As a Navy vet I’m probably violating some unspoken rule, but these Unit guys really are the best. I’m not talking on a technical level. That’s for them and the rest of JSOC to argue about. But, they just seem so much more humble and affable. Every single one of these interviews with them they just come across as a bunch of really cool nerds who happened to have the most awesome job in the world.

I was a 25u Commo NCO and was fortunate enough to be attached with a support group with these guys. At first I thought I was going to be around a bunch of knuckle daggers. They were all huge with big beards, cool gear, and looked scary as hell. I quickly found out that everyone of them were absolutely geniuses compared to me. They all knew my job better than I did and I learned so much from these guys. He is definitely being humble about his Commo skills. They were truly at a different level than anyone I had ever been associated with.

That is interesting when I went to the Delta recruiting briefing, around 1999-2000, they said that if you make it through to being an operator you could stay in your MOS for 3 years and if you decided to stay Delta after that you would have to reclass to 11 series or 18 series for promotion. It is funny to hear that someone who actually did it during that timeframe stayed in his MOS.

I was a PFC and was sent to BNCOC because they needed to fill a slot and my Col wanted me in that class. I was a 71L working in a Commo Section. So I quickly would up being the adjunct Commo SGT when we were in the field because even though I was lowest ranking, I was the only one with a TS Security Clearance and could operate all the equipment. Whenever we did a field exercise, I was the only one who could stay in the Commo tent when we went secure on the net because of the encryption equipment.

I so miss my self built PC tower with a boss Never winter Nights account on it😊. I was in a weird job at Ft. Lewis and my section supported 2nd Batt. This is '91. There was some seeds of transformation regarding operator support. Fantastic organization 👍🏻. IFF, reconnaissance force,... Sketchy mix🤨. I see your Hobbit cave is as big as mine. I was fortunate to work with a Sgt. Bodnar who ensured we got our ropes right while diving off a cliff at Lake Belton. My first time was, 'save my life', the second was 'so I won't be afraid of it' 😊. For those in the know, SSG Crosset was my instructor at the C7 course😊 Thermite for the burning house? Great episode guys! Awesome prep too! Suggestion - You should try to get LtCol Randy Hoffman on. He has a phenomenally interesting story to tell from his early days with Force Reconnaissance company, to his officer time where he was pulled to do clandestine (? Singleton) work in the Afghanistan VERY EARLY in the war. His recent story is also interesting in the as a LtCol he was deep selected for a wartime Bn Command which insanely difficult in the Marine Corps, but he had to turn it down in order to publicly address his PTSD. Read the N Y Times article. Brave guy.

LOL. I came up as a 31C - 31W / 25W. Special Operations Communicators had a HELL of a time in Gordon BNCOC / ANCOC, because of having to build regular Army MSE (Multiple Subscriber Equipment) networks. I spent most of my time in the Army supporting Special Operations in SOCEUR SIG DET, JCSE, and 10th SFG (A). I had worked with SOCOM, while at JCSE, to field the SCAMPI terminals that ended up morphing into the SDN - L / M / H terminals. I also had attended the JBS (Joint Base Station) course and the Trojan- Lite course. Never had ANY work with MSE, but that's what Big Army taught at Gordon. I ended up teaching the PSC-5 course during ANCOC, and working with the school house to modify their POI. Good times. I retired in 2011, with 22 years of service, as a 25W4S5WF7.

One difference I noted between US ruck marches and British tabbing (back in the 1980s and 90s) was that US troops seemed to do less 'all-terrain' marching with heavy packs than we did in the British Army and seemed to limit ruck marches to the roads. Has this changed?
