I finally received my Trek Farly 5 this spring after an 18 month wait! So, since I received it in the spring I hurried up and built a set of Durarock 50's up and mounted up some 29x3.0 tires and turns out to be some of the most fun I have had on a bike in years! Well done, Trek!

@ericdavidson5011 10 ай бұрын
@@zaxx1857 Yes, you will need to change the wheels. I used Sunringle's Durarock 50's with WTB Ranger tire with their light fast rolling casing. However, if you ride in a rocky area you may want to use a tire insert as you will be prone to rim strikes with this combo.

Almost 3kg heavier than the previous gen Farley 5. Crazy!! If you buy one size up on the old one and shorthen the steerer a bit and move the saddle a bit you basically have the better compromise!?

I’ve been debating between the Farley 5 and 9.6. There’s about a $1400 price difference but I’m going to have to decide soon because winter is coming.
@MsApog
@MsApog Жыл бұрын
For winter riding you don't need a carbon version. Farley 5 would be absolutely enough. Farley 9.6 is generally created mostly for a speedy riding on pavement roads. It doesn't have any significant benefits for winter riding comparing to Farley 5, and it has less grippy tyres. Yes, 9.6 has less weight, but in real winter riding it doesn`t matter. But if you have an extra money - of course you should chose the carbon version. 9.6 is much faster on pavement and have better specs.
@MrAntoniovine
@MrAntoniovine 11 ай бұрын
Disagree. I ride on snow and the lighter weight of the 9.6 ( coming for the 5) helps me go longer. But the bigger difference is the components. Really hated my 5 components!
@pe65te
@pe65te 11 ай бұрын
I ordered the 9.6 a couple of days ago. I talked to the guys at Trek who helped me make the decision. Several of them own Farleys and they all have the 9.6, which should tell you something. It came down to the components (SRAM GX is much better than micro shift imho) and weight (7 pounds lighter). I also ordered carbon bars and will set it up tubeless, which will also take some weight off.
@JayRock907
@JayRock907 11 ай бұрын
Theres only a 4 pound difference in weight between the 5 and the 9.6. once you go tubeless. (my 2022 farley 5 weighs 30 lbs, and IIRC the 9.6 is at 26lbs ) but the newer 9.6's have way more mounting options and wayyyy better drivetrain & brakesw

Looks to me like Trek is barely catching up rather than trendsetting here. This new Farley looks to be spec’d about the same as my 2020 Giant Yukon with 27.5 x 4.5, reach, and angles… even the shape of the frame and still coming in 5 lbs heavier than my Yukon. Pretty color, but not compelling enough to swap bikes for me. Great review though.

What are the advantages to the Manitou Mastodon fork on the 7? More mountain biking bouldery terrain? How does that feel in the winter? I'm all for the Farley, but can't get over the road bike style solid fork on this 5 and trying to call it a mountain bike. $800 difference just for a fork? Component upgrade as well? I'll have to check.
@JayRock907
@JayRock907 11 ай бұрын
full rigid fat bikes are usually the standard, just like how original mountain bikes used to be. Thats why i love mine, it reminds me of the old days lol -BUT by having a lighter front weight bias with the carbon fork it balances better when floating. The 7 is suited more for faster riders who like to thrash around and do crazy stuff.

@Jamesthebikeguy
@Jamesthebikeguy Жыл бұрын
Respectfully, you are a mistaken. Mineral oil's freezing temperature is -22f/-30c So if you were really riding at -30c, your brakes would have been non functional. 10f/-22c is the end of the useful working temperature range of mineral oil. Aka why on fatbikes in the winter they begin to firm up, and the colder it gets the less functional they are. This isnt my opinion, it's factual and you can look it up and find the data from credible resources. Having owned/ridden Shimano & Tektro brakes during winter months, I know for certain it is true in application as well.

@MikePlagge
@MikePlagge Жыл бұрын
@@JamesthebikeguyThere’s more to it than raw temperatures. The amount of time you are out. The temp of the location the bike is stored. Amount of wind. The brake housing. Whether or not you use bar mitts. I have also run mineral oil brakes in -10F without issue for a few hours. You don’t just go outside and they instantly freeze. It takes time and there are more factors involved than just the temperature as to how long it takes.
@ziadabdul-nour5135

From my experience, if your bike is in a warm car and you have handle bar muffs, you won't notice any issues with mineral oil gelling if your ride is up to 45 minutes long in temperatures down to - 25°C. I rode mine with minreal oil for 3 years before switching to DOT

Super good value for getting someone into a really well spec’d fat bike for sure If I was to go fat bike, which I’d like to in a couple years, I’ll get a Farley 7 and go tubeless, then upgrade the drive to XO1 transmission and put some 220mm Magura brakes on it - it’s a pricey dream build but it would be an unstoppable monster! Thanks for the review on this Farley 5 - greatly appreciate it!!

Still. Far From...Perfect. Perfect would be the adaption of mega 29x3.8 tires. 200mm front disc brake, and the removal of the rear brake. A Wren 120-130mm suspension fork option. A rear triangle that is more forgiving(bump absorbing)/frame shock, something akin to Borealis or even using inserts in the seatstays, to give the frame a mild 20-40mm of flex. Nope. I would challenge the Trek Farley line, against Wyatt, Panorama, or even Moose fat-rigs, any day...any season.

Is it a prefect fat bike? Not really... There are a few upgrade and downgrades from 2022 Farley 5, which I have been riding. Fists lets look at upgrades. (1) Slightly greater shitting range with cassette increased from 11-46 to 11-48. This is still not perfect as most of the fat and MT bikes have 11-50 or 10 -51 cassette range now. (2) improved chain protector. 2022 Farley 5 got just plastic film. Now we have a piece of solid plastic, which is more in line with modern fat/MT bikes. (3) Internally routed cables. The 2022 F5 got most of the cables routed externally. Now we have a bit cleaner look. Now lets look at the downgrades. (1) Microshift is a definite downgrade from Shimano Deore. Call me a snob, but Shimano is way more recognized brand with known quality and reliability. Time will tell if MicroShift is equally reliable, but you there is no dispute about Shimano quality. (2) Frame paint-job. I really like the my F5 2022 frame color. This may be subjective, but I find the new color much less interesting. What do you think? (3) The weight of the bike is now 3.4 lb more. This is not verified, but on the the Trek website 2023 Farley 5 is now 35.7lb. The 2022 F5 is reported to be closer to 32.3 lb, both are in M size. How is this possible? Thiker tubes, heavier drivetrain? Not sure. All-in all I like my Farley 5. The biggest limitation is the range of the drive train with insufficient gear range. My F5 has basically upper speed limit to 30 km/h at the falsest cadence I can manage. Climbing is fine, but going fast while pedaling has a unreasonably speed limit. The bike desperately needs a 12-speed drive train with a modern 10-51 cassette or a similar range. This would make this bike perfect -- which is currently NOT.
