Knew a horse like this one. When in her stall she would learn into people, either someone would end it with a push, or picking up a foot to clean it usually worked best … she liked her feet cleaned.
@NadyaPena-012 жыл бұрын
I love this approach. I agree with you that one of the best things to do is not make a big deal out of "bad behavior" that really is just coming from the horse's lack of understanding or education. They're not out to ruin our day. They just haven't practiced this stuff enough. As a horse owner I know it's my duty to prepare my horse for their basic care like this but sadly, it seems too many owners don't take that duty seriously. Anyhow, It's refreshing to see a farrier being compassionate and understanding of the horse. I've had a farrier deck my horse in the chest because she wouldn't stand still. And guess what, she still didn't stand still after that, if anything she was more anxious. I know it's tough to do a job when the owner hasn't prepared the horse, but in those types of situations, it's better to be patient.

Just found an Amish guy.tho!....I bot 2 Blocker Ties to hopefully b able to crosstie one up.....but what should I do with the other horse? So tying a horse when developing its foundation is very important. You say you have two posts that are 12 feet apart.Do you tie the horses to the post separately? if it was me with my horses , I would start Tying separately to each post as a daily regiment increasing the length that they were tied each day until finally they would be comfortable being tied to the post why the other was being Trimmed by the farrier. I hope this helps.

Im ordering another Blocker Tie ring so they dont panic and pull the shelter down....Im here by myself....thanks again James
@JamesWMoody2 жыл бұрын
Time is definitely not on your side. Whatever you do do not tie those horses to the shed if there is a chance of them pulling it down. You may have literally put the wagon before the horse. Usually Amish farriers are pretty resourceful so I would take direction from he or she. It sounds like there is unnecessary risk to life and limb in your situation, maybe you should consider postponing the session until you can get the proper set up for what you will need while your horses are being worked on. In the end when working with horses it is a good day when no one gets killed and no one gets hurt.

Thank you for the question. So if I believe that a horse may bite me or someone else holding the horse while I work I will simply refuse to do the horse before further training with the horse is done. If a horse is biting people then there is a underlying issue that needs to be properly sorted out before the horse can be trimmed or shod. I hope this answers your question.

Gave up shoeing 15 years ago, need to supplement my income now and will be getting back into it soon. I use to take horses like this but only on the condition the owner would pay me to train it how to behave for the farrier. Otherwise I would walk. I charged $300 minimum for one lesson which usually lasted about 2 hours. Used a round pen John Lions style to teach the horse to stand still and not fight. By the time I finished, the horse would stand untied very still for me and I could do as I pleased. I also enjoyed training and trained many young horses to take a rider. Lots of fun but these kinds of horses can be dangerous to your health. Not sure that I will even bother now with horses like this as I am now 54. I shall see. Thanks for sharing the video.

She is very snippy about her feet both front and back and after a year of this, she refuses to change her opinion on her hoof care. She has also begun to protest by pawing the ground when I take her right front. She didn't used to pull it away and paw but now she does EVERY time! There is nothing wrong with the hoof, she's just stubborn. How can I keep a hold of this horses feet long enough to clean and trim? She just keeps pulling it away time after time and attempt after attempt.

There are some methods that I use but the kind of behavior you are posting about takes time to correct and I would suggest finding a trainer or blacksmith, that would put the time in with your horse as they are trained professionals. This is not something that I could recommend over KZbin. I would have to be there to assess the horse.

I wish you could come to Europe and help me with the little mare I started a few months back. She is 6 and I am the first to handle her feet. She is getting better. She did all the leaning into me and snatching the feet away and it too me a while to get her to give me her feet. She is good on all feet except the front left...a bit sticky on this leg. Is it possible for a horse to struggle with balance on one side and not the other? Today I put hoof boots on her front feet which I have done a few times successfully. But today I had to use rope to hold up her feet to get the boots on. (I am a small woman) She broke into a sweat. Have you seen horses sweat over something like this? So much respect for you James. And you a a huge man...no owner you can take on these difficult horses
@JamesWMoody3 жыл бұрын
Flights across the pond are cheap right now, and I’ll travel for food LOL so it sounds like your mare he’s just being stubborn with the 1 foot more than that others. You need to find a way to apply pressure to the foot when she snatches it down and release the pressure when she picks it up. This way she will have a better understanding of what you were asking her to do. Most important thing is to hang in there and do not end on a bad note. Some days will be easier than others, but I always end on a good note with lots of praise when she picks her feet up.🤠

I'm working with my colt on picking his feet up for the farrier now. I just got a hold of him and his feet are long, any tips? I dont want him behaving like this for the farrier. Its embarrassing as an owner and bad for the horse. Because his feet were left so long and he hasn't been taught, and needs a farrier ASAP, so the first trim, I am facing that he will need to be sedated next week. There is no teaching them this in a week. I hope to have him at least tolerant of it for the next trim in 8 weeks. I can practice tapping him with the hoof pick, and I can practice gently rasping because I'm no farrier, but other than that I am stumped
@semtech304 жыл бұрын
Repetition wins. Ask for each foot daily, use your pick, get them used to it as a routine. Bit of fly spray, get them used to it. Couple strokes with the rasp and put the foot down. Each horse has it's own level of tolerance. Endeavor to persevere.

@@JamesWMoody he was going real slow with it, just doing the pressure / release exercises Re: having his hindquarters and feet handled, he had to actually use a rope to pick up its feet at first. Over the course of the video you could see there was improvement in the horses reactivity-but it was going to take a few sessions to get it really trained-it was a very green, young horse-looked about 1-2 yo. I’ll look up the video and give you the link!

The horse is not opposed. Can you do a video of how you would train an oppositional horse?
@JamesWMoody3 жыл бұрын
So not to dramatize the horse if horses or any worse than this then I will not do Ferrier work on the horse. I will start with some basic training techniques to build a horses foundation and gain leader ship and trust from horse. So I don’t think there’s any video that I could make with an unruly bandit of a horse, Or a horse that just doesn’t know any better.

This guy did a great job on a horse that has no training or worse, bad training. I have a big 3 yr old mare right now that I’m working out the kinks on to get a good trim. Lots of ground work with the rope and picking up her feet. Get your horse to move off pressure and respect you. Tie a soft rope around his foot and lift then lead him by the foot when ready. Don’t put all the work on a farrier. Most of us aren’t as big as this guy. My mare would rag doll me if I fight her so I have to work her slower and understand her.

I wonder how she would have been if those dumb flies would have left her alone . Isn't there a spray they can use on the flies. I have seen a horses face covered in them or mosquitoes
@JamesWMoody4 жыл бұрын
Great point. She would have done considerably better with the fly spray. But because I was just trimming and not shoeing I sort of wanted her to tolerate the flies right along with me.
@ka24383 жыл бұрын
@@JamesWMoody I think it would be better to just spray her first. She’ll get the experience of no flies biting her which will make a better impression of the trimming process. She already knows how to handle fly bites but you are restricting her and she can’t reach the itch. She associates trimming with torture. I appreciate your kind manner and patience very much.

Just wondering if you would have any advice on how to train a horse that tends to hop around and pull back every time you left up their foot? It was my first time having the farrier around and It was really embarrassing that she couldn't get done (She also decided that it was time to try and walk over me(so working on that too now)), I'm going to work on a lot of picking up her feet, tapping her hoof with the hoof pick plus leg massages and making sure she knows it's not a big deal as she's been hit and man handled before I had her but I'm a bit nervous on the kicking of the hind legs.

You a good sized man and are strong enough to hold that leg up but some farriers are not. It looks like it maybe uncomfortable for her to stand with her leg so high and out. Maybe make it more comfortable for her to stand?

Might help to use fly repellant. or if you can get a fan to put on her...if she tolerates that. keeps twitching flicking her tail, etc...must be getting eaten alive! maybe? also wonder if working her a bit before...she might like a rest and might stand a little better...just wondering.

I had a farrier that Jabed a Arabian of mine with the rasp that did not have a handle on the point of the rasp. Now I was going to a horse show the next day and and the horse pulled a shoe. I called the farrier so he had to come out again. He was angry about that and so. This horse was really good at picking up his feet and was always easy for the farrier but he was angry. Horses can and do pick up on a persons demeanor. This farrier stuck that horse in the gut and the horse was trying to protect himself the only way he could. Would not let the farrier take a hold of his rear right hoof. That farrier ruined that horse for anyone that even wanted to just clean his hoof out. No matter what hoof you wanted too do anything with. He poked him so hard it was bleeding. This guy was a absolute jerk.
@JamesWMoody3 жыл бұрын
Probably goes without saying but I would never ever let him touch my horse again! And I would put the word out on him. With time though in proper training you can get your old horse back.

Regardless friend! Harpooning a horse with the sharp end of a rasp nice or otherwise will only worsens the horses behavior and furthermore it’s inhumane!
