@Hannah-zw9ow2 жыл бұрын
I think the brand looks like it’s made for teens and preteens (basically people going through puberty), but the “unicorn” aspect makes it look like it could be fun and suitable for younger children. It wouldn’t surprise me if a parent saw that and thought it would be great for their daughter and her friends to do at a sleepover. I will say, not to blame the mom, obviously, but if it were me I would have researched what was in the mask before putting it on a 5 year old whether it looked like it was for kids or not. Either way, there should have been some sort of warning on the packaging or they shouldn’t have marketed it towards children. Lol- I wrote this before I got to the part where the mom got it for her daughter. Guess I was right!

I'm so glad that you point out how allergenic and irritating "natural" stuff can be. I have very sensitive skin, and almost everything I've reacted to is "natural"- usually some kind of extract or oil. I find it so frustrating when I see people automatically suggest some "natural" cosmetic product when someone says they have sensitive skin. So, thank you for informing people that "natural" doesn't mean "totally safe" or hypoallergenic.

You're MORE likely to react to "natural" ingredients, not less. Our immune systems are primed to attack things that our species has encountered before, usually a lot, over many, many generations. Also just to add on to that, (at least in the food world) natural doesn’t really mean anything. People can argue that any is natural so in the end it doesn’t matter too much. Tea tree oil and aloe Vera and stuff can be amazing for your skin but like you mentioned, some people can be allergic or be irritated by it. I think it is just important to find products that work for you regardless of it being advertised as “natural” or not.

What’s really weird is that the formulators approved this product. I’m finishing my degree in cosmetics chemistry, and I’ve been in a lab on students practice - the group of people the formulators test the product on includes themselves. It’s a normal procedure to test your own product and adjust the formula when you see something is wrong. And with this kind of product, the pH level should’ve been tested for each batch - and basing of the tingling sensation, the burning and the smell, I highly doubt they were. This looks like a chemical burn more than an allergic reaction since the second one usually spreads a bit further instead of living that straight line
@peggedyourdad95602 жыл бұрын
Yep, not a chemist nor am I aspiring to be one, but I agree that these people's reactions look more like a first-degree burn than an allergic rash.

their answer is bulls**t : yes, composition varies completely from batch to batch of each botanical extract, but each batch is analyzed post-production and u get its full chemical composition before using it. no brand in their right mind would start mixing anything without the full analysis sheet beforehand. then, there is contamination (by micro-organisms), which is another issue.

Looking at the packaging of YesTo's products as a whole, I feel like they've been aiming for the pre-teen/early-teen/middle-school-aged demographic with their entire brand. My aunt bought some "Christmas themed" face masks for me and my daughter 2 Christmases ago. They were cute and had little snowmen on them. Well I'm not sure where she got them, but I did check the dates and they were still supposed to be in date, and the ingredients looked pretty basic with low percentages. Let me tell you. I'm not very used to actives cause I don't use them often (I don't think I need much, there's salicylic acid in my cleanser but that's it), but these did NOT look like they were meant for people who used them all the time, they looked like something fun to do for one night like after hot cocoa and siting by the fire. I tried mine first so I could decide if I was going to let my daughter use it. BIG ASS HELL NO. I had it on my skin for 30 seconds and I could feel my face burning, not tingling like "hi I'm menthol, nice to meet you." BURNING. After a minute I had to take it off, and my skin was so red it looked like I'd been sitting in the sun for two hours with no sunscreen, and my face felt swollen. There was absolutely no way that was touching my daughter's face. I feel bad for the people in this Yesto story. You're supposed to be able to trust that a formulation won't burn your skin, even if you yourself might have an allergy it shouldn't look like you've been baking in the sun after just three or four minutes. And for the packaging to literally say "if it's tingling it's working" is awful. I feel like these masks should tell people to patch test before using the entire mask.

Packaging wasn't memorable at all tbh. I was so scared when it started getting itchy and hot. I thought it was a gimmick since I had never felt the same with other masks. I had to check the package and saw the tingling warning that said you should only remove it if it got too uncomfortable. I powered through but not gonna lie, I should've removed it immediately. Thankfully the heat and itchiness only lasted some minutes after I took it off. I just found out how scary that actually was now that I've been recommended this video.

My daughter is 5 as well and it’s important to know that children’s skin is very sensitive, but also very resilient to the elements. Their body is in its prime for warding off skin ailments adults are normally stricken with due to age. Any masks that promote evening skin tone, age-fighting ingredients, etc., are for people that have skin already showing signs of what the mask is trying to “cure”. I understand that this mom was trying to initially find a way to do a mom/daughter spa day, so it’s just a matter of educating yourself as a parent to prevent your child from being harmed by products that are intended for teens/adults. The only downside to this is that common sense is unfortunately not as common as we think it is, so we are going to hear about things like this time and time again.

This for some reason reminds me of an experience I had with this TonyMoly “tomato cream”. It claims to brighten your skin, and is made with tomato extract. The packaging is extremely cute, it’s just like a toy tomato that you open with cream inside. Let me tell you, my face has never burned that much before. I would start tearing up, my skin felt sensitive afterwards, and it honestly felt horrible. Thankfully I did not get an allergic reaction, but i think that product messed with my natural skin oils. Mind you I was a teenager back then, so I didn’t know about skin types and what is supposed to be good or bad. I later found out that I have dry, sensitive skin that can only work with light, watery, hydrating products. The absolute torture that my skin went through to figure it out is honestly saddening for me, and all because of cute packaging and clever marketing.

I have a couple of theories about what could have happened here. I'm a chemical engineer, but I'm not a cosmetic chemist so I can't say for certain without doing a deep dive into the ingredients, specifically I'm interested in the ingredients that comprise the "glitter paper mask" portion of this product, but I'll still present my general thoughts. this could be a reaction to citrus, since grapefruit is a known citrus allergen, however I'm not too convinced since most of these people have had other citrus products in the past with no issue, I would assume. most people that have a broad allergy like citrus are aware of it. that leads me back to the mask component itself, which is unusual. I've never seen a glitter paper mask on the market before. most glitter masks are gel masks. even when I search for a "paper" glitter skincare mask right now, I can't find one. this makes me wonder if this "paper" glitter mask component of the compound mask is a YesTo patented product, or simply an unusual product that isn't commonly used. most glitter masks are gel, like I said, in order to ensure that the glitter part is totally encased in hydrating skin safe gel, so that the glitter doesn't irritate or even touch the skin. so I'm a little suspicious of this "paper glitter mask" component of the product, since I'm completely unfamiliar with anything like this in a sheet mask with glitter. so the glitter mask itself could easily be the skin irritating culprit, however, based on the look of the irritated skin, I think it's more likely that the combination of this "paper" glitter mask and the liquid formula caused some type of reaction once packaged together, in the absence of chemical stabilizers/preservatives, since many of these "natural" brands don't use appropriate (or enough) chemical stabilizers to prevent breakdown of the actives or reactions between ingredients. sometimes "natural" brands will just slap some very bizarre edible or common ingredient into the formula, in this case grapefruit, which can be problematic as well. I would have to do more research on possible reactions between the components of this mask, and any stabilizers that were in the formula initially, but I do wonder about that issue. it's possible that testing was done on the liquid component of this mask individually for another product (a regular, non glitter grapefruit vitamin C mask), and then the company YesTo choose to place this pre-made liquid formula into packaging with a new paper glitter mask at a later time, and that the two components of the final mask, the pre-existing liquid formula and new glitter paper sheet mask, were not tested together, leading to an unforeseen reaction between the glitter mask component and the liquid formula. of course, it's also possible that the liquid formula was just bad in and of itself, leading to continuing chemical instability once packaged, which lead to skin irritation. anyway, those are just my thoughts. I feel so sorry for the 5 year old girl. I highly recommend just pretending when it comes to skincare with very young kids. you can buy packs of cloth sheet masks on Amazon that have no liquid, just the mask part. it might be fun to just place them in water, and DIY cute packaging for them with kids for a spa day. if not, please only use gentle ingredients like Aloe Vera, Hyaluronic Acid or Squalene on children's skin, and remember to put sunscreen on your child every day! especially on their faces and arms, even in winter. it's extremely important that the skin of your child is protected, even at a young age. consult with a dermatologist about skin safe options for kids, in terms of sunscreen, though any gentle moisturizer with sunscreen and no actives made specifically for the face should be fine, but please do consult a doctor on this matter first. I hope the victims win their lawsuit! I also can't stand these fake "natural" brands.

I had this same thought, but I thought maybe they were reacting to metal in the mask rather than there being a chemical reaction happening.

I'm a science gal, not a pseudo science gal. Labeling like "clean" and "natural" are sus; I also have never been a consumer of organic products nor have I ever cared about GMOs. Because science and facts do not support MOST of the claims about clean, natural, organic and non-GMO products. Companies use scare tactics to basically trick people into believing their products are safer and healthier. Anyway, I haven't used this brand in a very long time. I am not at ALL surprised about these issues experienced by people who used their product. Not because of their brand specifically, but due to the nature of brands that use this type of advertising and promotion. I automatically become suspicious of any brand that presents themselves this way. I understand it's very difficult as a consumer to sort through all of the claims and ingredients and all of that. BUT, consumers who demand these "clean" beauty products REALLY need to educate themselves about what this means.

The environmental implications give me the ick (though I’m not trying to eco shame sheet mask lovers, I’m sure they’re a drop in the ocean and I’m by no means zero waste) and my experience with them just did not make it worth it at all! Find it so awkward to wear, and don’t see any results that I can’t get from slugging up

yea I’m not a fan of sheet masks either… specially as they’re pretty bad for the environment.. better to use a silicone reusable one that you put over the top of your serums for 10 minutes coz at least you know exactly what your putting on and putting the sheet mask over… I dont even use the silicone ones coz I just don’t like the feeling of having something covering my face lol this is terrible and I feel so bad for them people… they should recall that product completely and not just repackage it and sell it… money grabbing company

Oh man you took that mask off and I said out loud "OH NO". Your skin was definitely red at first but it seemed to calm down pretty quickly.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who thought "Tomato? On my skin? What? Why?" I'm not even allergic to them or anything and I like many foods with tomatoes but that just doesn't feel like a "refreshing, clean" scent that would normally go in a skincare product.

I remember when that face mask was super big, a friend of mine had a pretty nasty reaction. Thank you for talking about this, companies need to be held accountable for their shady and irresponsible actions. Love this new series, love listening while working on my school work. It keeps me sane lol.

My impression from the packaging is that it's aimed at pre-teens/young teens, who have started puberty and are starting to get oily skin. I wouldn't put a "brightening" face mask on a 5 year old child, because the skin of young children is much more delicate than adult or adolescent skin. Products meant for reducing oil on adolescent skin would be too drying for a young child. I think ideally the parent would say "I do love how shiny that is, but that's for older kids, how about this one?" It sounds like this product would have been dangerous even for an adolescent or adult too. It isn't the parents fault how dangerous the product is. Most products aimed at 12 year olds would probably cause some dryness/itching/irritation if used on a 5 year old, but not chemical burns.

Yesto was a brand I had one of the worst reactions to, my face broke out into rashy hives. If I remember correctly, it was the detoxifying cleanser that caused my skin to react.

I have tried different YesTo products with my Granddaughter, but not the masks. She has scalp psoriasis and the YesTo hair mask twice a week keeps it from flaring and works beautifully. However, she has tried the spray and the shampoo and they don’t work well at all. The only product we have found from this brand that works is the hair mask. I haven’t tried any of the face products with her and don’t plan to. She and I will sometimes do a face mask or under eye patches that I bought or received in my boxycharm. I’m sure this brand has some other things that are fine but I haven’t had luck finding any with the exception of the hair mask. Thank you for your review and opinions James! It really helps 😊

The second you said there was grapefruit in it I knew what happened. I have severe allergies so I have a dermatologist, allergist etc.. grapefruit is super harsh and is more often used for a natural chemical peel.

I’ve only watched this one video, but I enjoyed it a lot, even though I’ve never been very interested in the beauty guru kind of thing or using a bunch of products on my skin (really, I should take more care of my skin so this was a wake up call). You sound like you know what you’re talking about and even brought expert opinion. Very professional.

I used a Yes to product way back when I was in high-school (2013 I think) and it absolutely destroyed my face. I bought it because it was featured in Seventeen magazine as a great drug store skin care brand with a affordable pricing. It was one of their scrubs and after a couple of days I had a major breakout all over my face. I never struggled with that much acne until I used one of their products.

I can’t remember the exact product, I think it was a cleanser, but the only thing I’ve tried from YesTo really irritated my skin. However, I had a housemate who swore by their tomato stuff; I swear she had one of everything.

Years ago I used one of their grapefruit sheet masks and after 2 min my face felt numb yet also a burning sensation. I took it off because I knew something was wrong and my face was VERY red but I think I took it off before I could get a chemical burn. That kind of solidified my avoidance of this brand. I used their tomato moisturizer in high school/ early college and that was fine but nothing they’ve ever made has “wowed” me

oh my god, i don’t usually watch skincare content, but i saw this in my recommended and recognized the mask in the thumbnail. it genuinely burned my face, thankfully the tingling feeling seemed to get wayyyy too uncomfortable so i took it off early, but i still had burns for 2ish days afterwards. i thought it was just my skin type or something i was allergic to, but damn, this is crazy.

Any skincare brand that uses "natural" marketing, clean beauty, and uses "detoxifying" gets a no from me. It's like supporting an MLM. I don't care if it "works", I don't support lack of ethics and misinformation. Just my opinion, though.

Since becoming an Esthetician I have not used a single one of their products. I had previously used some of the tomato line and the cucumber and cotton lines (acneic and sensitive). But added fragrance especially for a "naturally based" line is a no for me. I've had reactions to lines in the 40-125 dollar range with added fragrance as well. I avoid citrus as well due to my prone to redness and dehydratedness in my skin. Just need actives that have hydrating, calming, buffering (yes naturally derived) ingredients to round out the formula and that has given me the best results.
@hannajung75122 жыл бұрын
@@beautyfullyopinionated I am not sensitive to fragrances, and still I hate it in face products. A body lotion that smells nice? okay... but I hate having layers and layers of different smells on my face. and I hate it when skin care interferes with the smell of my parfume, I use even fragrance free anti-perspirants.

Thank you James. Before I discovered the wonderful skincare community on KZbin, I occasionally used sheet masks for "self care time", but looking back now I realize these things either did nothing, or were irritating. Not to mention the horrific amount of waste. Someone gave my young daughter some sheet masks for her birthday last year -- I confiscated them, no way babe. 🦄

I’ve tried both the sheet mask and the mud mask formula of this brand and I have to say the mud mask one seems more cooling on the skin but the sheet mask definitely burned a little I can see why these products would be way too harsh for a child’s skin

I have INSANELY sensitive skin, and I can't really use any skincare products because of it because I know that almost everything will make me break out. This is such a big fear of mine. I'm glad there wasn't any permanent damage!! The closest thing to this that happened to me was when I was 6, and it was with a dress. It was a Barbie of Swan Lake costume thing (that I loved for that one day) and like, an hour into wearing it, I felt incredibly itchy. My mom noticed a red patch on my arm, got me out of the costume, and found that pretty much my entire body was all red and swollen. It was awful, because the red patches would bleed, so I had wounds that took an entire MONTH to heal because they would reopen when I wore regular clothes. :( And I never got a pretty dress like that from a store again. Even for Halloween. I decided that very same year that I would make my own costumes so I would never be a walking rash ball ever again.

The only masks I've used without a reaction have been by Andalou Naturals. I've had nasty reactions to The Body Shop before, and it was not fun. But I do have known reactions to different things, and I know a few ingredients to avoid, mostly anything with parfum/fragrance/perfume giving me rashes, so it's very hard to find even natural products that don't have those synthetic scents. I can't use stuff from Lush anymore, and it's hard to find things that work for me, which makes me glad I found Andalou and Carina Organics, but I never really cared about packaging, as long as it works. And I like when things are mostly scent free, and then have some kind of nice plant extract at the bottom, like a tiny amount of mint, or rose, but not as a main thing.
