like butter at times and nearly broke my fingers others. My first year I got down to an 18hc after about 30 rounds. Last year I finished at just over 11. Here’s my biff. My biggest move on the HC scale happened when I was still hitting those blades. I learned hot to strike the ball consistantly and learned the percentages of playing a round. I went from beginner to 12 HC in 4 years with the blades. Then I started watching many videos and the words “mid HV irons” flooded my google search. My budget was relatively low at the time so I went to the local sports chain and grabbed a set of improvement irons. Cobra Bio Cell irons. $350 Canadian dollars. I got the before last season and man did I struggle. I could strike the ball consistently, I couldn’t shape at all and was struggling with controlling distance. I felt like a be Kinner again. Yes I dropped a point on my HC last year but that was due to learning how to “play golf and the course”. I’m asking, what set of clubs would I try? Mizuno HM or tour? TM P590? Cobra forged tech? I found that a club that looks futuristic brought my confidence down. I like the club to look like a players club, I like to feel the ball on the face. Any suggestions would help And yes, lol, I know about fitting. But my judgment again isn’t there. Looking for a standard lie off the shelf solution. Cheers mate and merry Christmas
@ScubaHockeyDoc6 жыл бұрын
Fitted this year for new clubs, top to bottom. Ping G700 looked and felt the best to me. Made a difference in my playing this year. TM P790 and Titleist AP3s were the other 2 contenders. Came down to what made me feel most comfortable as they all performed similarly. They replaced a set of Callaways from several years ago. My improvement will now come as I work on my swing over the next year or so, more so than my equipment. "Don't show this to my wife." If I "had" to buy new irons, I would look hard at the Mizunos, TM 760s and probably the Ping i500s
@edreumann83856 жыл бұрын
James, the thing that caught me the most was the stopability of the club. The fact the Taylormade landed softer is an eye opener than others testing clubs don't mention. I have a problem stopping the ball, I think due to height of flight. Thanks for info.

Totally agree with you James.. too many labels put onto mid-handicap irons and game improvement irons. I know +2 handicap guys who could game blades if they wanted too and play more GI irons. They always mention why make it harder than it needs to be. For me, my goals for next year are to remain healthy enough and work on fitness goals to help my golf goals. My bag is pretty setup as I like for now, no need to keep trying new gear as my scores are so similar regardless which irons / driver I have in play.

I recently met up with a friend that is a fitter and with his help i purchased a set i would have never looked at. Maltby irons, Golf Works. These all black PM forged cavity backs married with the KBS TGI 110 black shaft not only look amazing. They play just as good if not better than the name brands i own. all about getting fit correctly. keep up the awesome work James!!

That’s what brings me here to this entertaining , informative video. Hints, tips and recommendations gladly accepted. Naturally looking to clean it up. Currently play the MMC 5-PW. I pulled the trigger on JPX 919 tours. Hurry up UPS! Realized my iron misses are not when I miss the center. They come from not being on plane or face being open/ closed. Always loved the look of smaller heads but not quite a blade. Tours seem to fit in well. Got the lofts made a degree stronger. My goal is to go from about a ten HDCP to a 4-6 this year with more practice and steady lessons.

My AP2/3's are only 6 months old and I wouldn't swap them even for gold plated PXG's... though I'd test the Mizuno's purely for sake of Research!!! I really enjoy mooching at my local golf suppliers - not just clubs, anything golf - to see what's new. Think it's part of the fun to try to separate the science from the blarney. Have to say Huddersfield GC looks in prime condition, particularly the greens, considering the variety of weather we've had this year. Provides a great backdrop for your videos.

James, I recently purchased a set of P790 Black Taylor Made irons. I have to say I was really disappointed with the consistency of these clubs. Hit one long then be a club short. Couldn't put my finger on the issue. Went back to my Pro and tested the JPX 919 Forged. Fell in love with them immeadiaty . And purchased a set. Super consistent and workable for me. Not saying anything was wrong with the 790's but they just didn't work for me. I highly recommend the Mizuno. By the way my USGA index is 4.9.

10 hcp here..... and it's my short game that suffers due to lack of practice time. Ball striking however has always been pretty good. I would like to see a long iron and short iron test between the 919F and P760. The P760 (7iron) is a hollow speedfoam iron to promote forgiveness and distance (good for the mid handicapper). Maybe that's why it was less workable than the mizuno? The 8-P are standard forged body irons. I like that the P760's are somewhat of a combo set. Hollow body forgiving long-mid irons with standard forged scoring clubs. Great video and thank you!

I have always hit game improvement irons as a 18 handicap. I have been playing a lot and have my handicap down to a 15. In the past I have played Ping G10 and more recently Ping G400. I love the forgiveness they gave. In a recent fitting, they put me into the JPX Forged Irons which performed the best compared to Ping G410, Callaway Rogue, Srixon Z785s, JPX Hot Metal. I admit, I worry these will not have enough forgiveness for my game. I still need a lot of forgiveness. The clubs look fantastic and feel fantastic though and produced the best launch numbers.

James great comments on not being able to label clubs mid handicap. Yesterday I hit 7 of 9 GIR which is typical but i play to a 9.9. I had two double bogeys, one caused by a bad tee shot and the other a 3 putt (which I had two). My theory is to play with the most forgiving equipment you can stand to look at. The game is hard enough i'll take all the help i can get. Cheers!

Excellent video James and I am a great fan of your no-nonsense delivery style. I have just been fitted at Mizuno for a JPX 919 Tour/Forged combo and the only thing preventing me from buying them is the TaylorMade P760 as it is a true combo set, designed as one from the off - it has speed foam in the 7 and longer irons and pure forging in the 8 and shorter so the longer irons should be more forgiving and hotter and the shorter irons should feel great and offer good feedback. I will hit the P760 in a couple of weeks to decide which set I prefer but the fact that the lofts of the 919 Tour/Forged have to be tweaked is putting me off a little. However, I wish you and other (not so good!} KZbin golf stars should stop banging on about the RRP of the TaylorMades. Mizuno JPX 919 Forged 4-PW retail at £899 and the TaylorMade P760 4-PW at £1043 at a well known internet golf store. Rant over! I hope to get down to single figures in 2019 from my mid-handicap of 14. What combo set would you choose James based on my handicap and your first-hand experience of the 919 Tour/Forged and P760s? Thanks very much!

James. I have a question. What do you think the percentage is of non pro scratch player who don't use or need to use blades but instead use low to mid game improvement irons? In one of your tests you asked your self ,why am I using blades? when the test irons did all you wanted, . My golf swing started at 28 HC. Ive been using TM R7irons all that time and am now down to 10-11 HC I have had games down to 3 over the card a lot of times now. Really I would consider my self a 7HC with the old clubs. what stops me from being a scratch player is my putting and my head game. Blades would not necessarily bring my HC down..i wouldn't think. I would love you to do a test on a 3 to scratch player who uses blades and give him a set of Say MP18mmc or srixon z585, Ping I210 or TM 790 and see if they still go around as they would with their blades? That would be something I'd love to see.

Your comment about "Mid Handicap" is well taken. I never really thought about it before but it's so true that there is no such thing as a true mid handicap cookie cutter player. For example, I'm currently a very annoyed 10HCP. I will shoot anywhere from 75-83 on given day. It's largely dependent on how consistently I've been able to practice going into the round. Regardless not all parts of my game are equal: Driver - I hit my driver, a Titleist TS3, around 300yds total distance on average and hit 90% of fairways....that's not mid HCP, is it? FWY/Hybds - I'm really good off the tee and off the turf from long distance with my 3wd and 19/22* hybds. I can shape shots and I hit my spots more often than not. MID HCP? Irons - I have been around 42% GIR with my irons for the last 2 years...DEFINITELY MID HCP . Since I've adapted to my AP3s I've been closer to 65% and have gotten my 2 year average up to around 48%. Does that make me a MID HCP iron player? Wedges - I rarely miss a green from 155yds and in and am more focused on hitting spots on the green to give me an uphill putt whenever possible. I manage to hit my spot a good 50% of the time and am in the general "neighborhood" most of the time. Is that MID HCP? Short Game - Chipping is not my strong suit. I consistently get it to 10 feet on chips off of good lies but should get it closer. My technique is not the problem . It's more a lack of practice and so a lack of feel for the distance when i'm standing over the chip! Does that make me a MID HCP player? Putting - I average 1.89 strokes per round, even though, weirdly i'm right at 2.01 on GIR ... go figure. Maybe I chip a little better than I thought? :0) I average one three putt ever 4 -5 rounds, so not often. MID HCP Player? So does all that make me a MID HCP player? Or is it more that I play like a low to scratch player ( I used to play to scratch before I had kids) in some aspects of the game and stink at others, mostly the parts that require touch and control) due to my lack of playing time? I honestly don't know! This was a fun exercise....now I know what I need to work on...lol :0)

I was looking to replace my 5 year old MP59s and while I was intending to stay with Mizuno, decided to get a set of AP2s instead - a little less feel but more solid feeling...

James, been watching for awhile and have lowered my handicap 15 points. Also shooting mid 80’s. Having issues with choosing wedges for players like me who struggle with wedge confidence. Would be a great video to see!

Another great video. Really liked this one. I play Ping G with a couple Ping 700 long irons. Love the 700. I want to hit the Taylormade and the Mizuno. Great great great video!!! Thank you for the work!

Having watched the video I’d walk into the shop with the intention of buying the Mizzys. I’m pretty sure though that once I got the P760’s in my hand I’d fall in love.

Got a set of p760’s on the way in the post and can’t wait to try them out. Current play mizuno JPX ezy irons which are very forgiving but feel hard off the face. Tried some jpx900’s which felt softer but I’ve definitely bought into three hype of the TaylorMade’s. Play off 16 . Would love to be in singles figures but at 50 I don’t fancy my chances. Consistency is definitely the key, but gee is hard to do. Practice Practice Practice

With Irons unlike Drivers there are almost no gains in distance or forgiveness year on year, I had planned to change my Irons this year but couldn't find anything that gave me improvements over my current gamers. Although I love the look of the latest JPX 919's and the new Srixon Z Irons, unless they give me more I'm not going to change. Next year I'm planning to change my Wedges and will probably invest in a new Putter as that is where my shots will be gained. Goals for next year; Play more golf, practice or and enjoy my golf more (smile before and after every shot)!

Well said! I am still using 712 AP1's and don't feel I am striking the ball well enough to spend money on new irons that I don't feel I will get the best out of. I like the comment about smiling before and after every shot, that's what golf is about.

Thanks Colin, glad you liked the comment. I'm hoping that now I have reached my mid 60's I can finally cut myself some slack out on the course.

I got fitted for. Set of LYNX VT irons. Started playing regularly last summer. Fitted in February arrived in March went from 23.4 to 18.1 so far this year. None of the YOU TUBE guys even tested them. Lynx have them Only available via club professionals well worth a try

Great video! Definitely tempted to get the Mizuno. Have even put my One Lengths up for sale. Shame you’re so far away or I’d be up for a fitting.

Really enjoyed this comparison of clubs currently on my radar for next year, already 50 range balls each with the Ping i200 and JPX forged, Mizuno came out on top. Interested to put it against the P760 before deciding which to go with. Taylormade needs to be special to justify price difference though.

Nice review! I'm in the market for this type of iron. Getting back into golf with my old Mizuno MP-30 set from quite a while back. I'm considering the JPX and MP line and do like the way the new P760 look. The P760 has an MP look to them that I like. Also, I will probably test the Srixon and W/S V6 forged. Love the newest technology and excited about possibly taking my current 13 index down to single digits hopefully.

Wish I could afford new irons,, I’ve come back o golf after a 10yr break. Still playing with my old Taylormade X-03 irons, I’ll probably look at some second hand clubs but I still enjoy the reviews they’re very entertaining.

Very informative video, thanks James After not playing for many years, I'm getting back into it and looking to upgrade my old 21AD millenniums, my 7 iron is about 38 degrees Looking for something that performs best for me with accuracy and distance

Hello James. Always fancied forged clubs but being a "lazy" golfer with regard to cleaning/ drying down my clubs after use and chucking them in the garage between rounds etc have always gone for cast st/st that dont rust.How do the modern forged clubs stand up to this kind of treatment. PS I do clean faces between shots.

Hi James. I’ve been playing the TM P760s for almost a year now ... I also had a good look at the Mizzie JPX919 forged. I disagree that the P760 is not a ‘players’ club, or is really for the mid-handicap golfer. I play off 6 (could be 4 if my short game was tighter). The 760 is definitely workable and is also forgiving, especially from 5-7 iron. It’s a great club, but no one seems to talk about it ... everyone goes on about the P790 which is amazing but is too long and lacks feel & spin. The JPX919 forged felt and performed great when I tested it, but the head looked a bit chunky for my eye ... a bit big and the topline a bit thick ... wish I could hit the JPX919 forged but I need more forgiveness in the mid irons and didn’t feel 1 could blend it easily with the 919 forged. Really looking forward to testing and blending the MP20s to see if I can get the best of both worlds.

Just here to see what irons are out there after not playing golf for 10 years now. I was shocked to see that my Taylor Made 360 irons are 19 years old! I was still hitting them well though, would i hit them further and more consistently with new irons? Enjoying your reviews
@davidlepre78936 жыл бұрын
Enjoyed this on-course comparison. I happen to be considering a club change and will test the P760 and JPX919 Forged, two of the clubs at the top of my list along with the Callaway Apex CF. I currently play the Apex Pro which is a great feeling iron when on your game. But, as I approach my 70th birthday, I think I'll set pride aside and look for a little help. We'll see what happens.

Nice review, definitely interested in testing these myself before buying a new set shortly. The Mizuno JPX919 does seem to edge other brands on performance. This is also the case in other reviews.

Used to play MP52 and switched to ping a few years ago. I like the Pings but I miss that buttery feel of the Mizunos. That’s a nice looking club. Never been a fan of Taylormades. Would love to see some power drains on irons and how to correct.

I am absolutely needing to move up in irons this year. Using 10 year old X22 callaways. the Mizuno's look sooo good. I'm debating those, or the new F9's from Cobra.

Need me some new irons for 2019! My current gamer irons are Callaway x24 hot, they're so old and WAY overdo for a upgrade. I think I consider myself a mid handicapper, I score around 90ish, about par/bogey game. Watching all this reviews and vlogs about the new Taylormade p760, I need to test this out for myself and get fitted. 2019 gonna be a good year for golf! Taylormade p760 is calling my name! Chris
