As much as it's become a parody of itself, I will forever argue that the first movie is incredible. The fact that they played on the random sounds and happenings that creep you out when you're home alone is subtle and perfect, and they actually rely on tension nearly exclusively. I totally understand why some may not have gotten anything out of it, but I personally think it was a shining example of "Horror is the buildup to the scare, not the scare itself."

The best part is how it plays with the camera and night/day. At the start we feel safe during the day and at night we feel ok as long as the clock speeds up then later even in daylight activity happens 😀

This is also why the ending really doesn't work for me at all. Having him blow through the door and her crawling around and then morphing her face, they went way too far and "couldn't keep it in their pants" so to speak. The movie was so much more effective before that point, when everything was subtle.

I remember when this came out everyone was talking about seeing it in theater. The promos were all theater cams of people reacting to it to prove how terrifying it is. I personally have a soft spot for found footage films because its so rare that they are done well, but this movie showed how perfect the sytle is for horror. Not just telling a scary story, but showing it's "real" and could happen to anybody, including you. That makes it so much more terrifying. Definitely watch 2 and 3 at least.

I absolutely adore this movie. It's a prime example of "Less is More" in horror. The pacing is perfect, the exponential ramping up of activity until the conclusion is awesome. So many movies lose you in the 3rd act when they just go on for too long and all the suspense is lost. PA ends right when it's supposed to and keeps the horror alive by leaving so many questions unanswered. I'm glad you picked up on the sound design as well, the bassy rumbling audio cue for the demonic activity was so good, it's almost subliminal, I was barely aware of it until halfway through the first time I saw the movie. Very unsettling.

I think you may really enjoy [Rec] -- it's the original Spanish film that inspired the American remake Quarantine. I believe this film was the last true Social Phenomenon cinematic experience. I saw this movie (not film) in a packed theater with some people standing in the back on a Friday night. The young folks packed the first few rows and in absolutely synced hysterical reaction, they went off like firecrackers the SECOND the door slammed, when she slept walk and went motionless and the clock began running fast...just amazing social contagion leaping from person to person, aisle to aisle. We were all virgins in that theater and left smiling in fear, our collective certainties shaken, flipped and twisted -- but never broken.

When I first saw this movie, I saw it with the "Original" ending first. We all know why Paramount changed it, money so they could make sequels. Honestly, I prefer that original ending as it does closeout the story. It does make the ending more f'd up as the demon that possessed Katie gets 1 final screw you and gets her killed when the cops shoot her.

One thing I love about the original "based on a true story"-type ghost movies from like, the 70's and early 80's is that when the supernatural was proven to the characters, they ran the hell away and did not go back. It was Poltergeist (the original) and Entity that changed this.

This movie proves what can be done on less than a shoestring budget, using just your friends and your own house to film in. And it brought something a little unique to the table as well. I think it's the 3rd film, but it introduces a camera angle that had me on the edge of my seat every time they used it. Appreciate all the unique ways they found to place cameras. The audio in theater was insane, sound from all around. And the film is unbelievably restrained to the point that it almost fits into Cosmic Horror... you never really see the thing. I think the locked off tripod shot is so terrifying because it FORCES you to look. You're a captive audience and you can't look away. You try to, but you can't.

The first trilogy of Paranormal Activity is one of the best horror trilogy of all time. The first film is an introduction, while the second film expanding the history of the demon and Katie's history and the third one is a prequel that connect everything. The fourth, Marked one and Ghost Dimension were considered as good spin-off because the spin-off trilogy focus on the demon and the cult.

I love your reaction to this, great film, wish more reactors would pick this one up because it's a vibe and this was great content watching you appreciate it. It gets a lot of hate because there are way too many sequels that get played out, but the original is literally one of the most profitable films of all time. They made it for less than the cost of a car and it made millions and the directing and sound design and acting are all pretty damn solid for such a low budget film. Do yourself a favor and watch the second one and third one (likely good spot to stop) where you can see them play in the format even more. The second film uses the concept of security cameras and it has some great filmmaking components to it.

I think something that makes the horror so effective here is undirected it FEELS, in the sense that with most horror movies the music, camera movement, and shot composition tell us a lot about what to expect, to the point where I can usually even tell whether the tension is ramping up to an actual scare, or a fake out. But with this movie, the directing choices are so subtle most of the time that we don't feel like we are being told what to look at. We don't know if something will happen, when it will happen, where on the screen it will happen, and how spooky it will be, so instead we are just left with our imaginations running wild as we scan every shadow with hypervigilance.

This film will always be the best horror movie I have ever experienced in theaters to this day! I heard a lot of talk around this film in my town, through my school, friends, social media, everyone was hyping it up. So my brother, mom, and I went to go see the movie that Friday it premiered. sold out packed theater. Every single person in that theater was so invested in the movie that during the quiet scenes, nobody was talking, making comments out loud (like you would typically hear during horror films), all you could hear was the faint anticipated anxious wheezing from everyone haha including myself. then when the jump-scares would happen, the whole place lit up with screams! I also specifically remember these 3 full grown men that must've snuck in bcs they were sitting on the steps a few feet away from me. they were literally holding each other when the intense scenes came on haha. that was hilarious to see. Then of course at the end when the girl jumps at the camera, that place went bananas with screams! haha plus what made it even more special for me was the fact that this film is the only film to scare my family and I so much that when we got home that night, we all slept in our living room with the lights on!! haha so this movie holds a special experience for me, it was really awesome! haha love your reaction James! thanks for another great video bro! keep the great content coming because we.. are just getting started!

Everyone has had a moment in their lives where they heard something off in the distance at home and didn't know what it was and your imagination starts running wild with the possibilities. Being afraid of what you can't see is a primal fear that doesn't always get used very well. A lot of horror films show too much too soon. The second one is good too! I recommend that one. As a person who's witnessed some very questionable things in their home (not nearly as violent as the house shaking up or being thrown in a bedroom lol) I can say that this was handled really well. It felt pretty authentic.

There is like 3 differant endings too so no matter how many times you watch this movie you never know which ending you'll see (like if your friend had the dvd ect) . I love that

Good review. Sincerity is really hard to come by, especially in film review content. I like that you enjoy what you watch. One of the biggest criticism was always "Uhhhh, the boyfriend!" without any understanding that the trait has to exist in order for the story to be told. My big found footage experience was Blair Witch, and this is the only thing that's come close to it. I can appreciate it on those grounds.

The version I watched had a different ending, it was more of a closed ending so I suspect they did this one to open the door for sequels. In the one I watched, Katie kills Micah, then comes to their bedroom and sits in front of the camera in a fetal position rocking for like 2 days straight, and somewhere in those 2 days, we hear a friend come to check on them and seems to see Micah's body downstairs (or something else creepy, who knows) and runs away to call the police. The police come and as they shine a flashlight on Katie (who still had a knife in her hand) she seems to snap out of the possession and gets up to ask them where Micah is, they keep telling her to drop the knife and put her hands up but she seems too in shock to do that and they end up shooting her cause she was coming at them with a knife. Like I said, it's a closed everybody-dies kind of ending, so they must have done the one where Katie lives to keep a potential for sequels.

The ending to the final movie is different from what they originally wanted to do, and is a more "Hollywood" type ending. There's a couple alternate endings (including the one they originally were going to go with) on the blurays and you can find them on KZbin.

This one got me. I was frustrated with Micah and her. I was frightened of the entity. Together, it made for an emotionally heightened situation.

Me and my best friend saw this in theaters at the midnight premier when it came out. After that, we made it a tradition to see the following movies in the series at their midnight premiere as well. This went on up until 6th movie I think. I forget exactly, but we did it for years until we got tired of the series altogether.

I saw the same thing with that shadow on the door. Right before she turns to walk out...the shadow is moving before her......i took that as the demon was having her follow him...either by posessing her or somehow communicating to her. Not sure if there wàs another instance or it was just a random thing.

First time me and my wife watched this, we couldn't go to bed. I warned her if I woke up and she was standing above me, I'd... well... it wouldn't be good. lol But yeah, we were both disturbed by the movie, we love it! It takes a LOT to freak me out in a movie. This movie did it.

I know that many people aren’t a fan of this film, but I really enjoy it. I think it’s a fun, decently well-made, low-budget horror film. I’m a sucker for found footage so I love this one! Paranormal Activity 3 is also a super fun ride IMO

this movie definitely set off a chain of new style for horror films for better and worse. and i won't lie, i totally wussed when watching this for a first time, in the middle of the afternoon in the brightest room of the house i watched it and was still jumping. this was so well done with a budget of only 15 thousand, I believe. or at least under 20 thousand. bought by spielberg and then given to paramount. and then used footage of tested audience as a way of marketing. even having people vote online if they wanted it to be available in theaters everywhere. I loved the first three. hope you watch the next one at least.

This movie really freaked me out. Most horror movies I don't find scary because they're set in these ridiculous places and situations I would never be in. This movie though, set completely within their home in a normal environment makes it so easy to relate to them. Had to watch a Disney movie after before I could sleep 😂

I went to see it in the theater right after it came out, was a sold out show. The guy sitting beside us somehow fell asleep not too far into it (not sure if he was impaired/bored/tired) and woke up about 30 minutes later on one of the quieter parts screaming “they’re everywhere” at the top of his lungs. Scared the sh!t out of everyone in there so he left but came back about 20 minutes later. He managed to stay awake for the rest of it but it took an already tense situation and kicked it into overdrive 🤦🏻‍♀️. Loved the movie regardless, and the second one…quit watching them after that though lol.
