LYRICS
When this old world starts a getting me down
And people are just too much for me to face
I′m gonna climb way up to the top of the stairs
And all my cares just drift right into space
On the roof it's peaceful as can be
And there the world below, it don′t bother me
No no no
So when I come home feeling tired and beat
I'll go up where the air is fresh and sweet for me now
I'get far away from the hustling crowd
And all that rat race noise down in the street
Oh on the roof, that′s the only place that I know
Look at the city baby
Where you just have to wish to make it so
Lets go up on my roof
And at night the stars, they put on a show for free
And darlin′ you can share it all with me
Hear what I say
Keep on tellin' you that
Right smack dab in the middle of town
I′ve found a paradise just about trouble proof
And if this old world starts a getting you down
Well there's room enough for two up on my roof
Up on the roof
Up on the roof
Up on the roof, ohh
Everything is alright
Everything is alright
Come on
Put down what your doing tonight
And climb up the stairs and then you′ll see me
We got the stars up above us and the city lights below
Ohh ohhh ohhh
Up on the roof

I’ve been listening to this song for a hundred years & I never ever get tired of it. James takes me with him to that roof every time. A joyful song.

As a young girl growing up in NYC on the top floor of an apartment building, when I heard The Drifters sing “Up On The Roof, “ I thought it was written just for me. Lots of great memories spent on the roof with my parents and sister: picnics, looking at rainbows, camping-it didn’t get better than that. Then about 15 years later in my early 20’s, hearing James Taylor’s rendition and falling in love up on the roof. “At night, the stars put on a show for free And, darling, you can share it all with me…” Thanks JT! ❤️

Mr. Taylor, You look & sound like you did back in the 70s when I 1st heard your music & fell in love with it!! I have loved your music since I was a young teenager in the 70's - My best friend back then loved "You've Got a Friend", as I did, and we adopted that as our friendship song. As we got older, that never changed. I would call her on her birthday at work & sing it to her thru their intercom & stuff like that. She passed of cancer in 2009 (2 wks before my mom passed). She was only 49. I had another friend in the 80's who loved Fire & Rain & so did I. But it was hard for her to listen to it. She'd had an aunt with whom she was really close - named Suzanne. She was murdered by other family members, and all the ones who loved her knew who did it, but there was no proof & the case was never solved. The lyrics in your song "Suzanne, the plans they made put an end to you" were just too realistic for my friend, but she did love the song! I could probably write a book about how much your music has accompanied me on my life's journey. I live near Charlotte, NC, & I know you are from NC, so I feel connected to you & your song "Carolina in my Mind". I lived in Virginia for 6 years, while married to my 1st husband, who was abusive. I finally divorced him & moved back home. The whole time I was in VA I sang that song all the time, & while driving HOME after those 6 miserable years, I played that song over & over & it made me so happy to know I was finally free & coming back to the place where I am happy, with my family who love me. It was so amazing! Thank you for the music that brought me joy during my life, when I couldn't find joy elsewhere, except in God. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You're amazing! 💜 God bless

Every time I watch and listen to Russ Kunkel play it's like I'm being imbued by some sage wizard reminding me how to always play what's appropriate for a song. He just commits and lays it down so well, with clarity and groove. Beautiful performance...from everybody.

WHAT A VOICE!!! Definitely one of my favorites. I remember you doing this song at Red Rocks where I was their in-house chef. We spoke and it was the highlight of my career up there. This was in the early 80s. You, the red rocks, lighting, and the backdrop. Can't get any better than that! I still go to all of your shows!! This song is so NYC where I went to school for dance!!

YES!! So many of James' songs are an ultimate uplift. The song I hold in my heart (for most of my life) that sings to me is "Secret of Life"... through a bunch of tough stuff, the simple truth in those lyrics... helps me to remember all the glorious, wonderful, and loving things we can have in our lives when we are willing to open our eyes to see it all.

You know JT... This comment section where the comments are held for review takes away from your community. Its been 8 hours and still, I only see my comment. You can't interact with others with such a delay. Let people say what they will. The negative comments will fall to the wayside.

@@jamestaylor Well, it's your prerogative. Variety is the spice of life. Unfortunately the Internet isn't the best of places and there are a lot of less-than-desirables out here that feel empowered to say what they want with false bravery behind a keyboard. Strangers can say what they want about me. It doesn't bother me whatsoever because they aren't my loved ones whose opinions matter the utmost to me. Take care and remember, there are so many fans that absolutely adore you, no matter what some total idiot says. I have seen you LIVE over 20 times, in 3 different states because I have loved and enjoyed your music. That won't change ever, no matter what anyone says. Take care.
