This man is on here trying to give really useful information and of course a bunch of ass holes with nothing to offer are trying to pick it apart and start something, while having nothing to contribute themselves and by the way Africans don't see themselves as just African, each African I know can tell you exactly which ethnic group they belong to and the language / dialect, and belief that make them different from the other group around them and they can spot the members of the other groups just by their facial features. Sri Lankan are some of the blackest people on the planet and their Indians. So when people have nothing positive to contribute they need to learn just to STFU.

Why are people acting like black people are super sensitive? If you say something racist, then you’ll get called out. It’s that simple. This video was extremely informative and MUCH needed. The only people making this a racial thing are the people pretentiously claiming he doesn’t need to worry about people calling him racist. Only be worried if you say something racist. It’s not rocket science. Thank you for this video!!! I can’t tell you enough how important this was, at least for me! Every time I mention this to a tattoo artist they get offended as if I’m claiming they aren’t talented enough to tattoo on dark skin when I’m only saying I want to avoid certain colors to ensure it shows up nicely on my skin. Again, HUGE THANK YOU!

As a black person myself, I can tell you that many black people blow things out of proportion. Some Examples, Karrueche got a lot of hate for dressing up as Princess Tiana and a white person on Insta said a hair product wouldn't work for most black people because we tend to have more kinky hair and people started calling her racist.
@sashanoel8766

Pink if people’s biggest fear is someone having something to say then people need to keep their thoughts to themselves. In the age of social media anyone can claim themselves to be of a particular ethnic group and speak on behalf of a whole race. If you know you’re not being racist or coming from a malicious stand point then you should be prepared for whatever backlash comes your way and defend your position accordingly as the gentleman in the video did. But to apologize preemptively for a whole community of people who have not done anything to him is ridiculous. Black people don’t need to go on apology tours to protect ppl’s feelings about racism. This comment feed blew things out of proportion given that no backlash has even taken place. He provided great information and this sideshow apology tour ended up being quite distracting and not so productive. I hope he continues to make more videos informing tattoo artists how to perform better tattoos on people of color moving forward because this is a growing issue.

This is a real issue and I’m beyond grateful for him doing this. What I don’t get is people preemptively making it about race when he made a mere mention about being apprehensive but overcame that because he recognizes the importance of the information over his hesitation. The comments in the feed have been ridiculous

I tattoo darker skin all the time, I don’t get a lot of photos because when darker skin is swollen after the process it catches light really bad, and I’m not a photographer , but I do still attempt when the tattoo is cool, so about a quarter of the photos I take are useable which means, not a lot of dark skin in my portfolio……. And it does matter to have SOME examples, because I’ve seen ppl tattoo the same way they would light skin, the approach is just slightly different, bigger, bold, larger skin breaks to open the tattoo up so that it’s all readable and can be seen well, leave out the small details

Nah, it's because a lot of white people are protective of our culture (tattoos in Europe have been around for thousands of years, even the 5000 year old European mummy Ötzi the Iceman had over 20 tattoos) and a lot of them don't want black people stealing our culture. Which is dumb in the US, since black people in the US are around 33% white anyway so it's as much of their culture as it is any pure Europeans.
@tajtucker1705
@tajtucker1705 6 жыл бұрын
@@stanlee7958 I feel like you're making a huge blanket statement that has something to do with your own views. It has nothing to do with people stealing European culture because I can bet you 90 percent of white people don't even know what you're talking about. If you just want to say you think people are stealing "white culture" by getting tattos then say that because you've replied to multiple people's comments passively saying the same thing.
@Lil_refresha
@Lil_refresha 6 жыл бұрын
@@stanlee7958 umm, every culture has forms of tattoos. White people didn't invent tattoos. They've been around way longer than 5000 years and before even white/pale skinned people existed. But I agree SassShea, we should stop acting like we don't have differences.
@stanlee7958

@@Lil_refresha African culture had scarification. That isnt the same as tattoos.The oldest know tattoos are on Ötzi the Iceman. A white European who is over 5000 years old. From what any anthropologist can tell white people are the first with tattoos, and have been getting them for thousands of years. @Taj Tucker 90% of white people can't tell you how Halloween started, that doesnt mean Halloween isn't a part of white culture.
@Lil_refresha
@Lil_refresha 6 жыл бұрын
Just because it's the oldest found doesn't mean that there weren't more before them and that they invented tattoos. There are plenty of cultures that have long histories of tattoos but those people could have lived in places that don't preserve human remains, and more specifically skin well, or people could have cremated bodies which would lead to a lack of evidence concerning tattoos. My point is that just because archeologist found the oldest known tattoo on a white person doesn't mean they invented it. Like I said before there's evidence like art and tools to suggest that tattooing took place in a variety of places, on a variety skintones, in a variety of cultures thousands of years before that Iceman was dated. So it's unlikely that his people invented it. No archeologist would ever assume that the remains of one person they just found meant they were the beginning of a specific human behaviour/art form. That makes no sense.

THIS is WHY I have NOT gotten a tatoo. I applaud you for taking the risk to inform educate and empower. This was VERY crucial for MANY people out there. NOTHING but #FACTS. As a cosmetologist I totally agree and can confirm that the color wheel is your BEST friend. Just like hair has different tones and textures and those textures and tones change based upon the color deposited or withdrawn from its natural base. Same with make-up. RiRi understands the levels of brown and BLACK beauty unlike many of her peers in the same field. I would appreciate someone who knows about my skin and at least make me aware. Some cosmetologist can refuse services because we know the risks of some procedures especially with chemicals. It your duty and responsibility as a professional and artist to be as considerate and compassionate about your clients!!! Thats what a lot of businesses miss out on. The relationship and integrity amongst client and service provider. If anybody BLACK is upset about THIS then they choose to STAY ignorant. Keep educating BLACKS and POC and as a POC yourself its a good look and honor to promote preventative measures for other POC. God bless YOU

This is factual if you've learned any African history vs. say Pacific Islands. African tribes did a lot of branding and cutting that created keloids to make them three dimensional which made the permanent marking more visible paint was used more for ceremonial purposes as opposed to Pacific Islands who did intricate tattooing on their bodies. It's refreshing to watch an honest video. Great work

African Histories. It is scarification not branding, most of them are of a ceremonial, spiritual or historical meaning from simple representation of daily life/Animals to complex ideograms representing events related to one Genealogical/Cultural/personal History. Not All African Cultures do scarifications. I'll give you an example from the area I come from, West & Central Africa. In my dad culture, scarification on New Born children was a regular occurence for protection vs bad spirits,there were placed in different spots based on gender and social status. My mother side does not have tatoos per say but there are body modifications with tatoos,but only for highly initiated people. Within the same region throughout the same country even, say Nigeria, Igbo (used to) have Uli which is permanent to semi permanent drawings on their bodies only made by women. Signifier of many a thing ,on the other hand Fulani one of the largest nomadic culture in the world, has both scarifications and sort of henna like tatoo with way longer hold on the skin that can be made permanent. And it changes from area to another. It is way more diverse and intricated that the information out there.

Red, purple, green, light to mid-tone blues (may come out a little greenish depending on the color). I even have orange and yellow (golden yellow, not bright) It's definitely possible! I appreciate everything this guy has to say. He is the first tattoo artist that I have ever heard discuss tattoos for dark skinned people. Usually we are not considered at all, but this gentleman not only did his research, he gives detailed steps and what to look for in getting a good tattoo and a good tattoo artist. He even goes over the different shades of dark skin and what to look for in a good tattoo for each shade. he is very thorough and gives a lot of good and practical advice. He's great!!

You definitely kick the real my dude. Surprising how many don’t know about the scarring. I’m black, probably a 6 to 6.5 on your scale. Both arms half sleeved, Japanese yakuza style. Bits of red here and there. I got lucky with a very experienced artist that wasn’t scared to tell me straight. Personal opinion, stay with the black and gray my brothers and sisters! And do your homework! This is forever. Great vid man, much love from LA 👊🏾

You have to research artist that "specialize" in dark skin. There's a PHENOMENAL artist here in Atlanta that makes colors pop and so vivid on dark skin it's crazy! This is AFTER the tattoo has healed too. He is doing my sleeve this winter (although he doesnt know it yet) his name is MIYA BAILEY. Edit: Got my sleeve and its BETTER than I could've ever imagined. I ALWAYS get compliments. Leg sleeve coming soon. 😎

We do live in a very racist and biased society. Darker skinned ppl are often neglected and left out of discussions involving many topics. If ppl of the majority would understand that instead of geting upset every time someone mentioned this disparity, I believe more helpful and useful information like this can be well received. You did an awesome job of stating real facts coupled with your experience. We need more dialogue like this across other areas of concern involving darker skin. It's not just a complexion.

Yo, this was a pretty good video. I'm currently getting a tattoo done in Japan and I talked with the artist for a good 3 months about design, possible flaws, and issues with long term details. You also did a good job with "word choice" when diving into different shades without sounding like a try-hard. Good job.

AMAAAAZING NEW INTRO! Very informative video. People have to understand how pigments work on dark skin so that tattoos can be done properly. It’s not racism, it’s science. Even then, there’s not a lot of tattoos on dark skin online, unfortunately, so people can’t really get realistic inspiration. Great as always 👍🏻

I gave you a thumbs up because your video is very professional and informative. This is how these things should be addressed. No drama. No disrespect. Straight facts accompanied by a thorough explanation of how you came to your conclusion. Explaining the "why" makes things a lot easier to understand and to accept.Excellent job sir. (I don't even know how this got in my feed as I have no interest in tattoos but give credit where credit is due)

People: “you should discuss undertones of the skin colors!” Guy on video: literally already did that in the video People: “you should include photos of dark skin that you’ve tattooed!” Guy on video: literally already did that in the video People: “include a chart that includes different skin tones you refer to!” Guy in video: literally already did that in the video Moral of the story: if you’re going to complain, at least make sure you’ve watch through the entire video before you start critiquing the presentation.

The guy with the skull and rose his arm is my coworker xavier price. He’s probably a 7 on the scale even though it looks lighter in the pic. He’s pretty dark. He is also in the pic with the hand tattoo of a triangle and eye mashup. Look him up on ig @xavierpriceart to verify. I know this comment is late, but I appreciate your support. He’s the darkest person I could reference cuz it’s hard to photograph tattoos on skin darker than his. I mentioned that in the video too

I found this video very informative! I'm so glad I came across it. I have 3 tattoos, all of which are flowers. I believe my skin tone falls in the 6 and 7 category. He was spot on when he mentioned the lighter colors blotching up on my skin type because that happened to me. Thankfully, I live in Georgia. A year after I received that tattoo, an artist was able to fix the blotches with a reddish-pink tone color that turned out looking really good. I plan on getting more flower tats because I'm a flower child, so I will keep everything he said in mind when it comes to choosing colors. Thank you for making this video, James. Now I'm going to share it with my friends.
