It would not surprise me in the slightest if I found out the Alphabet agencies were like this. I remember five or so years ago, there was a special DEA detail along with Air Force doing counternarcotic operations in Colombia that got busted for having cocaine parties complete with hookers. That's why titles like "military grade" or "government approved" do not impress me

OK, so Austin Powers does spoof the Sean Connery Bond movies. But the character is directly based on Derek Flint from _Our Man Flint,_ a spy-comedy film, and Harry Palmer from a more seriously toned 1960s spy film series staring Michael Caine. I don't care what anyone says, the Austin Powers films are legendary. Mike Myers is a master of physical comedy. Every character is iconic. They're a perfect marriage of British and American comedy, yet it never panders to either audience. Austin Powers is a (kinda) British institution that played a major role in the development of my taste in comedy (although I was deffo too young to be watching them) and it's not even about the sexual aspect of the comedy for me, it's the character work, referential, spoof and physical comedy, and for all of that, Mike Myers is a (kind of) national treasure. Anyway, I hope you do the other 2 soon!

You don't appreciate the full humor of this film unless you've seen most of the James Bond films. AP is such a cartoonish parody of Bond but treads that fine line of being able to stand on its own. The obvious jokes, e.g. Random Task and his shoe vs Odd Job and his hat, the whole Ernst Blofeld vibe of Dr. Evil, complete with cat etc, could not stand without the sophomoric jokes ( Who does number two work for?) AND the more subtle James Bond ones (The outfit changes according to Evil's ideas, the card game stand off, etc). It's very well written. I only wish the sequels had the same charm and pacing, as they kind of went off on hugely wacky tangents that detracted from the flavor, even if they did create some funny moments.

Mike Myers was huge for a while there. One forgotten gem of his is So I Married An Axe Murderer. He has a very memorable character he plays in that movie, a Scottish father...which feels like a precursor to his Fat Bastard character.

To enjoy the AP franchise to the fullest, I recommend Our Man Flint, In Like Flint, the Roger Moore Bond films (especially Moonraker) and Casino Royale (1967).
@stuartspencer2161
@stuartspencer2161 2 жыл бұрын
I would say these are more relevant to Sean Connery's Bond, than Moore's, especially with the parodies of Dr. No, Goldfinger, etc.... and the judo chop. A movie with a good parody at the ridiculousness of the Moonraker idea is Machete Kills.

I think way back in time in the caveman days or whatever the first time a human being laughed was because someone slipped and fell on their ass. Physical comedy existed before the written word or even language itself. Or at least that is what I believe.

The second movie is not great, at times lazily rehashing the same old jokes. However, the third movie makes up for it with an incredible all-star cast and all new gimmicks and gags.

If you want to see the types of movies this film parodies, then you need to see the spy films of the 1960s, particularly the Bond films. But Austin Powers' appearance is based more on Michael Caine's Harry Palmer spy films. There are three movies that will give you a good survey of the genre: _Goldfinger_ (1964), _The Ipcress File_ (1965), and _Our Man Flint_ (1966). _Our Man Flint_ is itself a parody of spy films of that time. _The Ipcress File_ is Michael Caine's first Harry Palmer spy film and inspiration for Austin Powers' look. In fact, Michael Caine plays Austin's father in the third Austin Powers film.

@@p.mc.4449 Yeah, all of the 60s Bond films (including non-Connery films), all of the Harry Palmer films, and all of the Flint films are good for understanding Austin Powers. Like Dr. Evil dressing the same as Dr. No and Blofeld while taking his facial appearance and cat from Blofeld.

Beyond James Bond, Mike Myers really does reference so many other British 60s sources. So, Mrs Kensington is basically Mrs (Emma) Peel, played by Diana Rigg, from the tv series "The Avengers." And the freezing of someone in Edward-style clothing, to be woken decades later, could that be a reference to "Adam Adamant Lives!" ? Or am i just finding references that aren't really there?! It could really just be Demolition Man 😂

It's fascinating to me (39 years old, raised in N Ireland with Bond films on repeat constantly) to see younger folks react to these films without seeing that most everything is a parody of Bond clichés. Like when he says "I love serious spy films, but I miss the ones that show the 'fun' side", I was expecting him to mention Roger Moore Bond films, and he went to Spy Kids as a reference. 😀

James, how do you know that the FBI, CIA, NSA and others don't have operations like this? Since we aren't in on the secret we don't know what they have. Every exaggeration has a grain of truth. Just something to think about. I hope everyone got the humor. Loved the reaction once again. The second Austin Powers movie is just as good but I didn't care too much for the third one. The third one just seemed to contrived and forced to me.

A funny thing about the ransom, while $1 million was absurdly low (even in the 60s) for comedic effect, $100 billion was just as absurdly high in the 90s. Which is why the "UN" characters said they couldn't possibly gather that much money. Jump to 2020 Pandemic and every few months Congress is spending multi-trillions. 1 trillion = 1,000 billions.
