You also don't have to click the tiny little folder and stop-folder icons by default. You can make a track and drag the subtracks underneath it until you see the blue line get shorter.

Another thing you can do with the solo and mute is that in order to solo or mute multiple contiguous tracks, you don't have to select them all and press mute. You can click and drag on the mute button across multiple tracks and it will mute all of them.

This is great video, thanks James. I was wondering, as an ex-Ableton user, what i miss the most in Ableton is its search engine, it´s so fast. For example, if I want to find "Kick", I type "Kick" and it immediatly shows the result. In Reaper, same action takes a long time. Am I doing it wrong? Thanks!

@tombraect65073 жыл бұрын
Thanks I've learn some neat tricks! For Tip 4, you can just select 2 tracks and drag them under another one to create a folder track, even simpler.
@JamesZhan3 жыл бұрын
Yup! However, it's not as fast as the shortcut because you would still have to create a new track to use it as the folder track. It also doesn't change the color either. With the shortcut, all you need to do is select the tracks you want to make a folder out of, hit the shortcut, and they will be nested under a new folder track and that folder track will bear the same color as the selected tracks! :)

Thanks for these. Super helpful. Did not know about the first tip solution. If the plugins are not in the same order you can also use project/fx bay where you can bypass all instances of a specific plugin in the whole project! Regarding tip 2: Is it possible to link all the controls? I've seen it done in Protools with groups but never in Reaper.
@JamesZhan3 жыл бұрын
Nice tip about the FX bay! I didn't even know that. So many goodies in REAPER haha. RE: tip 2 Yup! You just need to do the linking for each control. A bit time consuming, I know, but what I do is once I'm done with the linking, I save it as a track template. I did try saving the plugins as a plugin chain but unfortunately that won't retain the linking.

Hi James, I have a question about reaper, as I am very new to music making. When I create a new track in Reaper and use the same plug-in for multiple different tracks(with each track being a different preset in the same plug-in), the sound of each track is fine and sounds the way it does from the plug-in as when I used a midi controller to play/record it and all is well as I render it, etc. However, when I use a different plug-in and record a new track, the sound does not sound right in the current different plug-in. Furthermore, when I go back and unmute the previous recorded and different tracks(from the different plug-in) and play them, the sound is totally different (from when I recorded them and prior to opening the new plug-in) in those tracks and all screwed up and sounds like garbage. (Note that these are all tracks in the same project, as I do not create a new project under file) It seems that the only way around this is if render and save a song(s) in my folder (from one project and the same plug-in), then create a brand-new project under file then open a different plug in and create a new track or tracks from that plug-in then render and save them. Then, finally, at that point I can drag each of those rendered filed songs(each song from a different plug-in) back into reaper, under a new project, and play them and then there sound will be right and normal and not messed up and sound like how it did prior to rendering. There has got to be a way around this or I am overlooking something simple. Sorry if I confused you. I guess the bottom line is, whenever I am in a new project in reaper and using a plug-in for various tracks and then create a new track, in the same project, and then decide to use a different plug-in, it screws up everything. The sound of the new plug-in not only screws up the sound of the previous recorded tracks(created/recorded with the other plug-in) but the sound is not right in the presets with the newest plug-in either. But if I use the same plug-in in reaper for multiple tracks, all is perfect. The new plug-in on the same project seems to be the irritant. Feel free to explain what you think the problem could be. Probably something simple. Explain it to me please like I am a child since I am brand new to music. I basically just want each track to maintain and keep its sound without the sound getting messed or altered when a new or different plug-in is opened to record different tracks within the same project.

Super nice! I like all of the tips, but the 'play tool' is really cool! Oh and the bus (folder) action list. I have one question that you might have an answer too. Because Reaper is so brilliantly customizable, it is growing 'on' you during time (you change things to your likings) Now when I have to install Reaper again, it is back to square one. (initial settings) Is there a way to migrate all my custom settings (possibly also showing what stuff is missing that I installed, like SWS etc.)? Thanks a bunch. I subscribed to your channel to stay connected!

Hey! Glad you liked the video and thanks for the sub! If you go to Preferences > General, there is a place for you to export configuration. You just need to do that, and import the configuration to the newly installed REAPER, and all your customizations will be back!

Some corrections: TIP 1 - This would be much more useful if we can add a plugin to any specific plugin slot with dragging. Otherwise this is nearly not as convenient as in Pro Tools. TIP 2 - This doesn't work on different tracks, unfortunately. And that would be really useful. TIP 6 - When routing your reference tracks to hardware outputs directly you miss the opportunity to use any metering in plugin format. So, still the best way to organize project (with or without reference tracks) is using pre-master bus, that handles all master effects. TIP 8 - If you have muted sends on that track, they will be unmuted during your listening and this may be undesired.
